Lumber Stands Ready...With the construction of a sawmill (story on this page),
Brown Company is branching out into a new field of woodutilization. Although we are entering this field in a small way,it may prove to be a big step toward a great future for BrownCompany and its many men and women. Our raw material,trees, provides us with a very unusual source of supply. It willenable us to expand or increase our operations or branch outinto new fields wherever and whenever it is deemed wise. Thatis why our industry differs from all others.
At no time has our country really faced a shortage of wood.While the capacity of other industries can be measured with areasonable degree of accuracy, no one really knows the full-operating capacity of the lumber industry. We know, however,that it is very large.
For example, back in 1906-1907 the industry produced 39billion board feet annually. Production dropped to 10 billionfeet in 1932 — during the depression years. In 1940, productionjumped to 29 billion feet, Responding to increased war andcivilian demands, the industry produced 33.6 billion feet in1941. Then in 1950, it produced 38 billion feet, which reflectedthe year's big demand for houses.
The secret of the industry's ability to respond to the pulseof requirements lies in its ability to step up production rapidlyand in its ability to shift quickly from one type of productionto another as may be demanded by the emergency. In all, thereare estimated to be from 50,000 to 60,000 sawmills in the UnitedStates. Most of them are small mills, even smaller than the onenow under construction here at Brown Company, but they arethe "safety valves" of the industry.
It is extra capacity and versatility that enables the lumberindustry to reduce what might be a program of austerity inany emergency to one of mere belt tightening. And it is theadded luxury made possible by wood that produces the differ-

weapon cannot be manufac-tured ; it must be given to ourwounded by able-bodied menand women of good will. Thatweapon is human blood.
Recruiters hear rumors thatthe Red Cross sells blood.Other people hear them. Theyspring up in one community,die down, and then come tolife a thousand miles away.Wherever they strike theylower blood collections.

Company sawmill is now un-derway near the Burgess car-penter shop off Sullivan Streetand is expected to be com-pleted and ready for operationby the end of June.
Owned By Brown CompanyThe sawmill is being con-
structed by Brown Companybut will be operated by theHeywood-Wakefield Companyof Gardner, Mass., probablythe largest furniture manu-facturer in New England. Theoperation will use power, lightand steam facilities, and rawmaterial in the form of logsand pulpwood bolts furnishedby Brown Company. The saw-mill will draw largely on thelocal supply of labor.
Although the original millis being constructed on a com-paratively small scale, theinstallation may be easily ex-panded at a later date thusproviding Brown Companywith an increase in productionat the sawmill and still betterutilization of raw material.
The complete installationwill include a specially de-signed building, log deck ma-chinery, a band mill, a steamand air operated carriage andother equipment.
Unique SystemThe system will be designed
so that a Heywood-Wakefieldspecialist will mark the four-foot bolts of wood, principallyyellow birch, in the pulpwoodstream ahead of our barkingplant. After barking, thesebolts will be pulled off the con-veyor and delivered to Hey-

Company To Expand Operated WoodProgram; Personnel Changes Made
C. S. Herr, Resident WoodsManager, has announced fourorganizational changes in theWoods department to meet thecompany's expanded operatedwood program. For the lastseveral years, according to areport, Brown Company'sWoods department has oper-ated approximately 90,000cords of wood annually of allspecies. This year it is plannedto produce 130,000 cords ofwood. The following changeswere made to effect this pro-gram :
William Pickford will as-sume the position of Truck-ing Superintendent and will bedirectly responsible for all de-partment operated vehicles.
Arthur Boivin will be trans-ferred to the Parmacheneearea where he will serve as
District Logging Superintend-ent for the operations in theValley.
Alton Oleson, who has beenhandling the above work inthe Parmachenee Valley, is tobe transferred to the BrownFarm where he will assumethe responsibility for opera-tions in that area, togetherwith the newly opened AbbottBrook section.
Ivan Elger of Scotstown,P. Q., who has worked for thedepartment before on Canadi-an pulpwood purchases, is be-ing employed, with head-quarters at Scotstown, wherehe will handle pulpwood pur-chasing in that area, and like-wise replace William Pickfordon the procurement of bondedlabor.

"Dam Fool Injuries"It's funny, but in my day
I've heard a lot of folks say,"How can we prevent dam foolinjuries like these?" And theywould be talking about whathappened to some poor guywho was laid up because hefell off a ladder, or got caughtin a machine, or cut himselfwith a hand knife.
I think you'll agree with me,that there's no such thing asa "dam fool injury!"
Sure, — nobody gets hurtjust for the fun of it, becausegetting hurt, hurts too much!
But it's a fact that some-times people do do things thatlook dumb. But I agree withRusty that people don't gethurt because they are dumb,but because nobody ever tookthe time to tell them theproper way of doing what theywere doing when they wereinjured.
Anyone who doesn't knowhow to do his job shouldn't bebashful at all about askingsomeone for more information.
The quickest way of findingout what you don't know isto ask somebody about it. Thebird who doesn't bother to findout is usually the one who getshurt!
It's smart to ask questions.But sometimes a guy won'tand that's where we come in.
If we see anyone taking achance — perhaps he doesn'tknow any better — weshouldn't just stand by andallow him to keep doing it. Ifwe go up to him and give hima friendly tip, in most caseshe'll take it in the right spiritand thank us for it.
That's how we can avoid"dam fool injuries."

ence between a smooth-running, efficient emergency programand one fraught with frustration and discomfort.
Take the matter of homes for war workers and their families,for one example. Lumber and plywood today are making pos-sible the continuation of a vast construction program which,so far as materials are concerned, is limited only by the avail-ability of steel, aluminum, copper and other metals. And evenso far as metals are concerned, lumber and plywood have re-duced the drain on structural elements. The building industry-,realized that, pound for pound, lumber can do as much work asother building materials; that, properly engineered, lumbercan be superior on a cost-for-cost comparison as well.
In addition to wood for construction, the civilian economyutilizes wood in hundreds of other ways. A check-list of theuses of wood in the average home, for example, reveals anastounding record of our dependability on wood and wood prod-ucts. These have always been available to the extent of theirnecessity, in war or peace.
Walk on the left side of theroad, facing the traffic on thatside. Then you see the cars,and the drivers see you. Itmakes sense.

Under this system, only thematerial adapted to furnitureuse will go into boards andthe remaining wood substancewill be utilized in our pulpmills.
At present, it is impossibleto determine what productionwill be at the sawmill. Con-servative estimates haveranged from 8,000,000 feet to12,000,000 feet per year.
Wanted:Deep Sea Diver
It seems that Jack Rodgerson'stall tales of how he had to dive forhis breakfast when he was a young-ster down in P. I. have influencedsome of our fishing employees.
Ike Walton is all confused. Ofcourse, we natives don't pay muchserious attention to his stories. Wejust enjoy reading them.
But a certain L. B., who comesfrom other parts, took Jack at hisword and roamed up to MunnPond on the opening day of fishingseason, threw his rod and equip-ment into the pond and dove inexpecting to come up with hisli'mit. It so happened that all hecame up with was a good cold. NowL. B. wants to hire a diver to findhis fishing equipment, for futureuse. He has decided that his wayof catching fish is better than theway they do it in P. I.

That letter circulatedthrough the serviceman'shome town and blood dona-tions took an alarming down-ward spiral.
No wounded man in Korea,Japan, or anywhere else whomay be hospitalized pays forthe blood he receives. In anycase the Red Cross couldn'tcharge for it. The blood isadministered only by militarymedical personnel. When scan-dalmongers pass out this stuffthey are hitting one targetonly — the Military Services.
Damaging rumors of bloodsales are not common to theKorean trouble alone. Theybecame so bad during WorldWar II that President Roose-velt labelled them subversiveand suggested that any per-son hearing such a tale com-municate with the FBI.
No One PaysTo date, not one American
serviceman in Korea has beenfound who had paid for a bloodtransfusion in a military hos-pital. The badly w.ounded whohave returned to this countryare lavish in their praise ofthe blood donors who havesaved their lives.
The death rate among thewounded in Korea is less thanhalf that of World War II.Blood has been a major factorin this record.
From August 1950 to theend of the year 1951, the RedCross and co-operating bloodbanks furnished 1,318,000pints to the military forces torebuild plasma reserves andan additional 180,300 pints ofwhole blood for Korea. So ur-gent is the need for bloodthat these extensive collect-ing facilities are now supple-mented by many ArmedForces Blood Donor Centersat m i l i t a r y installationsthroughout the country.
No yakking rumor-mongersshould be allowed to slow upthis vital program. Blood canmean the difference betweenlife and death for a service-

In the finals the match was a closeand hard fought battle for both teams.Cascade Machines managed to takethe first point from Bermico #3 byfive pins but Bermico =3 came backand took the second string by sevenpins, giving them a two point lead go-ing into the third string. Bermico tookthe third string on the strength ofDen Mullen's 106. Ralph Webb's 112,and Arnold Hanson's 106 and won theMill Championship for 1952. As anadded highlight in the last string, Con-rad Chevarie chalked up his secondstring of 125 in the playoffs.

With the fishing season un-derway we expected to getplenty of news for the Bulle-tin, but so far we have beenslightly disappointed. All theso-called fishermen wequestioned about their firstday's catch claimed they spentthe morning in bed and didn'tget around to fishing in theafternoon. This sounds like alot of "malarky" to me, butwho am I to argue with abunch of unsuccessful fisher-men?
We did see one fishermanwalking around Riverside thefirst day of fishing season.The proof of that fact wasn'tin the amount of fish hecaught, but in the amount offlies in his cap. At least wethink the feathers were sup-posed to be flies. What kindof fish do you catch with them,Hector?
One of our more famousanglers in the person of Al-bert Wheeler, was required towork the first day of the sea-son. Albert was so mad aboutit he forgot to shave andfrightened everybody in "chemill. You should keep thatbeard when you fish Albert.You'd have a good excuse fornot catching any fish.
