Welcome to Algiers

Algeria is very pleased to host the 2nd North African/Mediterranean Petroleum & Geosciences Conferenceand Exhibition, scheduled to take place in Algiers from April 10th to 13th 2005.

This important event, which follows the 40th anniversary of Sonatrach, will enable the Geoscientificcommunity to share their expertise and to discuss the latest developments and challenges facing theupstream activity.

“Pre-Cambrian to Pliocene, Challenge, Ideas & Opportunities”: the theme of the conference reflects ourmain concern following the intensive exploration and development efforts made during the last decade, inwhich the discovery of new world-class petroleum provinces has taken Algeria into the top ten countries.

We believe that the time is ripe to update our approaches and techniques in order to mobilize the hugehydrocarbon resources of the Mediterranean-rim region.

This is why Algeria 2005 is an ideal meeting place for experts and senior executives from national andinternational companies, as well as research centres and universities, to exchange their ideas and experience.

We welcome you to Algeria to take part in this important event and look forward to your activecontribution to the success of this conference.

Dr. Chakib KhelilMinister of Energy and Mines, Algeria

Workshops

Two one-day workshops will be held on Sunday 10 April before the conference at the conferencevenue. The workshops will review aspects ofAlgerian reservoirs and will be led by recognisedleaders in the topics. The workshops will take theformat of formal presentation, core examinationand open discussion where delegates will beencouraged to actively participate.

Algerian Saharan Platform ReservoirsSunday 10 April, 08.30-17.00 hrs

DescriptionAlgeria has excellent quality sandstone oil and gasreservoirs at multiple levels throughout thePalaeozoic and in the Triassic interval, which rests onthe regional Hercynian unconformity. The reservoirsvary in depositional setting from marine turbiditethrough shoreface to fluvial and aeolian. Thedepositional setting, facies and reservoir quality ofeach of the principal reservoir intervals of theAlgeria Sahara Platform will be discussed in turnand viewed in core made available by Sonatrach.

Tight and Fractured Sandstone ReservoirsSunday 10 April, 08.30-17.00 hrs

DescriptionFractured low porosity sandstones form a significantreservoir component in five giant accumulations inAlgeria: Hassi Messaoud, Rhourde el Baguel, TinFouye, Ohanet and In Amenas. Modern drilling andcompletion technologies have made these types ofreservoirs viable economic targets and in Algeria asignificant proportion of the country’s futurepotential, particularly for gas, is likely to be foundin tight fractured sandstones. The workshop willprovide an insight to the nature and performance oftight fractured reservoirs using Algerian and worldwide examples and illustrated by core madeavailable by Sonatrach.

More details about the workshops will be availablesoon on the EAGE website (www.eage.org).

Field Trip

From Wednesday 13 until Monday 18 April

Departure from Algiers on 13 April 2005 in themorningReturn to Algiers on 18 April 2005 in the evening

Field trip leaders:F. Braik, SonatrachR. Eschard, IFPH. Abdallah, SonatrachG. Desaubliaux, IFP

The Paleozoic succession is beautifully exposed inthe Ajjer Tassilis of the south-eastern Sahara inAlgeria. We will visit these world-class outcropsduring the 5-day field trip, describing the entireLower Paleozoic succession, from the Precambrianbasement to the Middle Devonian formations. Thestratification is gently dipping northwards in a largemonocline corresponding to the southern limit ofthe Illizi basin (fig.1). We will observe the differentformations in the stratigraphic order drivingnorthwards along the main Tassili roads. Most of theseries which make the prolific reservoirs of the Illiziand Berkine basins are outcropping there, and willbe described from a sedimentological and reservoirpoint of view.

After a 2 1/2-hour flight over the largest desert ofthe world with a plane specially chartered for thefield trip, we will arrive in the oasis of Djanet.Djanet is a typical little town of the southern Sahara

where we will spend the first night. The hotel isbuilt on the granitic pre-cambrian basement. In thehotel area, we will observe the infra-cambrianunconformity, a major unconformity which can betraced all over the Gondwana craton (fig.2). Theunconformity is onlapped by Cambro-ordovicianLower Paleozoic fluvial sediments, which are timeand facies equivalent of the Unit II reservoir of thegiant Hassi-Messaoud field. We will observe thesedimentary facies, the reservoir heterogeneitydistribution and the fracturation pattern of theseUnit II fluvial sandstones. The next two days will be devoted to theobservation of the Ordovician sediments. Thetransgressive evolution of the Ordovician successionis clearly exposed along road-side outcrops. We willmake a special stop on the famous “Quarzite deHamra” in a spectacular side canyon along the mainroad (Fig. 3). The “Quartzite de Hamra” makes atight silicified reservoir unit which produceshydrocarbons in subsurface when fractured. Severalstops will then be devoted to the observation ofLate Ordovician glacial incised valleys. One of thehighlights of the trip is the observation of theinternal architecture of these glacial valleys in acanyon cross-cutting a glacial valley network. Thesite itself is spectacular, i.e. a wadi forming apermanent oasis in the canyon (Fig. 4). The valley-fillshows several phases of incisions and fills. Each ofthe filling phases have a complex architecture, withfluvio-glacial sediments, microconglomeratic shalesand Gilbert deltas. Evidences of peri-glacial

influences are obvious in these outcrops. Theseoutcrops constitute an analogue of the complexreservoirs of the Unit IV which producehydrocarbons in the Illizi and Ahnet basins, in theTin-Fouye and Tigentourine fields for example. We will then drive northwards, observing theSilurian flooding and shales in the Intra-Tassiliandepression. The basal part of these hot shalesconstitutes the main source rock of Algeria. Above,Upper Silurian prograding shoreface sequences formthe rim of the Fadnoun plateau, one of the mostdesolated places of the world. The Caledonianunconformity, at the boundary between Silurian andDevonian, is exposed in a perched oasis along theTassili Rim. Fluvial and estuarine deposits arebeautifully exposed in this area.Driving across the Fadnoun plateau, we will crossthe Fadnoun fault zone. Many oil field traps in thesubsurface of the Illizi basin are linked to this fault. The deformation associated to the multi-phasedstrike-slip play of the fault can be observed in thisarea. The Fadnoun area is also a place to observe thereservoir architecture of the F6 unit in subsurface. These fluvial sandstones form a massive unitoverlying floodplain sediments in which root tracesof archaic vegetation are present. The field trip will end in the Emsian offshoresediments above the F6 unit. Thinner discontinuousreservoir units, associated to the rise and erosion oflocal hights, form significant reservoir units in thesubsurface of the Illizi and Berkine basins.

During the field trip, the outcrop succession will becompared to the subsurface of the Illizi basin. Logsand seismic data will be commented in front of theoutcrop analogs.Beautiful scenery, desert ambience and a visit toarcheological sites (paintings and carvings) are alsoincluded in the programme.

The number of participants is limited to 25.

The participation fee includes the round trip Algiers– Djanet, Illizi – Algier by Air Algeria especiallychartered for the field trip, airport transportation,4X4 vehicles (3 per vehicle + driver), fullaccommodation (hotel, camp equipment, food...)and a field trip guide. We will be camping in thedesert most of the time.

Distinguished Instructors Short Course (DISC)

Insights and Methods for 4D ReservoirMonitoring and Characterization

Sunday 10 April, 08.30 – 17.00 hrsInstructor: Dr. Rodney Calvert, Shell

The DISC Course is presented by the EAGEin cooperation with SEG.

Overview4D can give major returns if applied properly. However, it is still a rapidly evolving technology.Participants in this one-day course come away witha basic understanding of the issues leading tosuccess and failure and the methods to ensuresuccess.

SummaryThe course will address the following questions: ■ What methods of seismic 4D monitoring are

appropriate for different types of fields andproduction mechanisms are appropriate for? What questions can 4D answer? Are there anyalternatives?

■ What are the seismic quality requirements andhow can we assure they are sufficient? What 3Dproblems can we difference away to get good 4D?

■ There are now more and more options availablefor seismic acquisition with streamers, OBC, OBSand down-hole possibilities. How do we makethe best choice for quality and price? Some realbreakthroughs are now possible.

■ What should we measure from our data? Whatare the important reservoir engineering questions? What do people mean by “quantitative 4D” andwhat is possible with petrophysical and reservoirengineering co-operation?

■ How can we update a reservoir model using 4Ddata and 4D history matching?

■ How should we make 4D monitoring an integralpart of field development and management? How might this change our industry?

Participants will be able to take home and use theanswers and methods discussed in this course.

Who should attend?Anyone interested in understanding the methods of4D and their potential. This course is suitable formanagers who must make the important decisions, for reservoir engineers who want to understand theresults, for seismologists who have to get theresults, and for anyone else who would like to learnhow to remotely track subsurface processes in 3D asthey happen. Advanced knowledge of seismictheory is not required; this course is aboutunderstanding and practice.

BiographyDr. Calvert started hisfirst time-lapse workmeasuring continentaldrift in Iceland as partof a Ph.D. from 1966-69. He joined Shell inThe Hague as a seismicprocessor, then becamea processing managerfor Shell Malaysia. Hewas heavily involvedwith Shell’s early 3Defforts in the North Sea.

He held several research and management positionsin geophysics and integrated reservoircharacterization before returning to 4D.A highlight of his career has been working inCanada where he developed an addiction tobackcountry skiing. He is now stationed in Houstonwhere the closest he gets to skiing is frighteninghimself and the local community on his rollerblades.
