Tech Times Issue 00 Month Year
Second Chance Animal Shelter, 111 Young Road, PO Box 136, East Brookfield, MA 01515
Volume 12 Issue 6 www.secondchanceanimals.org Winter 2013
President’s Letter It’s hard to believe that 2015 is here. It’s been 16 years since the start of Second
Chance and it is amazing to think that we are now helping over 16,000 pets a
year! It’s exciting to us that we are able to help so many. We are able to do this
because we get to the root causes of animal suffering and abandonment. The
pets that come into shelters is just a very small percentage of the pets in need.
There are so many more living in our communities that need resources so that
they can be healthy, safe, and living a wonderful life. And that is exactly what
we work to do. We work hard on surrender prevention by helping to keep pets
in their homes whenever possible. How do we do this? By providing programs such as: Training programs for pet
owners to help them work with their pets to resolve issues: educational outreach programs for school age children to
learn about caring for pets and being safe around pets; subsidized veterinary care to help pet owners on limited in-
comes care for their pets; community programs such as vaccine clinics in the community and weekly at our wellness
center to prevent the spread of disease in the community; a pet food pantry to provide food to pets whose owners
have fallen on hard times; and so much more.
It is all about the pets at Second Chance. It is about finding every way we can to get help to every pet we can. The
pets that come into our adoption center get the best care possible and we do our best to find them homes as quickly as
possible. The thousands of pets that come into our Wellness Center for veterinary care receive top notch care from
one of our 6 veterinarians. This is what we do every day to help pets. It’s a great feeling to know that we are provid-
ing programs that help pets in, and out, of shelters to get a Second Chance at a wonderful life.
My heartfelt thanks to all of you that help to make all of this possible. Every
year brings new challenges and new needs. Every year brings new stories of
pets in need and finding a way to save them. We could not do all we do with-
out all of you – thank you for being there for us so we can be there for them!

Thank You for remembering the animals with your special donations. The Scoop on Poop
Intestinal Parasites and Your Pet
Dogs and cats can get worms, but how important is that, really? Can’t
you just see them in the pet’s poop? Don’t wormy pets look thin and ill?
Wouldn’t they have diarrhea? Won’t it be obvious if your pet has worms?
The truth is that any pet can have internal parasites, even indoor pets,
and these parasites can impact their health without you ever seeing anything in
their stool or seeing any other obvious signs.
Let’s talk about a few of the most common intestinal parasites.
Both dogs and cats get roundworms; most dogs will have roundworms at some point in their lives. Roundworms are
long and thin; they live inside your dog’s intestines. Their eggs are passed in the stool, or can be passed from mother
to pup while they are still in her uterus or when they nurse, since immature worms can be passed in the mother’s milk.
Roundworms can also be transmitted when a dog eats a prey animal or ingests feces that have the worms’ eggs in
them.
Hookworms are also a common intestinal parasite that can affect dogs and cats. They attach to the wall of the
intestine and feed by sucking blood from your pet. Some young or debilitated animals can have infestations so severe
that they need to have blood transfusions. Immature hookworms hatch from eggs in the soil and are picked up by your
pet when they groom themselves or when the larvae penetrate your pet’s skin and migrate to their intestine.
Both dogs and cats can get tapeworms. They can be spread when your pet eats a flea (fleas carry one stage of the tape-
worm lifecycle) when they are scratching or grooming, or if they hunt and eat rodents. Pets with tapeworm may have
small segments of tapeworms stuck to the skin and hair around their anal area.
Another common intestinal parasite of dogs is the whipworm. They’re picked up when your dog plays in the
dirt and cleans themselves, or plays with a toy that has contaminated dirt on it.
So, if your pet seems fine, and you don’t see obvious evidence of worms,
why worry? There are several reasons: they can weaken your pet in ways you might
not see, putting them at risk for other Illnesses, and they can make you and members
of your family ill. People can get roundworms, hookworms, and some tapeworms
from dogs and cats. In humans, the roundworm can migrate to various areas in the
body and cause blindness, damage to the heart and lungs, and neurologic disease.
Hookworms can migrate through human skin and intestines and cause symptoms
that vary from a rash to severe disease. There are tapeworms that cause disease in
humans as well.
How can you protect your pet? Pick up
after your pet. Contaminated feces are one of the
most important sources of infestations. Wash your
hands after handling pets or pet waste. Have your veterinarian deworm puppies and
kittens, and bring a stool sample with you to your pet’s annual exam. Your vet will
dissolve the sample with a special chemical solution, then check for parasite eggs
under the microscope.
For more information, talk to your veterinarian or go to the companion animal para-
site council website at www.capc.org.

Dinner Auction 2015
Join in the Fun!!!
On March 21, 2015, we will be having our 16th annual Dinner Auction at the Leicester
Country Club. We moved to this new venue last year as this event has grown dramatical-
ly! There is a silent auction as well as a live auction with Auctioneer Joe Craig as the
guest auctioneer. The evening will begin at 5:00 PM with a delicious dinner, followed by
the auction.
There are 4 ways to get involved in this exciting event to help homeless pets. Attend, Donate, Advertise, or
Sponsor!
If you would like to attend the event, please use the tear sheet in this newsletter to order tickets. This is a fun
filled night of food, friendship, and bidding on some wonderful items.
Want to help make the evening a success with a donation to the event or help sponsor the event?
In order to make this event a success, we rely on contributions of gift certificates, goods and services from people
and organizations such as you. These donations are auctioned off at the evening’s festivities to raise much needed
funds for our shelter. In addition, we offer four other great opportunities to help Second Chance. 1) “Sponsor a
Centerpiece”. For $50. (per table), your company/organization can benefit from having your information placed
with a beautiful centerpiece; 2) Advertise in the evening program; 3) Be an event major supporter with a promi-
nent name placement at the event; and/or 4) Attend the event. Please see the attached form for further details on
these great programs that will help our pets and your business.
This not only offers you excellent exposure to the attendees but all proceeds go directly to benefit the shelter.
Whichever way(s) you choose, you will be helping the homeless pets in our area as well as help us to continue to
fund the much needed programs that we operate. Even if you are not a business or cannot attend our fundraiser,
you can help with a monetary donation as well. All are greatly appreciated!
We are a non-profit no-kill animal shelter that works hard to rescue animals. We began in 1999, opened our shel-
ter facility in East Brookfield in 2002, our Wellness and Education Center in 2010 - and we need your support to
help us meet the demands of all the homeless animals that pass through our doors and/or use our many programs.
All of our programs and services help over 16,000 animals per year! Please visit our website
www.secondchanceanimals.org, so you can see how our organization, with your support, is saving the lives of so
many pets.
Please call (508) 867-5525 if we can be of any assistance or you would like additional information about our or-
ganization. Thank you for your continued support. We are looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Second Chance is on the Roll!!!
What a great year 2014 turned out to be. We were able to place more animals in their forever homes than ever in our 16 years of existence. A new additional adoption center now operating in Framingham MA inside the Petsmart building gives our adult cats even more opportunities to be adopted by loving families. Our high quality, high volume spay and neuter clinic operates daily to stem the tide of the 3 million that are being euthanized each year due to lack of space and lack of adopters. Our Subsidized Veterinary Clinic, begun in Aug of 2013, has grown beyond our expec-tations and now offers appointments 5 days a week as well as two Saturdays a month and one evenings per week. We have helped so many of the underserved be able to provide med-ical care for their beloved pets. New vaccine clinic locations have been added to Webster and
Douglas as well as our mobile clinics that travel to cities throughout the state. But it isn’t stopping there! Through the generosity of the Petsmart Charities, Second Chance was awarded a grant that has enabled us to purchase a mobile surgical and adoption vehicle that will enable us to bring medical care to those who need us the most. This vehicle, which is 26 feet long and houses a com-plete surgical suite, pre-op and post-op space and can also serve as a mobile adop-
tion center, will be on the road and functioning by spring of this year. It gives us the capabil-ity to do vaccine clinics, surgery, dentals, wellness exams and will allow us to do adoption events at multiple locations. We are so excited to be able to bring services directly to those who can’t get to our North Brookfield facility. The current plan is to have the vehicle on the road 6 days a week, spending time at many of the other MA rescues that rely on our pro-grams, traveling into the neediest of neighborhoods in the cities of Worcester and Spring-field to bring all of our medical services to help keep our animal friends healthy and free from needless suffering. We continue to relentlessly pursue our mission to end animal suf-fering and abuse. We work hard to keep pets out of shelters in the first place by providing services in the community to help these pets and their owners. Keep an eye out for our new unit as you are out and about. Give our team a toot of the horn and a wave and let them know how much you support their work. They are tireless in their efforts and all of you are so vital to our mission with your support!!!
Help Pets When You Get Your Taxes Done!
Don't just get your taxes done, help out at the same time. We get $20 for every
new client we send to H&R Block this tax season. Just go on our website
www.secondchanceanimals.org and download the coupon flyer. You have to do your taxes anyway, so
now at least you can feel good that you’re helping pets while doing it. Just give the tax prepare our ID
number for this program (40005326465617) and thank you for helping pets!
