O’Meara Pleasedwith His Returnat THE PLAYERS

Fifty-four-year-old Mark O’Mearamay not have had very highexpectations when he cameinto this year’s PLAYERS

Championship. He last appeared inthe tournament in 2003 and returnedto TPC Sawgrass this week by virtueof his win at the Champions Tour’sConstellation Energy Senior PlayersChampionship.

After rounds of 66-74 to open thetournament at 4-under, O’Meara, sixstrokes off the lead, is right in themiddle of the chase.

“I made a couple of mistakes outthere today, but I played some prettygood shots,” he said of his secondround. “I’m proud of myself, and4-under for two rounds, that’s agood score on this golf course.”

Whether playing on the ChampionsTour, where he is a two-time winner, orreturning to the PGA TOUR, O’Meara, who is playing in his 661st PGA TOURevent, has looked comfortable back ona TOUR where he last made a cut in2009—at the British Open.

“There’s always pressure onme whether I’m playing here or ina Champions Tour event,” O’Mearasaid. “It does feel really good. Thisis a world-class field on a world-classgolf course.”

n 18 career PLAYERSChampionship starts priorto this year, David Toms hasexactly one top-10 finish—a

tie for ninth in 2009. And of those18 starts, he’s only made eight cuts.So it comes as something of asurprise that Toms finds himselfin the lead at the halfway pointof THE PLAYERS Championship.

Toms opened the tournamentwith a first-round, 6-under 66,only his fifth sub-70 round atTHE PLAYERS Stadium Course. He came back Friday with a 68.

“It seemed like early in my careeraround here, I was always trying toplay the perfect shot,” said Toms.“I think the last few years I’ve justlearned to try to play my game. I feltgood about everything I was doing,

driving the ball, iron shots, putter. And I didn’t want to give anythingback early.”

His plan worked as he parred fiveof his first seven holes, with birdiescoming on No. 5 and No. 7. His onlybogeys came on No. 8 and No. 15, andhe added four more birdies, with threeof them coming on the back nine.

“I haven’t done anything great, haven’t made a lot of long puttsor chipped in or anything like that.I’ve just played very, very solid.”

One stroke behind Toms is NickWatney, who made it to 9-underthrough No. 11 Friday and thenparred his final seven holes. A quartetof players, Luke Donald, Lucas Glover,Graeme McDowell and Steve Stricker, are tied for third at 8-under, with Gloverseeking his second consecutive win

after capturing the Wells FargoChampionship last week in Charlotte.

“I haven’t put myself in positiongoing into Saturday this year,”McDowell said. “So I said to mycaddie walking to the first tee[Thursday], ‘I’m missing beingin contention. Let’s go and putourselves in contention thisweekend.’”

He did.

For the second consecutive day, there was an eagle on the par-412th hole. Actually, there were two.In Friday’s second round, KeeganBradley holed out from the fairwayfrom 73 yards. Later in the day,Chad Campbell made a 2 whenhe knocked in his approach from 91yards, ironically the same distancefrom where Brian Gay made eaglethe previous day. In PLAYERS history, there were only 20 eagles on thathole before the three there this week.

A year ago, Paul Goydos opened THEPLAYERS by shooting 69-68. After 36 holesthis year, Goydos, who memorably lost ina playoff to Sergio Garcia in 2008, is at5-under 139 after opening with rounds of70-69. Goydos is hoping to improve on lastyear’s performance. Entering the final roundtied for 15th in 2010, Goydos skied to aSunday 81 to tie for 52nd.

Steve Stricker’s opening 69-67marks the first time in 44 careerrounds that he has shot consecutivesub-70 rounds at THE PLAYERS.Before this year’s PLAYERS, Strickerhad shot in the 60s in just two ofhis previews 42 attempts.

Through 36 holes, five players playedthe finishing stretch of Nos. 16,17 and 18 in nine strokes. AlvaroQuiros (below) and Bill Lunde(both in the first round) and RobertGarrigus and Derek Lamely(second round) finished with threeconsecutive birdies. Phil Mickelsonon Friday also took nine strokes onthe trio of holes—making eagle atNo. 16, followed by a par at No. 17and a birdie on the closing hole.

Tim Clark, who has suffered withan elbow injury for much of thisseason, gamely tried to defend his2010 PLAYERS Championship title. But the pain became too intense, and the South African withdrew fromthe tournament during the middle ofhis second round.

Three Champions Tour players (from left), Mark O’Meara, Corey Pavin andKenny Perry, all made the cut. O’Meara (4-under) is tied for 23rd, while Pavin(3-under) is tied for 28th and Perry (1-under) is tied for 47th.

The volunteer leadership for THE PLAYERS can be identified by their trademarkblue blazers, earning them the moniker “Blue Coats.” In 2011, five Vice Chairs, along with Tournament Chairman Jim Fuller, lead the 2,000-plus volunteerforce of the event. They are: First Vice Chairman Curtis Hazel and Vice ChairsRobert Davis, Andy Baggs, Brian Franco and Michele McManamon.

Blue Coat Memories:Curtis Hazel

In 2005, I was working in generalparking. I remember very distinctlystanding in a 10-foot-by-10-foottent with Tom Cooper and Tommy

Douglas, the 2009 PLAYERStournament chair, who was servingas vice chair of facilities that year. Itwas approximately 5 a.m., and therewas a thunderstorm engulfing our tentwith strong winds and lightningcrashing all around us. We werepreparing for what was going tobe a long and challenging day, andTommy, our fearless leader, gatheredus in close and said with as muchconviction as he could muster, “Boys,

this is what it is all about. Let’s goout there and have a great day!” Itwas so comical yet exactly what weneeded at that moment, and withthat we fought the elements to getour volunteers parked and to theirassignments on time.

With more than 2,000 volunteersreturning each year, I’m sure therehave been countless moments likethis that our volunteers can share. It is a testament to the personalcommitment each volunteer makesto help run this world-class eventand the reason we are consideredthe best volunteer force on TOUR.

Walt CourtneyVolunteer SpotlightThis year, THE PLAYERSChampionship volunteer WaltCourtney is celebrating 45 yearsvolunteering at PGA TOUR eventsalong the First Coast. He’s nevermissed working at THE PLAYERS, andhe also spent many years working atthe Greater Jacksonville Open whenthat was a TOUR event in the area.

It was shortly after he moved fromPhiladelphia that a close friend, whoworked on the caddie committee, encouraged Courtney to volunteer. He’s been hooked ever since. For 34of Courtney’s 45 years volunteering,he has had responsibility of keepingtrack of golf carts—a position thatcan sometimes be challenging.Occasionally after a round, playerswill “borrow” the carts to go fishingon the course. Naturally, Courtneyhas to track down the carts.

There is also the occasional

interaction with the players. Oneyear, Courtney was putting on thepractice green located behind thevolunteer headquarters when CurtisStrange approached him and admiredCourtney’s putter. Strange liked theclub so much, he offered to buy it.

“You do not have enough moneyto afford it,” Courtney said. Strangeassured him that he indeed couldafford it, to which Courtney repliedthat the putter had once belongedto his father and was therefore“priceless.”

“Enough said,” Strange replied. This week, Courtney is back at

TPC Sawgrass, once again offeringhis services.

“Volunteering is something thatI do to support my city and all of thecharities in our community. I knowevery day, every year I am out here,I am making a difference.”

f Graeme McDowell wasn’talready at the top of the list offavorite golfers for 12-year-oldMichael DeVries, he is now.The reigning U.S. Open champion

surprised DeVries by inviting himto hit balls with him on the drivingrange—part of a week-longVIP experience at THE PLAYERSChampionship made possibleby the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

When he was five, doctorsdiagnosed DeVries with the rare liverdisease primary sclerosing cholangitis, which usually results in the need fora transplant later in life. In DeVries’case, however, the need came sooner. In 2008, the disease progressedquickly, and his mother was atransplant match, donating a portionof her liver to her son. The operationwas successful, and aside from minorcomplications, both Mom and son are

doing fine. His wish to attend THEPLAYERS Championship was granted, but there was another well-keptsecret in the Make-A-Wishexperience that was yet to come.

After attending McDowell’s pre-tournament press conference in themedia center, McDowell made his wayto DeVries and let the cat out of the bag.

“How would you like to go to therange with me and hit some balls?”asked McDowell. DeVries’ ear-to-earsmile obviously meant yes.

Within minutes, McDowell hadDeVries shaping shots, hitting lowand high balls with more finding thetarget than not.

“This is at the top for me,” saidDeVries, who admits that the Make-A-Wish experience surpasses hispreviously best day—a tour of theChicago White Sox clubhouse andmeeting major leaguer Paul Konerko.
