I want to provide a brief update on the status of the Facility Plan that has been germinating for over two years in response to Second Church’s Plan for Action 2005. The Session has appointed a Presentation Team to promote the plan with the congregation for a vote in early autumn. The Presentation Team is being chaired by Eric Reid and consists of elders – Gale Reece, Stephanie Gilbert, Sonny Waller, and Anne Bolton; trustee – Harvie Wilkinson; Facility Plan team member – Gail Hoyt; and church members – Lyle Aten, Matt and Julia Shane, Melanie Gabbard, Ruth Berry, Lindsay Harrell, Terry Cook, and David Leachman.

The team has divided into three subgroups: Sanctuary Redesign, Christian Education Wing Rehabilitation, and Mission Component. The subgroups are not altering the specific details of the plan. They are defining the key components of the plan to help the congregation understand the value of each important part of the facility plan for our church’s future.

Staff members Gary Anderson, Missy Wallace, Barrett Milner, Mollie Sawyer and I serve as resource persons to this team as they focus their work. Moments for Mission on the plan will be presented to the congregation in worship in August and September with the goal of a vote taken in early October. The outcome of this vote will determine whether we will proceed with the plan and launch into a capital campaign.

In the meantime, work has begun on the new organ console to replace the existing obsolete console that has become almost impossible to repair. We will be without an organ console for about 10 days sometime between mid October to early November. This transition will not impact any scheduled weddings. Blessings, Dan

Cloudy skies and sprinkles of rain greeted the 16 golfers arriving at High Point golf club for Second P r e s b y t e r i a n ’ s s p r i n g g o l f scramble, and unfortunately the w e a t h e r

deteriorated from there. The sprinkles changed to a steady rain during the last half of the Holey Cup contest, and all participants were soaked, but persevered to the conclusion. Many thanks are due to everyone who played on under the trying conditions. Dale Meenach deserves a special mention as the wettest player! At the conclusion of the contest, Highpoint provided a meal of hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, slaw and chips, and Susan Tebbs provided cookies for dessert. First place winners were Ray Davis, John Witt, Jordan Yeiser, and Junie Roberts . They were awarded certificates for two complete dinners at Sawyer’s restaurant. Second place winners were Debbie Parrish, Mike Harrell, John Wilson, and Tom Lingeman. Closest to the hole prizes, a free round of golf at High Point, were won by Ray Davis, John Witt, Eddie Mesta and John Tebbs.

HOW HAS SECOND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH MADE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR LIFE?

(A cross section of our members has been asked to reply to this question. Throughout the summer and fall, culminating with our late fall stewardship campaign, personal responses to this question will appear in Second Sharing.)

What does Second mean to me? It is my spiritual house. It is more than a building; it is a community of fellow believers that help me actively participate in worship, grow in my faith, support me through difficult times, and serve the Lord. Beyond the fellowship, Second has provided me and my family opportunities to grow in faith through study, mission, and service. I am always comforted by the support and love from Second’s leadership and congregation. I am truly blessed by Second Presbyterian Church. Greg Leopo ld

SECOND SENIORS TRIP 2011

And God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind....And God saw that it was good”.

Genesis 1:24-25 What adds more warmth and love to a home than a family pet? Pets provide many positive experiences for children, including developing self-esteem, compassion, and empathy.

Children may find a true friend in a pet while learning lessons in responsibility and respect. The Humane Society urges parents to set up ground rules regarding care of animals. They encourage parents to, "tell your children not to pull the animal's tail, ears, or other body parts, and insist they never tease, hit, or chase the pet. Teach children how to properly pick up, hold, and pet the animal." Parents should supervise interactions, and help children understand, like humans, animals sometimes don't want to be bothered. This is all particularly important if the animal is not known to you! Children should know the warning signs of an animal who is annoyed...flat ears, growling, or hissing.

The CDC warns that children should never kiss their pets, and that hand-washing is vital because children are prone to putting hands in their mouths. They stress this is especially important after visiting petting zoos. During the warm months remember your pets need access to water, shelter, and shade. Walking and exercising in the cool of the day is helpful, as well as extra grooming to decrease excess hair. The danger issue of hot cars applies to pets as well as children! THE EMERGING CHURCHTHE EMERGING CHURCHTHE EMERGING CHURCHTHE EMERGING CHURCH

Join us June 12 - July 31 at 9:40 a.m.* in the Campbell Memorial Room

In 2009, a large group of followers of Jesus, people from a wide range of denominational traditions, met to share experiences and to learn from each other. The inspirational theme revolved around the strong feeling that something new was emerging in the Church. Even though no one knew exactly what this emergence is or where it is taking us, the wind of the Spirit is moving through many communities. What is emerging? What does it mean? Six teachers share their experiences and insights to enrich the dialogue. Through these challenging presentations, your perspective may become deeper and your faith stronger! *No class on July 3
