A couple of weeks ago when we commissioned in worship the mission team going to Honduras on the Medical and Dental Mission Trip, I mentioned the importance of flexibility when working in a Third World country. My 20 years of experience in mission work in Honduras has taught me that the need to change and adapt is essential as one never knows what might develop or what plans might be diverted. My 38 years of experience in pastoral work has taught me the same lesson.

Two undeniable facts of life are: 1) change is an inevitable occurrence and 2) growth is an uncomfortable decision. Put another way: change is a given and growth is a choice. Change is both exciting and terrifying; it is both inevitable and necessary. The necessity of change is expressed well by Gerald Heard in his book The Source of Civilization: A creature which has become perfectly adapted to its environment [that is: things as they are], an animal whose whole capacity and vital force is concentrated and expended in succeeding here and now, has nothing left over with which to respond to any radical change� It is this success efficiency which seems to account for the extinction of an enormous number of species. Climatic conditions altered. They had used up all their resources of vital energy in adapting to things as they were�

Whether in mission work abroad or in church work at home, that perspective is important to reflect upon continually because change is a given and growth is a choice.

2016 VBS

Our 2016 Cave Quest Vacation Bible School was a huge success! Over 40 children participated in a fun filled week of wacky science experiments, deep Bible quests, themed games, snacks and music. For our VBS mission project, the children donated over 200 individually wrapped snack items for Habitat for Humanity! On behalf of children's ministry, we would like to extend our heart filled gratitude and appreciation for the following volunteers who helped make Cave Quest VBS our best yet:

2016 BAPTISM DATES

Second Church celebrates that on June 4 Boniface Juma, supported by our Mission giving, has graduated after 2 years of study with a Master of Arts in Christian Leadership from the African Bible College, Lilongwe Campus, Malawi. Boniface’s relationship with Second began with his sharing in the life of the congregation in March, 2014. Going forward, he plans to employ his education by conducting sessions on Leadership with a focus on the role of church leaders in development of youth ministry. Below is a recent e-mail received from him:

I would like to extend my thanks to the second Presbyterian Church members for the good work which they have done to me (Boniface Juma). I salute you from deep down of my heart and God should bless you for that.

I would like to inform you that the school has almost come to an end. And I am having graduation on 4th June 2016 at African Bible College, Lilongwe Campus, Malawi, after spending 2 years. I do not take this for granted; this is because some of my fellow students will not graduate because they have balances to pay, for them to graduate. But you paid everything for me that is why I am short of words to express myself to you. People have told me that am blessed person which is true.

As of now I will continue working with William Murray Secondary school until I find another Job related to my qualification. This is my last year to work with them because my contract will end up in November 2016. I was on three year contract.

But I have also a vision to start conducting teachings on Leadership and I will focus on the role of church leaders in development of youth ministry. I will be meeting with the Leaders and the youths on congregational level, Presbyterian level and the whole synod of Nkhoma then entire nation. This will help me to put in practice what you have taught me through African Bible College (ABC). I have already talked to the youth director of Nkhoma Synod but I also shared the idea with congregational Minister and General Secretary during my research. I have a passion towards the youth of today and I want to

play a role in transforming these young people to love the Lord and save Him with fear and trembling in places where they work. They should be responsible young leaders who can make a different in the world. I will explain more on this vision so that you can have a clear picture.

I will be telling you now and again for you to know what is going on in my life after spending two years doing Master of Arts in Christian Leadership.

Cost: $15 - deadline to sign-up by July 5th

• Kings Island Trip is August 4th. Open to ALL YOUTH rising 6th grade and up. (2016 graduates are welcome to come). Cost is $40 plus approx. $15 for lunch in the park. We will be leaving the church parking lot at 8:30am and returning by 7:00pm. Registration deadline is July 28th, but sign up soon to make sure you get a spot! Registration forms can be found on the youth page of our church website.

Every Sunday we will meet at Magee’s at 9:40 for breakfast and discussion of the sermon.

Middle School Mission Week: July 25-29

Completed 6th-8th Grade

This year we will be focusing on local mission projects in Lexington instead of going to BAM. This decision was made for the following reasons: • To allow for our youth to become aware of needs that

exist right here in our own city. • Help youth make connections with people they will

probably see again. • No cost to youth or families (BAM cost over $200 per

student.) • Flexibility. Because this is not an overnight trip, students

can come for a few days of the week if they have other conflicts rather than missing out on the whole experience. (If students are available to come to all five days, it is STRONGLY encouraged that they do so.)

On June 6th, 260 Justice Ministry Network members representing 27 BUILD congregations, 22 from Second Church, celebrated at Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary BUILD's story of living out God's call to do justice. Second was recognized for exceeding our investment goal last year. With a few pledges still pending, we are confident that we will meet our goal of $9,000 this year. Abundant gratitude to our Second Church family and friends that have recently invested in the sacred work of doing justice.

• BUILD's issue victories this year: Shannon Sell, Bluegrass Lex. Hub Administrator, reported to BUILD's mental health steering committee that all plans to grow the capacity of the Bluegrass ACT team (Assertive Community Treatment Teams) to serve 100 clients by March 2017 in need of mental health/substance abuse care has been fully initiated. She is actively working with Social Service Commissioner Chris Ford, Councilwoman Susan Lamb and other health professionals to conduct a community needs assessment for the ACT team. It will be exciting to hear Ms. Sell share the progress on this issue at the Community Problems Assembly October 24th.

• BUILD's payday lending steering committee continues their diligent work with Senators Kerr and Adams and allies of the Kentucky Coalition for Responsible Lending (KCRL) to increase the power needed to once again! sponsor legislation in the 2017 General Assembly to end abusive payday lending practices in KY. Watch for forthcoming media releases regarding the impact of this debt trap on KY's citizens.

• BUILD's violent crime committee will continue working with our police chief to seek his willingness to consult with the National Network for Safe Communities (NNSC); an evidenced based program that has significantly reduced violent crime and drug offenses in many communities nationwide.

Seeking justice in action is a faithful response to the Bible's teachings. Second’s Justice Ministry Team: Bill and Fredda Moody, Catherine Hunt, Jim Drahovzal and Judy Maxson are anticipating more of our church family to join us at our Listening-House Meetings this September-October. Your invitation will be coming soon!

JUSTICE MINISTRY NEWS

Sadly, Kentucky is #1 in adult deaths from smoking related illnesses and has the third highest adult smoking rate in the US. It is equally troubling that those who are exposed to 2nd hand smoke get the same toxic

chemicals, like formaldehyde (embalming), carbon monoxide (car exhaust), hydrogen cyanide (chemical weapons), and butane (lighter fluid)--to name a few. Clinical updates from UK Health tell us:

• 2nd hand smoke is associated with hearing loss in former smokers and those who never smoked.

• 2nd hand smoke is linked to 23% greater likelihood of stillbirth & 13% greater chance of congenital malformations.

• common neurobehavioral disorders such as ADHD and learning disorders are 50% higher in homes with smokers.

• asthma, ear infections, respiratory illnesses are associated with smoke exposure.

• illnesses in pets also increases when smoke is present.

Today we have choices to go to smoke free facilities. If you have friends or family who still smoke, encourage them to enroll in a smoking cessation program.

• The Present Word Bible Study: Toward a New Creation - Through Old and New

Testament readings, they will discuss the need for a new creation due to human sin and

disobedience.

• The Theology Class: - Beginning July 3 a DVD series tracing the Apostle Paul's

journey through the Roman Empire will be shown in the Forum Room. Marcus Borg and

John Dominic Crossan are the presenters and lecture on the significance of Paul’s mission

in what is now Greece and Turkey.

The Buckhorn mission trip was held June 23-29. Thanks to Ray Davis, Shirley Caldwell, Randy Master, Glenn Brown, Sue Paulsen, Tambu Chirwa, Kristan Lenning, Ruth Webb-Kelly and David Holden who volunteered their time painting the boys and girls cottages at the Buckhorn Children’s Home.

A Congregational Meeting will be held Sunday, July 10 at noon to vote to upgrade the Associate Pastor position for Rev. Sara Benedetti to include new duties and commensurate salary increase. (We are increasing the responsibilities of Sara and of Rev. David Holden to pick up tasks that had been in Erin Rouse’s job description. The Session has approved David going to full time status. These actions will not create any increase in the total personnel budget for 2016-2017. Details will be provided at the July 10 Congregational meeting.)
