Dear Folks, Things swirling through my mind this morning as I type, the furlough, the Super Bowl, and the Teachers.First the Furlough. With the furlough, there are many people is this area who are facing tougher times than normal, many of whom are our brothers and sisters in this parish. Please pay attention to your friends and neighbors. And for those most directly affected by this furlough, please come and use our parish food bank if needed. Any parishioner in need can come to the parish office and ask for food. We can also help direct you to other resources as needed. We have very active and engaged outreach ministries, and we don’t want to forget our own.

Also, I have asked that we have a petition at every Sunday Mass for the end of the furlough, and we will have it every week until it ends.Second, the Super Bowl. A parishioner told me that back when he was in college many years ago, Vince Lombardi spoke to his football team. He told them that the reason for their multiple championships was that they "love one another." It was about teaching virtue as much as the playbook. Well, I have heard the same things about the teams left this weekend.Virtue, unity, pursuing the good of the whole over self interest... these really do achieve results. The unity of the Catholic Church is supernatural. It is the Holy Spirit who is the unifying factor in the Church and we must become what we are by conforming ourselves to Him. To succeed in defending the life of the Church in America, we must love another, and believe in each other.

Thirdly, I will renew thanks for those who teach the faith in our parish children: our catechists and school teachers. This coming Saturday we are having a dinner to honor and thank all who serve so generously in this way. I treasure these 'social' opportunities for us to be together, to enjoy each other's company and to grow closer together. May we grow in that divine love that will make us champions unto eternal life, whatever obstacles may be in our way. For all catechists and teachers, there is still time to rsvp to Saturday’s dinner, please come.

Opportunities at Holy CrossOur Holy Cross students have many opportunities to explore and refine their musical gifts. Weekly music classes allow them to learn songs from many places and times. This exposure to music throughout the world and down through the centuries opens their minds to the diversity of our world and the people who make it up. They learn music theory and apply it using Orff instruments and recorders.

In their weekly classes, the children also learn the songs for Mass so that we have ‘full and active participation’ in all our school liturgies. 7th and 8th grade members of our chorus, Youth of Note, take on the liturgical role of cantor to lead our assembly in song, along with the full chorus.

Our instrumental program offers band, strings, and keyboarding lessons. We love the many sounds of music that resound in our HCA hallways every day.

Saint Mary Preschool and Holy Cross Academy are a wonderful place to learn and grow. Stop in some time to see us or give us a call at 540-286-1600 and we will tell you all about our wonderful parish school where we learn each day to Live Jesus and to love and care for one another. Our next Open House of the year is on Feb. 3rd, 9:30-noon, for Saint Mary Preschool and 1pm-3pm for HCA. Come and see!

MagnifikidConfiding in Jesus through Mary“Offer all your joys and sorrows to Mary so that she can bring them to her son Jesus. You can do this by speaking directly to her in your own words or reciting a Hail Mary. Entrust her with one of your worries, a sorrow, or a moment of joy which she can offer to God in you.”Do whatever he tells you“Mary tells the servants to obey Jesus. By doing so, they help him work his first miracle. As he was growing up, Jesus obeyed Mary and Joseph too. God loves it when we say “yes” to doing the good things we are asked by those in charge of us. This week, be quick to obey your parents and teachers.” Upcoming Events Tuesday, January 22: Practical Apologetics Workshop by the Office of Catechetics & Divine WorshipSaturday, January 26:Parish Educators Reception at Ristorante Renato’s

Adoration of the Blessed SacramentFrom Wednesday 12:30pm to Friday 9am“Jesus speaks in the silence of the mystery of the Eucharist and reminds us each time that following him means going out of ourselves and making our lives not something we ‘possess,’ but a gift to him and to oth-ers.” – Pope FrancisCome and adore Our Lord in the most beautiful Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. See how the Mass brings us out of the fallen world and into the heav-enly realm, how it resonates with a call from God and a response from his people, the Church, and, most importantly, how we are intimately joined with the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus through the Holy Eucharist.

The Mass will help you understand how to fully, consciously, and actively participate in the source and summit of Christian Life.

Join fellow parishioners for Bishop Robert Barron’s six part DVD series on The Mass. Classes will be held on Monday afternoons beginning Febru-ary 25 at 12:45pm. The cost of the work book with the answers is $32. Due to the size of the community room at the Church, the class size will be limited to 40. There are ten places still available. Call to EvangelizationEmpower your witness! Every day we have opportunities to share our story about why we love being Catholic, but do we? Or, do we hide our light under the proverbial bushel?

This small group's purpose is to sup-port and encourage each other in our efforts to share our faith. We discuss opportunities we’ve had to evangelize, what worked and what didn’t, or what prevented us from trying.

If you want to engage others in con-versation about our faith, join us. We meet every 3rd Sunday between the 10:30am and the 12:30pm masses (except on holiday weekends) in the Courtyard Meeting Room. For more information contact Bryan Richard-son at [email protected]

Ministry SpotlightThe Society of St. Vincent de PaulThe Fredericksburg region is blessed to have the Society of St. Vincent de Paul serving in our area. This beautiful ministry hears and responds to the “cry of the poor” by assisting individuals in need. Named after the 15th century saint, Fr. Vincent de Paul, a French Catholic priest who dedicated himself to serving the poor, his Society continues to this day to give hope to many. How can you get involved?

The St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store operates Monday-Saturday 10am-4pm. It is located at 136 Greenwich Drive Fredericksburg, 22408, 540-898-9066. This store is run 100% by volunteers and they sure could use some help in assisting customers. The store gladly accepts donated items of clothing and household supplies and will even come to your home to pick up donated furniture that’s in good shape. Volunteers with pick-up trucks or large vehicles are also very much needed. All of the sales at the Thrift Store go directly to help those in need in our community.

Every Thursday at 6pm St. Vincent de Paul offers interviews/appointments for those needing emergency financial assistance. These meetings are held at Eastland United Methodist Church 10718 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. With funding limited, the first 30 people in line are assisted each week.

St. Mary’s is a wonderful supporter of the work at St. Vincent Paul. Did you know that the Poor Box in the back of the church goes directly to support their generous work? Through our Poor Box, St. Mary’s parishioners donate approximately $15,000 annually! Thank you for your goodness!

If you are looking for a way to serve those in need, getting involved with the good work of the St. Vincent de Paul Society is a wonderful way. Please consider it. God bless you.

as we “prepare a place for unity and peace” together.

You are invited to a monthly gathering of prayer in the ecumenical tradition of the Taizé Community in France, the second Monday of every month at 8:15pm.It is our hope that this monthly prayer brings together Christians of all churches, pastors and flocks, as together we realize a bit more each day that we must rely upon God’s power to bring about Unity among all who follow Jesus, “as he and the Father are one.” It is something we are unable to do ourselves. This Unity which embraces all people stands at the very heart of Christ’s mission...and belongs to the essence of our community. Let us provide a place where his Spirit can come and fulfill his plan for us.

Help Needed at Homeless ShelterThe Thurman Brisben Home-less Shelter has a program called Bridges. This program operates every Monday from 7-8pm and is designed to provide fun activi-ties for the children staying at the homeless shelter. We are seeking volunteers to lead the kids in activi-ties such as ball, tag etc. and if the weather isn’t cooperating, to lead indoor activities (provided by the shelter). A Sign-Up Genius allows groups or individuals to sign-up easily for evenings available. Please consider helping our community.

Please note, this program requires all participants to arrive early. Vol-unteers MUST complete a registra-tion form and provide a photo ID in an effort to protect the children staying at the shelter.

Drivers Needed for Micah Cold Weather ShelterVolunteers are needed to pick up guests at 6:15pm on Tuesday nights from the community dinner down-town and transport them to the Cold Weather Shelter, using Micah’s 15-passenger bus. Any number of nights you can help would be greatly appreciated. No special license or experience necessary. Micah will provide a short orienta-tion and add you to their insurance. Please prayerfully consider this much needed role and contact Greg Wheatley at [email protected] if interested.

Micah Cold Weather ShelterThe Micah Cold Weather Shelter is open and will remain in operation until mid- to late-March. Teams of Saint Mary volunteers assist on Tuesday evenings by greeting and checking in clients, setting up sleep-ing areas, and providing hospitality for the 30+ individuals that utilize the facility. Each participating church is asked to bring 3 dozen items (white socks, thermal un-derwear, boxer briefs and t-shirts). Please consider how you might be able to support this need—all dona-tions are gratefully accepted at our Parish Office. Although it is a good thing that the temporary shelter is available during the harsh winter months, it highlights the continu-ing need for sustainable housing and support mechanisms in our community. For more information about community efforts to help the homeless, please visit Micah Ecu-menical Ministries, dolovewalk.net or Thurman-Brisben Home-less Shelter, thurmanbrisbencen-ter.org.

Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to attend the Women’s Conference. The St. Mary’s CCW is organizing carpools and/or bus service to the event. Interested in transportation? Contact Karen LaRoche 540-370-4541 or [email protected]. This event will sell-out – only 100 tickets remain!

Church In Latin AmericaLa Colecta Para La Iglesia En América Latina“Share Your Faith” – “Comparte Tu Fe”Next week, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America. For many in Latin America and the Caribbean, rural terrain and a lack of ministers are obstacles to practicing their faith. Your support to the collection provides lay leader-ship training, catechesis, priestly and religious formation, as well as other programs to help share our faith with those who long to hear the Good News of Christ. To learn more, please visit usccb.org/latin-america.

First Offering Contri-butions to Help Offset Cost of Collection EnvelopesEach year in January the envelope packet always includes an envelope marked "First Offering" with a sug-gested donation of $15.00. This is not a regular collection, but merely a request for a free-will offering to help offset the cost of the printing and bimonthly mailing of collection envelopes to more than 5,000 parish families. From July 2017 to June 2018, the parish's cost for the offer-ing envelopes was $31,770.00. First Offering donations received for the same period totaled $4,349.00. Your generosity and support in helping to offset the cost of the envelopes is greatly appreciated.
