WELCOME TO THE NEWLY BAPTIZED!!

Layla Lynn Theresa Barlow Daughter of Joel Francis Barlow and

Leslie M. Wood

Oona Rae Reese Daughter of Raymond Reese and

John wore clothing made of camel's hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. At that time Jerusalem, all Judea, and the whole region around the Jordan were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. - Mt 3:4-6

Well, it has been a few weeks, but I did want to finish part two of my introduction. I wanted to share with you some of the other ministry that I am involved with. One of the major ones that many of you know is that I am the Wing Chaplain at Pease Air National Guard Base. This position is one in which I both provide Pastoral care and counseling, and oversee the Chaplain’s office. I have been at Pease for just over two years, and in charge of the office since Febru-ary. It was a steep learning curve, but has been very inter-esting and rewarding for me. For many years now I have also worked with people who are Deaf and with sign language interpreters to provide services or Bible study or other social events. Sometimes Deaf people come to Church where I am and so you may see me at times signing while celebrating Mass. It is a real-ly powerful experience. Bishops over the years have also asked me to serve on various committees. Currently, I serve on only three com-mittees, having recently finished with a couple of ad hoc ones. I serve on the Public Policy Committee, which advis-es our bishop with regard to legislative activities, and gen-eral issues related to public statements and activities of our bishop and our diocese. For example, should the bishop make a statement regarding some issue in the public fo-rum? I also serve on the Deacon Formation Policy Board, which oversees the recruitment and training of new perma-nent deacons. Since a new class is being recruited now, this Board will have some additional work coming up this year. Lastly, I serve on the Priests Continuing Formation Commission. This Commission plans for retreats, days of prayer, and convocations for us priests to continue in our Pastoral, spiritual, human, and intellectual Formation. This Commission works with our Vicar for Clergy, Fr. Mike Cic-cone. Speaking of whom, some of the Saturdays when I am at Pease for my Guard duty, you will be seeing Fr. Mike for Saturday Mass. I guess that is all I wanted to mention for now. From time to time I do try to get off one Committee or another. They are all important things for the life of our Church, but I do think that we priests should all take turns serving these additional duties. Ultimately though, we do what our bishop asks. God bless, Fr. Thom

RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS Your donation works for aging religious. “I read that roughly 95 percent of donations to the Retirement Fund for Religious aid senior religious,” a donor writes. “That’s won-derful when we truly want our donations to work.” Your gift works for elderly religious by helping to furnish medications, nursing care, and more. Please support next weekend’s collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious, and give to those who have given a lifetime.

SR. LUCIE SAYS

The readings for this Second Sunday of Ad-

vent call out to us to prepare the way of the

Lord. How are we supposed to do that? When

we clear a path in real life, we first get rid of

what is in the way. What is the biggest hin-

drance stops us from going through? Perhaps

downed trees and limbs—a pathway full of

grass—or cobblestones which make it difficult

to walk through. What are the “trees and

limbs” or “cobblestones” on our spiritual jour-

ney? How can we clear the path if needed or

at least begin to weed out the people or things

in our lives that seem to hinder us from re-

ceiving spiritual food for the journey? Let us

recognize what might keep us from loving God

and our neighbor as we should. Indeed, it

seems to be a good time to take our spiritual

inventory and discover how we can make His

Word heard in the “joy of our hearts.”
