Presidents ReportWhat another fantastic season it has been for the Secret
Harbour Surf Life Saving Club. We are very excited to
have fi nished our 2013/14 season by being awarded at
the recent SLSWA Awards of Excellence with:

We commenced the season by receiving the following
awards:
City of Rockingham Sport Stars Awards: Junior Sports Star: Jesika BusseySenior Sports Star: Rob BatesVolunteer Coach: Caroline BatesSecret Harbour SLSC announced as Club of the YearWinner: Secret Harbour SLSC
Australian Drug Foundation’s Good Sports programWestern Australian Good Sports Club of the Year
On behalf of the club I take this opportunity to thank our
members, sponsors, supporters and the local community
for their tireless support and the many volunteer
hours undertaken. These awards are recognition of the
commitment many have given to the club over many
years.
We have been presented with some challenges and have
achieved some great successes along the way.
We have maintained our fatality free record and provided
a very professional service for the public at our local
beach and other events in the community.
One of our early challenges was the unfortunate
resignation of our long serving President Stephen
Bridges. Steve was appointed CEO of a rapidly expanding
company and was fi nding he could spend less and less
time with his beloved Club. Steve and I discussed the
way forward and saw that for Steve to still enjoy being a
member and for the club to maintain stability he would
resign as President and remain a Patrolling Member with
his wife Karen still active in merchandising. This was not
a decision made lightly and we thank Steve for his efforts
during what were at times turbulent periods while he was
at the helm. The Board and I agreed I would immediately
take on the role of President and advertise the Vice
Presidents Position. We were very pleased to welcome
Wendy Malcolm to the Board as Vice President. Wendy
has already brought some very positive and stabilising
qualities to the team.
I am pleased to report we also had three new faces
elected to Board positions, which have provided the
club with a balance of new and not so new members.
This places the club in the perfect position for growth
and succession planning. I would also like to take this
opportunity to thank Stuart Nisbet for his role as Director
of Finance and Administration. Unfortunately due to
work commitments Stuart had to resign in April and Nick
Le Plastrier was invited onto the Board as the Director of
Finance and Administration.
During the season the Board have been reviewing the
club constitution and bylaws and I take this opportunity
to thank Garry Williams for his work in this area. The
Board are also reviewing the strategic plan and will align
this with the State and National plans while maintaining
our own relevance and independence.

Our club has increased in size to some 920 members.
Our new facilities are urgently needed to accommodate
our members and to allow for future growth. Our
Building Upgrade Committee are working hard on
your behalf to achieve the best possible outcome and
timing within project budget constraints and the current
schedule has us occupying the new facilities in the
summer of 2015-16. I take this opportunity to thank Max
Hannah and the Building Upgrade Committee for their
diligence, persistence and enthusiasm on the journey
which has taken about 8 years so far.
Often people ask what motivates me to put time and
effort into Surf Life Saving at our Club, and the other
State and National affi liates. My family has been involved
with Secret Harbour SLSC for over 15 years and we have
enjoyed some wonderful experiences. The main thing
that keeps me involved is seeing people develop within
the organisation. I take this opportunity to share some of
the things I see around the organisation:
• People gaining confi dence and some independence in
the ocean;
• People gaining some confi dence and some
independence in general;
• A nipper (or adult) swimming around the cans for the
fi rst time;
• A adult who can overcome their fear of failure and
attempt a SRC or Bronze Qualifi cation;
• Watching a young nipper develop into being a paid
Lifeguard working for SLSWA or even interstate or
overseas;
• Watching a member becoming a competition offi cial
and attending their fi rst carnival or even eventually
stepping up to referee level;
• Watching our members volunteering and becoming
involved with off beach activities like the BBQ, bar
service, equipment repairs, fi nances, ferrying people to
events, participation in camps to name but a few. The
importance of our off beach activities should never be
discounted. Without them our operational capability
would be compromised;
• See or talking to a member about their fi rst rescue;
• See or talking to someone about handling their initial
and subsequent fi rst aid cases, whether it is a stinger
or a resuscitation;
• Having our members voluntarily join or be invited to
join state committees;
• Having a member join one of the clubs committees or
take on an offi cer role;
• Having a member develop into a trainer and or an
assessor;
• Watching an athlete who has lost the use of their legs
participate and fi nish a surf race;
• Joining a member on their fi rst patrol; and
• If competition is your thing seeing you on the start line
ready to have a go.
As you can see there are many opportunities for you
our members to develop through the organisation if you
wish. It may only have to involve one hour a week. I am
more than happy to discuss development pathways that
may suit or be of interest to you our members.
So as we sign off season 2013/2014 I thank everyone
for their continual support of the club and look forward
to seeing you next year achieving your goals in Surf Life
Saving.

It has been an exciting season for all in the Secret Harbour Surf Life Saving Club. Awards aplenty, this has been a great recognition for the members in our club. I am constantly impressed with the enthusiasm and culture at our club which is something you cannot buy. Our wonderful volunteers deserve a huge vote of thanks and I would particularly like to acknowledge the many hours that go into planning, preparing and delivering day to day operations on the beach, successful carnivals and memorable events. We are lucky to have many great contributors – our sponsors deserve huge accolades in this regard and without their support, achievements such as winning Lavan Legal Club of the Year and Laerdal Patrolling Club of the Year cannot happen – thank you to all.
I have found my own experience in joining to be richly rewarding and very varied. As well as becoming involved in the new draft Constitution, I have spent considerable time looking at the strategic direction of the Club. Our next challenge comes with our exciting new clubhouse building project. As well as the building of this new asset, enormous work must be done to prepare for transitioning to this new environment. Our new clubhouse does not just represent a new and
shiny facility, it represents an opportunity to set Secret Harbour Surf Club up as a vibrant, exciting new hub for our community. In particular, we must see this as a once in a generation opportunity to establish the club as a sustainable business prospect. We must always be striving to build revenue from within our club and make the most of the commercial opportunities the new clubhouse will offer. Use of function facilities, café model and gymnasium are just some of the areas we will be working hard to develop. The fi nancial health of the club is in good shape to take on this venture, the opportunities are exciting and we will be working hard to ensure that our members get the best possible outcome. We will be needing input, feedback and assistance from all of you to deliver an effective operating construct. I look forward to working with you all in this regard.
My thanks to all who have made my fi rst term as Vice President so rewarding. It has been wonderful to become even more involved in our great Club and I look forward to an exciting future for Secret Harbour Surf Life Saving Club.

Club Captain’s ReportWhat a sensational season for SHSLSC with the fi nalisation
of the land for our new club and the building plans being
developed with input from the hard working building up
grade committee and various member committees’. It is
certainly an exciting time for the club heading into the
future with what looks to be a state of the art club house,
for both us and the local community. This year has seen
our membership swell to over 900 people which shows the
level of support and interest there is from the community
towards lifesaving.
This season we were able to increase our patrol groups
from 8 to 10 patrol teams; this was achievable due
to a review of our individual patrols and the ongoing
management of the teams by the Director of Lifesaving,
Rob Bates and his lifesaving committee. The club have
been able to meet all our patrol commitments to an
extremely high standard with no effect on public safety
while maintaining our professionalism, which is a credit to
each and every patrolling member.
The expansion of patrols this season and into the future
would not have been achievable if our lifesavers weren’t
trained to carry out their important job. So we need to
recognise the efforts of the Director of Education, Garry
Hart and his trainers and assessors for the hard work and
commitment they have put into providing the lifesavers
and the local community with the necessary knowledge
and training.
It is not only lifesaving Secrets do well; we also compete at
all levels in the ocean, on the land and in the pool. These
outstanding results cannot be achieved without someone
to provide coordination, guidance and assistance to the
competitors and coaches; this is done by our Director
of Surf Sports Debbie Bird who is supported by a very
capable coaching team covering all disciplines.
And of course we run a very successful youth / nipper
program which provide our younger members valuable
knowledge of the surf and the skills needed to be confi dent
and safe in the ocean. For some they can also compete
and contribute hugely to the clubs success in the overall
carnival results. This is due to the work undertaken by
our Director of Youth Alexis Grayson supported by her
dedicated group of age managers.
This year we have hosted numerous events over the
season; they have included 2 successful boat carnivals,
a state qualifying carnival (yes the one we could not
compete in), Cockburn Crawl and our own club Secret
Harbour Gold and club championships. In addition to
the major events we have also provided water safety for
numerous organisations including the Mandurah Tri, Open
Ocean Swim series and many local school functions just
to name a few. None of this could have been achieved if it
were not for our dedicated members, the support people
have given for these events has provided the club with
badly need funds, so thankyou to all involved.
There is also a lot going on behind the scenes to ensure
we as a club get the funding required to keep our vital
operations going, this never ending task of obtaining
funding support this season has involved the Director
of PR and Sponsorship Carolyn Wilson who has been
instrumental in bringing on board new sponsors and
securing a new vehicle every six months from Rockingham
Holden. Karen Clay has taken on the role of writing and
submitting grant applications to different agencies and
has been successful in securing over 20K so far and Rob
Bates our previous grants offi cer couldn’t help himself and
has also secured signifi cant funding from the Council for
lifesaving over the next 3 years. A great effort by these 3
individuals, but I do realise there are many more people
involved with raising funds around the club by doing things
such as approaching their employers for sponsorship and
donations, doing things in kind and even organising items
for the club to sell, so I would like to thank you all for your
help.
Although the Peel Support Ops are a separate entity to
SHSLSC the team is made up of primarily club members.
The team have provided support for nearly all events
held by the club and can be called upon when needed on
patrol, they are still patrolling the Penguin Island sandbar,
with support from club members, however our club does
receive a large amount of the credit from the public for
the continued patrolling of the sandbar. So I would like to
thank Garry Williams and his team for their efforts at our
beach and for supporting our events.
11
Equipment remains fi rst class, however we have had some
accidental damage occur to the equipment this season,
which is sometimes unavoidable but we all need to ensure
we look after our gear as best we can. If we do damage
equipment please tag it out and report it to the appropriate
person.
It was pleasing to see new club equipment such as the
club IPad for patrols become fully operational towards the
end of the season. There was a vision of how and what we
would use the IPad for but it became a little diffi cult due
to software releases from SLSA not being as advanced as
previously thought, but I am pleased that Stuart Reeves
has taken on the challenge of getting the system fully
operational for next season, he has done a mountain of
work to get it up and running, with some people already
using it via the portal, I look forward to seeing this fully
utilised next season, thanks Stu.
I would like to recognise the WA State Government who
provided a brand new IRB and motor for the club this
season and will provide another brand new CANAM ATV
next season; these items are part of a 3 year initiative that
provides all clubs in WA with an IRB and ATV.
To all those involved with the Aussies this year both
competitors, coaches and managers your commitment to
training and additional work has been outstanding.
Everyone should be proud of the results achieved,
for a small country club Secret Harbour’s name
could clearly be heard across all arenas during the
entire week which highlights the high standard
our club achieves.
As always to allow our athletes to
compete we need the ever
important water safety
and fi rst aiders, some of which was required at short
notice for the Aussies, so thanks to Mark Thomas, Daniel
Andrew, Sarah Wilson, Ian Noorman, Greg Stroot and
Boban Sarich for their efforts in covering the clubs power
craft roster for the event.
So in conclusion I would like to thank all the members for
the support you have provided on the beach or behind
the scenes, we could not grow as a club if it wasn’t for the
efforts of our members.

Life Saving ReportYet another season has passed by for Secret Harbour, our beaches have been kept safe and fatality free due to the commitment of all our patrolling members.
There is no doubt that Secret Harbour beach is popular within our community with an excess of 73,000 visitors during our patrolling season. The weather conditions, with offshore breezes, moderate swells, worked in our favour, with the recorded number of visitors increased this season.
There was a noticeable decrease in fi rst aid treatments, which could be as a result, of fewer stingers in the water this season. Preventable actions increased this season, through the ongoing education of the public and of the quick actions of our patrolling members who are in constant contact with the public while they are visiting the beach, and monitoring the changes in beach conditions.
As result of the great work from our patrolling members rescues this season are down from the previous season.
Behind the scenes, there has been so much achieved, with goals and targets ticked off as the year progressed, including;
• Introduction of 10 rostered patrol teams; • The service agreement re-instated with the City of Rockingham; • Development of youth and new patrolling members into roles of Patrol Captains and Vice captains; • Development of the beach safe IT application; • Management of lifesaving expenditure;• Numerous awards achieved and requalifi cation’s obtained; • Community participation by lifesavers at various community events; and• Introducing an increasing number of SHSLSC patrolling members to Penguin Island in partnership with Peel Support Operations.
The partnership with the City of Rockingham is strong, with the club securing a new three year service agreement, to the value of $10,000 per year for the next 3 years including the current season. This was an excellent result having the agreement re-instated this season, providing SHSLSC lifesaving activities with a welcomed boost to enable the club to continue to invest resources into the Life Saving area.
13
The Life Saving portfolio fi nished the season fi nancially ahead, with a healthy profi t. This was achieved through the management of expenditure, club members participating in water safety events that acted as a fund raising activity for the club, hire of club assets i.e. IRB for water safety and use of club equipment by Surf WA for the life guard service to our beaches provided over the season.
The current board of Directors have agreed to put the profi ts into the future fund for the clubs Life Saving requirement for seasons to come. The club is in a very sound fi nancial position with back up Life Saving Assets not put into service this season.
To further strengthen our Life Saving Resources I would like to thank SLSWA for the gifted IRB and motor, this certainly helps our club maintain rescue ready equipment for the future.
A big thank you to all the patrolling members this season who supported the club with water safety duties, these
events have provided the club the opportunity to increase funding for lifesaving; this season our patrolling members assisted at:
• Mandurah 70.3 triathlon• Swimming WA open water swim at champion Lakes• Swimming WA open water event at Rockingham foreshore• WA Kayak Championships at Champion Lakes• Rockingham Triathlon Club triathlon
Developing our youth membership is something the club should be very proud of, not only did we introduce 4 new Patrol Captains and 4 new Patrol vice captains, the maturity shown by all our leadership group is testament to the proud history of Life Saving here at Secret Harbour Surf Life Saving Club. This season patrolling members agreed to trial and expand to 10 patrol teams, which has worked well, it is pleasing to hear positive feedback from a wide range of the patrolling members.

Through Stuart Reeves, we have pushed ahead with new technology. The perseverance of Stuart to get the SLSA Beach App up and running for our members this year is fantastic. With the help of his team of champions, the beach app will be running for all our members to use next season. Many hours of trialling, ringing the help desk, developing ways around the wireless connectivity, the club can be proud the work that has been achieved once again demonstrates the quality of people we have in our club. Technology is the way of the future and we certainly have made great progress, with the beach app being introduced to training in the last bronze training course.
Due to the nature of the development of the beach safe applications, the club submitted an application for Patrol Club of the year, I am very proud to say Secret Harbour has taken out this award for the 4th consecutive year. What an amazing achievement. This award is a refl ection of the level of professionalism demonstrated by our patrolling members.
By now I am sure most if not all our patrolling membership have heard of about the Challenges of Penguin Island, and the continual great work our club members and with support from the team from the Peel Support Operations group are achieving at Penguin Island. Although the demand has changed with paid life guards picking up the bulk of the season, the club maintained a commitment to fi ll the voids throughout the season. SHSLC Patrolling Members did extremely well in conjunction with the Peel Support Team. This year I believe as a club, we have matured to the next level of experience and professionalism. With the introduction of volunteer patrolling members teaming up with the Peel team as their crew on the Jet skis, to making up patrols on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, members completing patrols outside their allotted patrolling hours have all contributed to this. From a Director of Life Saving, I found this to be a fantastic arrangement, it has lessened the workload, but more importantly it introduced many new patrolling members to the great work we do outside our fl agged area and the impact on an even wider community base. With a greater exposure to more of our membership, the future looks great for not only patrols on our beach but in the wider City of Rockingham.
In closing another successful patrol season there are always many people I would like to thank for their
commitment and support this year; fi rstly the Life Saving Committee: Ian Noorman, Nick McIvor, Luke Stafferton, Danica Bates, Alexis Grayson, Sharee Hart thank you for all for your commitment and tireless efforts on the Lifesaving committee.
Patrols would not run without all our Patrol Captains: Sharee Hart, Grant Stirling, Daniel Andrew, Digby Wilson, Rick Lowe, Megan Williams, Dave Howarth, Danica Bates, Alannah Wilson, Dave Vaughan, and these members were backed up and supported by great bunch of Vice captains: Lee McGovern, Mark Turley, Carolyn Wilson, Steve Bridges, Tim Wilson, Peter Traeger, Mark Dove, Matt Osborne, Ian Phillips. Thank you all.
A special note and congratulations to our top 3 leading Patrol hour members:
• Matthew Tonkin 190.8 hours• Jessica Tonkin 134.5 hours• Liam Bates 114.8 hours
These upcoming patrolling members registered over 100 hours this season, a huge effort and the club applauds you... well done.
In closing, I would just like to thank all the people who have supported me in my fi rst year as Director of lifesaving. There are too many people to mention but they know who they are. I thank those who I approached as sounding boards, drawing on their past experiences, I thank the Board of Management and all our Patrolling Members. Finally thanks Caroline for your patience and support.
I would like to wish the club all the best for our next season, there are big things on the horizon.

We had another record year for club membership, with a
total of 922 members for the 2013/14 season. Needless
to say other portfolios will focus on WA Club of the Year
Award, plus 4th consecutive Patrol Club of the Year.
These club awards are refl ected in this year’s results, with
improved outcomes in the Social and Bar activities of the
club. The efforts of Jo Thodis and Tracey Poad should not
be underestimated.
The fi nancial results were strong, with increased income
from functions, grants and sponsorship combined
however costs also increase as the size of the club grows.
The year ended with a profi t of $75,737 and $282,170
in the bank. Our balance sheet also remains strong and
we are well placed for the future. The combined Building,
Boat & Lifesaving Future Fund is now $118,247.
The audit has concluded on target and has allowed the
fi nancial reports to be presented to the AGM on the 25th
July 2014. We are constantly looking at ways to improve
our systems and thanks to a grant from the City of
Rockingham were able to implement a new version of our
fi nancial accounting software enabling better access and
faster reporting.
The administration of the club is ever increasing. We are
very lucky to have a team of volunteers, without whom the
club would not be able to run as smoothly as it does. They
are Caroline Bates, Barb Sarich, Greg Stroot, Jo Thodis,
Kristen Booth, Sarah Lowe, Megan Anderson, Karen
Bridges, Julie McGovern and Sharon Phillips. Sharon was
recognised for her efforts this year, with her nomination
and fi nal shortlisting for SLSWA Club Administrator of
the year. This recognised her outstanding efforts and the
additional volunteer hours she has invested in the running
of the club. I also wish to thank Stuart Nesbit for his
services to the club as the previous Director of fi nance
and Admin.
As the club continues to grow we need more members
to take an active part in shaping the clubs future by
contributing their time and experience. There are a number
of roles and committee positions available. You will be
donating to an organisation of dedicated volunteers who
provide a unique service to our community.

Building Upgrade Committee ReportThe Building Upgrade Project has now been running
for seven years and it is fair to say the end is in sight.
Membership of the committee is Billy Bevan, Max
Hannah, Wendy Malcolm, Ross Onions, Ron Wade and
Digby Wilson.
The program from here will be as follows.
Until 06/14 Concept design fi nalisation
07/14 – 09/14 Detailed design & documentation
10/14 – 12/14 Tender process & award of
construction contract
01/15 – 12/15 Construction
Early 2016 Project completion
The completion date is earlier than reported in the
2013 Annual Report and is back in line with the
completion date predicted in the Feasibility Study
prepared by Creating Communities in October 2010.
The fi nal concept design no longer requires a staged
construction program. The clubhouse will now be
constructed in one stage followed by demolition of the
existing facility and landscaping of the footprint area.
Secret Harbour Developments Pty LtdIt is pleasing to report the project would not have
proceeded to this point without support from the
developer. The car park land the new clubhouse is to
be built upon is part of a large commercial property
owned by the developer. Part of the commercial
property was previously developed into the Foreshore
Village complex which included Al’s Café and other
retail outlets, along with the two sections of carpark in
front of our existing clubhouse.
Negotiations between the City of Rockingham and the
developer over the past twelve months have resulted in
portion of the commercial property being transferred to
the City’s control. This portion of land will now be used
for the construction of the new clubhouse.
Prior to this property becoming available our existing
land was insuffi cient to construct the size of clubhouse
facility required. This why earlier proposals were for
the clubhouse to consist of two separate buildings
which would have been far less convenient.
We certainly do appreciate the support received
from Secret Harbour Developments Pty Ltd and the
professional work of the City’s staff who negotiated this
excellent outcome.
Technical Reference Group - SubcommitteesAppreciation is extended to those members who
volunteered their time and expertise to one or more
of the eight subcommittees established to support
the project. Valuable input was received from the
subcommittees which has helped to determine the fi nal
design for the project. One particular outcome of this
process worthy of special mention is the requirement
for IT and junior members’ facilities. These facilities
were identifi ed by the subcommittees and have now
been included in the fi nal design, along with numerous
other features that had been initially overlooked by the
architectural design team.
For the record we list the TRG Subcommittees and their
membership.

* Multi-purpose Community Use Facilities
The work of these subcommittees has not yet
concluded. Signifi cant planning will be required to
ensure a smooth transition into the new clubhouse
when completed. It now appears the move will occur
during the 2015/16 surf life saving season so moving
in and getting on with business will be of paramount
importance when the time comes.
Additional Items for AttentionIt is pleasing to note that progress has been made on
those areas listed for extra attention in the 2013 Annual
Report.
Supplementary FundingThe project budget established by the City of
Rockingham will provide the club with a structural
facility that will accommodate our spacial needs
into the future. As was the case with the existing
clubhouse, the club will then be responsible for the
majority of the fi xings and furnishings, for example fl oor
coverings, security requirements, IT equipment, loose
furniture, gear storage facilities, catering and hospitality
equipment, cool room, etc.
Specifi cally for this purpose, the club has for many
years made annual transfers of funds into the Building
Fund. The current balance of this fund is shown in the
fi nancial statements included elsewhere in this Annual
Report. Clearly, this balance is well short of the funds
that will be required to completely fi t out and furnish
the clubhouse to the standard and level required.
At every opportunity, the club will lodge applications
for special purpose funding. For example, an
application was recently lodged with the Rotary Club
of Rockingham for additional IT equipment.
To further compliment this, Vice President Wendy
Malcolm has joined the Building Upgrade Committee
to further pursue supplementary funding avenues.
We welcome Wendy’s appointment and look forward
to positive outcomes.
Governance ModelIt is pleasing to note the Board has established
a Constitution & By-Laws Committee to review
our current governance structure and make
recommendations for amendment. A couple of
structural options are under consideration by
the committee and we look forward to a positive
conclusion to this process.
Strategic PlanIt is also pleasing to note that progress has been
made on this vitally important requirement for the
future of the club. As noted in the 2013 Annual
Report, the time frame for the existing strategic plan
has well any truly expired and it is time to put a new
plan in place.
It has been reported that a consultant has been
engaged to guide the club through this process and
the Board is to be highly commended for this positive
development.
Again we extend appreciation and congratulations
to all members who have to date contributed to this
project and to its ultimate success. The past year
has also seen solid ongoing support from Councillor
Chris Elliott and a number of City of Rockingham staff
who are providing essential expertise and input to the
project.

and Secret Harbour community for over 30 years. It is
only with the support of our sponsors and supporters that
we can continue to provide our local community and the

to our youth, education and other member services. We
thank you for your support.

SHAKE-A-TIN (Street appeal)A big thank you to the amazing team of collectors on the
day; you all did a fantastic job raising just over $3,886, an
increase from last year. My goal is to increase this each
year with the assistance of our members.
Thank you to Secret Harbour, Centro Warnbro and Waikiki
shopping centres and Bunnings Warehouse Port Kennedy
for allowing us to do this annual collection.
BOARDIES DAYAnother wonderful fundraising initiative celebrating
summer and the “red and yellow”. An excellent effort
once again by Comet Bay Primary, raising over $900. Thank
you to all the schools and businesses that participated.
CARNIVALS and FUNDRAISINGSecret Harbour hosted 2 boat carnivals and the Junior state
qualifi er for SLSWA this season. The carnivals proved very
successful for both competitors and raising funds for the
club. Thank you to all those for staffi ng the BBQs.
GO FOR CUPAnother successful day is our annual 9 holes of golf day
held on the 31st Dec each year. It was a fun way for club
members to enjoy the last day of the year, along with some
sponsors who were able to join us. The many stories of
amazing golf shots and heroic tales from the golf course
were shared at the club after the event. With some fund-
raising to cap off the day and we have a winner. Thanks
to Ron and Kim Wade for their dedication in organising
this again for 2013 and Jo Thodis and her team for a great
atmosphere at the club afterwards.
SUNDAY BBQ’SAnother big thank you to Jo Thodis for leading the sausage
sizzle team on Sunday mornings. For all that have helped
on a Sunday, not only have you raised funds for the club,
but you have fed a lot of hungry nippers and their mums
and dads as they come off the beach! Jo I congratulate
you on involving club members (stalking them) every
Sunday, although they may be hesitant at fi rst, they have
such a good time, they are keen to return and help again
and again.

Training & EducationIIt has been another busy year in the education front for
Secret Harbour. The 2013/14 season has again shaped up
to be another outstanding year for our education team,
who ensured our members are appropriately trained,
have requalifi ed their awards and have had access to
training so as to up-skill. This winter we are embarking
again on fi rst aid courses, age manager’s course and will
also be completing IRB crew and driver training over
the winter months. We are slowly getting light handed
in the IRB crew and drivers department, so if you have
been contemplating IRB’s and love excitement, now’s the
time. Please look for the training Calender on the Web
Site. This year Secret Harbour has been lucky to have
the support of a number training coordinators. The Clubs
gratitude and thankyous go to:
• Carolyn Wilson: First Aid Coordinator
• Mark Dove: Bronze Coordinator
• Paul Bird: Surf Rescue Certifi cate
Coordinator
• Megan Williams: Power Craft Coordinator
It would also be remiss of me not to mention the
following members who volunteered their time to train
and assess, and as a club we really appreciate their time
and expertise.
• Mark Dove • Paul Bird
• Danica Bates • Chloe Howarth
• Daniel Andrew • Alexis Grayson
• Rick Lowe • Carolyn Wilson
• Megan Williams • Garry Williams
• Sharee Hart • Digby Wilson
• Craig Graydon • Ian Phillips
This year the team trained some 581 awards including
Nipper Surf Safe and requalifi ed another 318 awards.
This represents a signifi cant commitment by our
collaborative team of Trainers and Assessors. We are
very proud of Alan who is a young 74 year old achieving
his Bronze, which I believe would be close to record
for SLSA. The success of these awards could not have
been achieved without your dedication. It is fantastic to
see 7 past members return to our club and requalify and
patrol. Please spread the word, we want you all back.
The Adults SRC course coupled with the junior course
saw 37 new qualifi ed Surf Rescue Certifi cates on Secret
Harbour Beach. This and other opportunities are certainly
testament to the continuous training and assistance all
volunteers give to train up and coming new lifesavers
wearing Red and Yellow, serving our community on
Secret Harbour Beach; how proud we are!! SRC’s on
our beaches, are imperative as we continue to develop
and grow as a Club, both educationally and strategically.
SRC’s all had a wonderful time in learning many new
skills in fi rst aid, CPR, Board and tube rescues, while
experiencing other facets of ‘life on the beach’. The older
and more knowledgeable Cadets were able to step up
and assist with training.
Within the community there are various ongoing
commitments our trainers and assessors continue from
season to season.
South Coast Baptist College: This season we continued
our partnership with South Coast Baptist College
(formerly Maranatha Christian College) through the
support of Corey May and will be further developing
this fantastic program with some 32 SRC’s graduated in
2013. They are also about to embark on completing their
Recreational Skippers Ticket (RST) within the next few
weeks.
Bethanie Waters Lifestyle Village: We have also
continued to develop a commercial partnership with
Bethanie Waters Lifestyle Village to provide ongoing
CPR training to residents thanks to Megan William’s
commitment.
Local Football Associations: Digby Wilson is also
putting our brand into the community with the training
of local football coaches in CPR and fi rst aid. If you
know some organisation in the community that would be
interested please bring it to our attention.
The ongoing support of the clubs training and education
team ensures the quality and delivery of our programs
are excellent. The up skilling of our members in awards
is one of the keys to putting our highly professional
patrols on Rockingham Beaches and to provide a safe
environment for all to enjoy our great Australian outdoor
lifestyle that draws us to the beach. With everybody’s
assistance during training and during patrols we, as a
club have formed a solid educational framework for all to
save lives and build better communities.

House and Social ReportHouse and Social began its season with Registration Day.
We took the opportunity of having a BBQ to help make
this chaotic day a social and enjoyable one. We promoted
the various areas the club has on offer with a jet ski on
display to represent patrols with our Patrol Captain on
call, training provided information on fi rst aid, Bronze and
SRC courses, the Rockingham swim school was there, as
were Boaties representatives, and merchandise. Cadets
kindly took up brush and paint and face painted our
excited Nippers before they unceremoniously washed it
off on the slippery slip.
A Members Welcome day was to follow to embrace
our new members and once again showcase the variety
of activities the club has on offer to its members. The
clubrooms were open for a mix and mingle, there were
lots of kid’s activities, and we were entertained by our
very own Nipper parent, and Age Manager, Mick Wyburd
and his band.
Friday nights became ever popular with curry-nights,
pasta-nights, and pizza-nights. Piñata’s were a hit! These
evenings coincided with board training, fi tness training,
meetings, and the March Past team practice. Other Friday
night events included the Halloween party, a romantic
pizza by candlelight when our proposed Movie night
suffered a blackout, and a footy night.
Our new Bar Manager, Tracy Poad, assisted by Jeff Poad,
worked tirelessly on Bar compliance and installed non-
slip mats, door seals, assessed glass sizes and licensing,
as well as bar staff requirements. The bar procedures
were reviewed and streamlined for ease of use by our
volunteers. A price review was undertaken and new
prices implemented, as was the updating of the till thanks
to the assistance of Barb Sarich. Rosters were fi lled
and stocktakes performed on a regular basis, pleasing
our auditors. The bar was hugely successful this season
increasing its productivity and safety. Thanks to everyone
who volunteered behind the bar and to all those that
patronised it with enthusiasm.
The weekly Nippers BBQ’s were delivered by House and
Social on behalf of the Youth Portfolio. We catered for
between 400-600 nippers, parents, siblings and public
each Sunday. The increase in Nipper registrations lead
to an increase in the demand for our BBQ. Each week
a different age group was allocated BBQ duty beginning
from U7’s ranging to Cadets. A number of healthy
options were introduced to our menu to comply with our
accreditation as a Good Sports Club Level 2. Mia’s bakery
became our preferred bread supplier and delivered fresh
rolls cooked early on Sunday morning. We also leased a
coffee machine which became a hit in the canteen even
after a slow start.
We provided a comfortable and cosy kids room for the
Nippers to rest after a busy session on the beach. A desk
was added and activity books to keep the kids occupied,
allowing their parents to socialise in the knowledge
that their children were close by in a safe and relaxed
environment.
Twin BBQ’s catered for a number of notable events, such
as the Boaties carnivals and Junior Qualifi er carnival, where
we fed 1,200 people supplying bacon and eggs as well
as sausages, burgers and snacks to everyone from water
safety and fi rst aid volunteers to offi cials and competitors.
We held a Christmas party and band afternoon, helped
organise the Nippers Christmas party and Nippers wind-
up. For New Year’s we hosted the Go For Golf Day and
sang away at the New Year’s Eve party with a juke box,
karaoke and adult slushies.
The season culminated in the Club Awards night. One of
our Nippers parents and patrolling member, Nicki Ralph,
catered the evening making it a very sophisticated and
memorable night. Thanks to our bar tenders Carol Tonkin
and Rhyanna Stroot for volunteering behind the bar on
this night of nights.
Just for fun we had a ‘count the Life Savers in the jar’
fundraiser, ‘Lucky numbers’ fundraisers, a wine fundraiser
and weekly members draw.
Special thanks and appreciation go to Barb Sarich for
supplying us with change each week, to Deb Bird, Lyla
and Darren Hall, Julie McGovern, Kristen Booth, Anne-
Marie Dullaghan, and to our Administrative offi cer Sharon
Phillips who managed all the private functions, arranged
cleaning, keys, maintenance, and all the administration
associated with the House and Social Portfolio.

Honorary mention must go to my husband Greg Stroot and son
Dion Stroot for all the snags they have turned, for hauling gas
bottles, ice bags, setting up chairs, tables, tents and emptying
countless bins. I couldn’t manage without you guys.
It takes a massive team effort to feed so many people each
week and to come up with social ideas that engage and
entertain our members. Thank you to all the volunteers, from;
enthusiastic Nippers, siblings of Nippers, parents of Nippers,
cadets, board members and their partners, grandparents, and
all of those other patrolling members for your contribution
and support of House and Social.
Looking Forward
This year we also had our fi rst serious look at plans for the
new clubhouse. The building subcommittee consulted widely
among the many portfolios and House and Social was no
exception. The fl oor plans were presented, scribbled over,
returned and scribbled all over again. We are confi dent the
result will be a fabulous place for us to enjoy for many years
to come. For “House and Social” it promises to birth a new era
with its function room, cosy club bar and third fl oor balcony.
The next few years will bring some challenges as the
construction begins. While I’m sure the Builders and Board
will do their best to make the transition as smooth as possible,
I’m also trusting that the club’s diehard members will keep the
“social” momentum going so that when the new “house” is
fi nally unveiled House and Social can bring on a doozy of a
housewarming.

Youth DevelopmentA wonderful season this year with the most amazing
weather I think I have ever seen. It was warm, sunny and
perfect for every nipper Sunday except for our fi nal one
unfortunately we also have great weather.
We had a record number of children signed up this season
bringing with them some great parents who have become
quite involved with the club.
The U14 age group went through their SRC at a camp held at
Pt Peron School Camp. Some interesting stories occurred
at camp but as I am sworn to secrecy, what happens at
“camp stays at camp”. All I can say is that everyone had
fun and we laughed a lot. Speaking of camps, we were
lucky again this season with SLSWA giving us 4 places on
the TOAD camp and 3 places on the Rise Up camp. These
camps take youth from each club in the state and then
get them to work together while having fun and making
friends. Again the kids had a great time and told me it
was ‘AWESOME’. The fi nal camp I must mention is the
cadet YIPS camp run by Garry and Megan Williams, Mark
Dove and Luke Stafferton. The group went to Moore River
and were able to have fun on their boards, be introduced
to IRB, Surfboats and Skis and also undertake some sand
boarding, and kayaking. From all reports the camp was
not just fun for the kids but the leaders had a ball too.
These camps, education, awards and fun activities would
not be possible if it weren’t for our wonderful sponsors.
This year we had help from Lorraine Dove, Remax Realty,
Paul Papalia the Local Member for Warnbro, Stuart Reeves
of Fitzroy Professional Services, City of Rockingham and
BHP Billiton Nickel West. Unfortunately we are losing
Nickel West for the next season after having sponsored us
for 10years. This sponsorship has been vital in supporting
our youth programs and purchasing equipment for this
area. We thank Nickel West for this sponsorship and
maybe we can partner again sometime in the future.
That brings me to our competitive juniors. What an
absolutely wonderful team of kids we had competing
this season. There were four carnivals during the
season, Sorrento, Fremantle, Denmark and then Country
Championships at Trigg. The kids did the club proud
keeping Secret Harbour’s name constantly on the loud
speaker. Great effort by all the kids, parents, team
managers, offi cials, water safety and coaches, everyone
had fun even though we were all exhausted by the end.
Lastly a huge thank you to those that have helped out
every Sunday at Secret Harbour. The set up team of Tim,
Jo, Graham, Steve and a few other parent helpers who
raked and measured early each Sunday so the nippers
could have a good session; all the Age Managers who
took those ever increasing groups of kids through games
and skills with enthusiasm even though some of the age
managers had not even been in country for very long;
the Junior Club Captains Matt and Samantha for working
with the nippers throughout the season; our Water Safety
offi cer Daniel with some assistance from Sharee and Birdy
who helped with this too, the IRB driver Benno and his
crewies watching from the water, all the u14’s and newly
qualifi ed SRC parents that went out into the water dressed
in bright orange and of course the various Patrol teams
who backed us up to keep everyone safe. It was a great
team effort and I hope we can do it all again next season,
because we can’t do it without you.

Surf Sports ReportSecret Harbour has had a fantastic year in competition this
season. There is so much potential in this portfolio and
we will only grow. The quality of youth/cadet and master
competitors coming through will guarantee the success of
our Club in Surf Sports of all areas.
This was my fi rst season as the Director of Surf Sports
and one I found extremely challenging, but also very
rewarding. To see the improvement in all areas of Surf
Sports and the commitment to training, competition
and attendance was impressive and the numbers didn’t
decrease over the whole season which says we are doing
something right.
This season we opened up Wednesday Board Training to
u/8’s – u/10s thanks to the initiative of Sharee Hart for
approaching me with this and running with the programme.
This group had no less than 20 young nippers at training
every week and the smile on the kids participating was
fantastic.
In saying all that, the success of Surf Sports is due to
my Team of Coaches and Committee, so thank you for all
your support and dedication this season. Thanks you to:
• Head Coach: Alannah Wilson
• Cadets: Carolyn Wilson, Barry (Bones) Jarret
Alannah Wilson, Sam Maurice, Tony
Maurice and Lee McGovern
• Pool Rescue: Caroline Bates
• March Past: Robyn Bevan
• u/13: Ingrid Ostle
• u/12: Rick Lowe and Nick McIvor
• u/11 and
Beach Coach: Alexis Grayson
• u/8s – u/10s: Sharee Hart and Nicola Awang
Thank you to the following Surf Sport Committee
members:
• Boat Captain: John Turner
• Ski Captain: Sam Maurice
• Board Captain: Lee McGovern
• Fitness: Garry Williams
The Club has shown their dedication to our Competitors
by purchasing 5 new Bennett cadet boards, 2 Fenn
adjustable skis and a double ski for our Competing
Athletes to try out and borrow. My aim is to implement a
leasing programme for our Athletes to utilise over the next
couple of seasons.
Secret Harbour GoldThe participation in this event grows each year. We had
32 awesome competitors take on the 1km swim, 2km
board, 2km run and 4km ski, either individually or as a
team. Thank you to Max Hannah and Fran Meadley from
FROGMAT Landscape Construction for their continued
sponsorship of this event each year.
Club ChampionshipsThis is our one club competition day for our cadets/
masters to shine and have fun doing so. It was a great
morning and even though the weather wasn’t the best
we still had 22 competitors turn up and have ago. Well
done to all. I’m planning for next year to being bigger and
better.
Carnivals HostedThe Club hosted a Junior State Qualifi er, both State and
National Surfi ng Events; in the State competition we saw 4
medals received. Congratulations to Lee McGovern, Ben
Bird, Tyson Sarich and Jessie Mae Wyatt. We also hosted
2 Boat Carnivals and a board and ski series this season, a
mammoth effort to all concerned.
Country/Master ChampionshipsThis Carnival is one of my personal favourites and what
a blinder our Competitors had this year. Our Stand outs
were Josh Maurice and Jesika Bussey who blitzed the
competition and came home with 9 medals each.
Ewan Fletcher and Sam Maurice 5 medals, Joe Ford,
Breanna Bird, Liam Bates, Chris Collins, Brooke Poad and
Jacob McIvor 4 Medals and all of our three Boat Crews
medalled (more details provided in the Boat report).
A grand total of 99 medals, our best Countries yet!
Congratulations to everyone who participated.
WA State Senior and Junior ChampionshipsThis is the best of the best and tough competition.
Congratulations to everyone who qualifi ed to get to this
stage, you all represented your club well. Well done to
Joshua Maurice; Bronze in u/19 boards and Gold in the
U/19 double Ski with Jorden Ringrose, Mana Runnion;
Silver in U/15 2km Beach Run and Chris Collins; Gold in

WA State Pool Rescue
A group of 11 of our club members entered the States for
Pool Rescue with nearly everyone medalling. Liam Bates
came out with 8 medals, fantastic effort. Congratulations
to all the other competitors Jesika Bussey, Alannah
Wilson, Josh Wood, Sean Phillips, Samantha Lowe, Jessica
Williams, Angela Aislabie and, John Cahill and Rob Bates.
Well done all.
Cockburn CrawlThis event has run for its 8th year now. Unfortunately
numbers were down to 68 this year, which was mainly due
to a full calendar also it is a very busy time of year. Thank
you to everyone that gave up their time and helping out
with the running of this event. Thanks you to our sponsor
the City of Rockingham.
AUSSIESWe had the privilege of the Aussies being held at
Scarborough Beach this year so we had 40 of our members
competing. We had some of our U/14’s competing up and
they really enjoyed the experience. Our Boaties put in a
fantastic effort, not to mention our Masters and Opens
Competitors. Thank you to Tony Maurice for stepping
up as Team Manager for the Club. Congratulations
to everyone on their efforts. Thank you to all that Age
Managed, IRB, and Offi cial or undertook water Safety.
Club Swim/Board/SkiThe Sunday morning club swim/board and ski race is
a fantastic way to have a go at different lifesaving surf
sport events and the aim is to get everyone involved. I
changed the time this year to 8:30am due to conditions at
11am being generally uninviting most Sundays (the wind
is always up) and I feel this helped with the numbers of
people joining in.
We try and run this every Sunday over the season so it’s
not aimed at just the competition members but the whole
club.
Also a big thank you to everyone who did the Coaches
Course this season: Mark Dove, Matt Evans, Nicola Awang
and Tony Maurice. I already have had members express
an interest to go on the course this season so they can
come on board and help with Surf Sports.
Our Offi cials attended carnival after carnival, I could
always rely on: Digby and Carolyn Wilson, Tina Runnion,
Karl Roots, Alexis Grayson, Garry and Sharee Hart, Rick
Lowe and Nick McIvor. We need some more help in this
area and if members would like to put their hand up to
undertake the offi cial’s course please let me know. Last
but not least to everyone that did Water Safety and First
Aid, our competitors couldn’t have competed without you
stepping up to help.
Deb BirdDirector of Surf Sports
Boat Captain’s Report Wow! What a huge season it was for the surf boat
section.
It was a very long and demanding season with an earlier
start than normal and of cause a late fi nish due to the
Aussies. Most of our rowers continued their strength
and conditioning training right through the winter
months. With the dreaded Ergo sessions also in full
swing right through the winter and pre-season months.
Despite a few disruptions with availability of experienced
sweeps most crews were back on the water by August/
September and trained hard right through till the end of
March.
Secret Harbour again hosted two fantastic surf boat
carnivals early in the season.
ASRL Triple Crown Series – Sunday 13th October 2013
This event was an opportunity for the best of the best
open men’s and women’s surf boat rowers in WA to fi ght
it out for a chance to represent WA in the Eastern states
at three National ASRL surf boat events. Although no
Secret Harbour crews competed that day the club hosted
a very successful day. The spectators were treated to an
action packed morning as big swell provided plenty of
thrills and spills.
SLSWA Navy Surf Boat Series Round 1 – Sunday 17th
November 2013
Again Secret Harbour hosted a very successful and
professionally run event. This carnival kicked off the WA
surf boat season with a bang as a huge fi eld of almost
50 crews battled it out in tough conditions. Our beach
turned on some great swell which made for an action
packed day.
The success of both events would not have been
possible without the assistance of so many wonderful
helpers from within the club. Hosting these boat
carnivals is a huge logistical effort and provides the club
great exposure and much needed fundraising. A huge
thank you goes out to everyone who helped with the set
up and running of both of these great events.
The club also competed in the following carnivals;
• Round 2 Navy Boat Series @ Quinn’s Mindarie –
Sunday 1st of December 2013
• Round 3 Navy Boat Series @ Port Bouvard –
Sunday 15th of December 2013
46
47
• Round 4 Navy Boat Series @ Scarboro –
Sunday 12th of January 2014
•Country Carnival @ Denmark –
Saturday 25th of January 2014
•State Masters and Country Club Championships
@ Trigg – Saturday 1st of March 2014
The Secret Harbour boaties can all be very proud of their
achievements at this carnival. Their wonderful results are
listed below;
The Secret Gems – Sweep: Ross Onions
Rowers: Kellie Turner, Sharee Hart, Karen Clay and
Meagan Williams
•Gold Medal Open Women’s Country Club
Championships.
•Bronze Medal Women’s 160’s State Masters Title.
The Secret Six Packs: Sweep: Rohan Pugh (Pughy)
Rowers: Rob Bates, Nick McIvor, John Turner and Garry
Hart.
•Gold Medal Open Men’s Country Club Championships.
The Secret Agents: Sweep: Brendan Privilege (Beno)
Rowers: Garry Williams, Rohan Pugh, Rick Lowe and
Matt Osborne.
•Silver Medal State Masters Championships.
It was great to see so many Secret Harbour medals that
day. Awesome Effort by All!
Aussies @ Scarboro – Tuesday 1st of April 2014.
This again was a very exciting time for our boaties as for
most it was their very fi rst Aussie Titles.
The club again doing very well against the best crews in
the country.
The Secret Gems – 6th overall in the women’s 160’s
masters.
The Secret Six Packs – 10th overall in the men’s 160’s
masters.
The Secret Agents – 12th overall in the men’s 180’s
masters.
All three crews did the club proud and competed
strongly against much larger and more experienced
clubs. This was a great experience for everyone involved
Boat Captain’s Report cont’d
and the club can be very proud of the way they were
represented.
As you can see it was a huge season! A big thank you
must go to all of our wonderful sweeps. Ross Onions,
Brendan Privilege and Rohan Pugh again put in a huge
amount of time effort to keep our great sport alive and
well within this club. I would also like to acknowledge
the huge amount of time and effort Paul Bird
contributed to the boaties season as a back sweep and
also his boat and trailer maintenance skills. Thank you
also Dave Mitton who also helped out as a back-up
sweep to assist in training when required.
I would also like to acknowledge the countless hours
put in behind the scenes from our dedicated Boat
Committee Members – Sharee Hart, Karen Clay,
Nick McIvor and Rick Lowe. Also on behalf of the
Boat Committee I would like to thank Deb Bird as
our fearless leader in Surf Sports for her ongoing
dedication and support.
We also thank our sponsors for their ongoing support
Greg Watts and MDW Environmental Services and
Nick and Tracey McIvor from McIvor Plumbing.
In conclusion we have had a great season and it is
pleasing to see the sport of Surf Boat Racing is alive
and well in our club. However as the majority of our
current rowers are all in masters age groups we are
desperately seeking an injection of youth into the
boat section. This great sport offers physical strength
and fi tness, surf skills, excitement and exhilaration
and most importantly teamwork! If you have ever
wondered what it would be like to row surf boats then
please make contact with myself or any other boatie
from the club you know and we will happily organise
an opportunity for you to have a go.
Look forward to an even bigger and better 2014/15
season!
John Turner. Club Boat Captain
