Fire protection of structural steelFire protection design

FireprotectionAnysteelsectionwhichisanelementofstructureandisdeemedbyanyofthefollowingregulationstorequirefireresistancecanbeprotectedwithafireprotectionsystemofdenserockmineralwoolslabsorfibrereinforcedgypsumbasedboards.

Structuralsteelrequiresfireprotectionbecauseitlosesstructuralstrengthattemperaturesthatcanberapidlyreachedinabuildingfire.Thiswillconsequentlyhaveanegativeimpactonthestructuralintegrityofthebuilding.Protectingthestructuralsteelfromtheheatofafirewilldelaytheonsetofthislossofstrengthandthepossiblecollapseofthebuilding.Thisisessentialbecauseitallowsextratimeforboththeoccupantsofthebuildingtoescapeandfireservicestotacklethefire.Itcouldalsopreventtheactualcollapseofthebuildingminimisinginsurancelosses.BuildingRegulationscoveringfiresafetyareconcernedwiththepreservationoflife.

Withtheincreasinguseofstructuralsteelinconstruction,designersneedfireprotectionsolutionsthatprovideacombinationoffastinstallationandcost-effectivenesswhilstachievingthedesiredfinish.

WhatevertheapplicationKnaufInsulationhasarangeofboardproductsandsystemstocaterforanyproject.

Inadditioncavitybarriersarealsorequiredtobeplacedabovefireresistingpartitions.Bothglassandrockmineralwoolproductsareidealtoactascavitybarriersduetotheirinherentnon-combustibility.

Inthecaseoffirestoppingminorimperfectionsoffitbetweenconstructionelementsorcomponents,itisacceptabletosealsmallgapswithunfacedglassorrockmineralwoolproducts.However,forspecificperiodsoffireresistanceinsmallandlargevoids(asrequiredbytheBuildingRegulations)itisnecessarytousespecificproductsthathavebeentestedandassessedtooffertherequiredperformancewheninstalledinaspecificway,ifnecessary,usingspecificfixingcomponents.

ConcealedcavitiesFireandsmokespreadinconcealedspacesisparticularlyhazardousbecausefirecanspreadquicklythroughoutabuildingandremainundetectedbytheoccupantsofthebuilding.

Cavitybarriersareusedtosubdividecavitiesandsopreventsmokeandflamefromby-passingfire-resistingwallsandpartitions.Themaximumdistancebetweenbarriersmustbeappropriatetothelocationofeachcavity.Also,dueconsiderationmustbegiventotheclassofsurfaceexposedwithinthecavity.

Cavitybarriersshouldachieveatleast30minutesfireresistance,providingaminimumof30minutesintegrityand15minutesinsulation.

Detailedrequirementsarecomplex.ForfulldetailsaboutthepositionandspacingofcavityfirebarriersrefertotherelevantsectionsoftheappropriateBuildingRegulations.

SmallcavitybarriersSmallvoidsincludethecavitiesinexternalwallsandvoidsbeneathraisedaccessfloors.Largervoidsincludethespacesbetweensuspendedceilingsandsoffitsorroofs.

Incavitiesinexternalwallstheresilientpropertiesofglassmineralwoolmeanthatitcanbecompressionfitted,betweentheouterleafandtheinnerleaforframe.Thenon-combustiblenatureofglassmineralwoolallowsittoresisttheeffectsoffire,enablingittoremaininplaceduringthefireandeffectivelyblockthetransferoffirethroughthecavity.

LargecavitybarriersInEngland,WalesandNorthernIreland,allcavitybarriersshouldbeconstructedtoprovideatleast30minutesfireresistanceand15minutesinsulation.InScotlandlargecavitybarriers,whicharedefinedasbeinggreaterthan1mx1minsize,mustprovidethesame.

Adoublelayerof50mmRocksilkSmokeandFireBarriertherebysatisfiesthecriterialaiddownintheBuildingRegulationsforonehourcavitybarriers.

Thesetestsincorporatedverticalandhorizontaljointsbetweenbarriers.Fireresistanceiseffectivefromeithersideofthebarrier.Whentested,thewiresidewasexposedtothefurnaceasthisisthesidemostvulnerabletofire.

Atpartitionsorwallheads,ifasecurefixingisavailable,asatsoffits,RocksilkSmokeandFireBarriershouldbeclampedwithasteelstrip

Twolayersof50mmRocksilkSmokeandFireBarrierwitha50mmairspacebetweenthemareneededforonehourfireresistance.Ingeneraltwoseparatelayersshouldbeinstalledbacktoback,eachinamanneridenticaltothatshownforhalfhourfireresistance.ThejointsinthetwolayersshouldbestaggeredandRocksilkSmokeandFireBarrierreturnedoutwardatthetopandbottom.Thewirereinforcedsidesshouldbeplacedoutward,seeFigure7.

Concretedecks RocksilkSmokeandFireBarrierisclampedbetweenthedeckandsteelanglesecuredbyexpandingbolts.Ifthedeckiscoffereditshouldusuallybepossibletolocatethecavitybarrieralongoneoftheribs(Figure3).Iffittedacrossthecofferingitshouldbeclampedbysteelstrip,tothesteelanglewhichissecuredtotheribs.

Ifthedepthofcofferingislessthan100mm,RocksilkSmokeandFireBarriershouldbereturnedatthetopby300mm,toallowforcuttingattheribsandpushedsecurelyintothecoffering(Figure4).Ifthedepthofcofferingisgreaterthan100mm,RocksilkSmokeandFireBarriershouldbefixedaroundthecofferingusingsteelangle,asdescribedabove.Alternatively,proprietaryprofilefillersmaybeused.

Theperimeterofthebarriershouldbesecuredwithsteelstrip(Figure5).

InstallationThefollowinginformationandillustrationsoutlinetypicaldetailsfortheinstallationoflargecavitybarriers.Incaseofuncertainty,refertoKnaufInsulation.

Metal deck with overdeck insulation

IfRocksilkSmokeandFireBarrierrunswiththeslopeoftheroof,asupportingsteelangleshouldbefixedbetweenpurlinsandthesmokeandfirebarrierclampedtothiswithsteelstrip(Figure1).Theinsulationshouldproject80mmbeyondthestriptoensureagoodseal.

Iffittedacrossthesheetingprofile,RocksilkSmokeandFireBarriershouldbeboltedtothepurlins(Figure2).Itisreturnedatthetop,toalengthequivalentto3timestheprofiledepth,toallowforcuttingattroughsandpushingsecurelyintoprofiles.Alternatively,proprietaryprofilefillersmaybeused.

PerpendicularjointsThejunctionbetweentwobarriersshouldbesecurelywiredtogether(Figure15)withareturnofatleast80mm.

DropsAllbarrierscanbeusedfordropheightsupto5mwithoutadditionalsupport.Fordropsbetween5mand7mitisnecessarytointroduceadditionalsupportingmembersinordertosupporttheweightofthefirebarriers(Figure16).

ServicesServiceswhicharepermittedbyBuildingRegulationstopenetratebarriers,shouldbeprovidedwithcollarsofRocksilkSmokeandFireBarrieratleast300mmlong,sewntothemainbarrierandthenstrappedorwiredsoastoavoidanypossibilityofgaps(Figure17).

Penetrating steelwork ThisshouldbeprovidedwithacollarofRocksilkSmokeandFireBarrieratleast300mmlong(Figure18).Thecollarisfixedtotheconcreteormetaldeckbyclampingagainstthesesurfacesbehindsteelangle.ThevoidsinthesteelworkarefilledwithRocksilkSmokeandFireBarrier(figure18).Ahalfhourbarrierrequiresacollarononesideofthebarrier.Aonehourbarrierrequiresonecollaronbothofthelayersofthebarriersystem.

AccessWherepermanentaccessisneededthroughthebarrier,afiredoorandframe,ratedtotheappropriatefireresistance,mustbeused.RocksilkSmokeandFireBarriershouldbefixedsecurelytotheframe.

HandlingDependingonthesizeofthebarrierandtheworkingspaceavailable,itissometimesdifficulttoholdthematerialinplacewhiletopfixingsarebeingsecured.Itwillbefoundhelpfultomakeatemporarypropfrom,e.g.slottedangle.ThismaycompriseacrosspieceoflengthappropriatetothewidthoftheRocksilkSmokeandFireBarrier,withstudsonthetopwhichwillhookintothewiremeshoftheRocksilkSmokeandFireBarrier.Thismaybeswivelledonthetopofahandle,andsecuredhorizontallyortotheangleoftheroofbyanadjustablebrace.ItisusedtoholdtheRocksilkSmokeandFireBarrierup,100mmorsobehindthefixinglocation,whilefixingisbeingcarriedout.Whenfixingtoaslopingdeck,thetopoftheRocksilkSmokeandFireBarriershouldbetrimmedtothecorrectangletoensurethatjointsaretrulyvertical(Figure19).

Following tradesTheintegrityofbarriersmustberestoredifdisturbedbyfollowingtrades,eitherduringthebuildingprocessoraftercompletion.Thisinstructionshouldbeincorporatedintothebuildinghandbook.

Vertical ductsTheinstallationdetailonthepreviouspagesforhorizontalductsisalsorelevantforverticalductwork,thoughthehorizontalandverticalsurfacesreferredtoforhorizontalductworkwillbethelongestandshortestsurfacesrespectivelyinverticalductwork.

Ductwork passing through compartmentwalls or floorsInaccordancewithTheBuildingRegulations,whenductworkpassesthroughanyelementofconstructionwhichhasadesignatedperiodoffireresistance,theintegrityofthatcompartmentshouldbemaintained.Inthesesituations,theductworkintheimmediatevicinityofthepenetrationshouldbestiffenedasfollows:

a) When the flange is within 100mm of the penetration then a50 x 50 x 3mm steel angle should be rivetted to the top edgeof the duct using a single row of rivets with washers starting50mm from the edge and at 150mm centres.

Earthwool Building Slab RS33 should be used to pack any gapbetween the main insulation and the blockwork.

120 x 90mm sections of Rocksilk Pyroduct Slab is glued to the wall and main Pyroduct insulation.

b) When the flange is greater than 100mm from the penetration,two angles should be used, fixed as described in a) above, and45mm Rocksilk Pyroduct Slab installed perpendicular to the duct at the penetration.
