This is the first time that Clarencehas beaten Orchard Park since the2000 season.

“This is one of the biggest winsthat we have had in the last fewyears,” Goddard said. “The kids

have really been focused on ourtheme this year. We are a goodteam but... can we play at the nextlevel? Can we possibly be a greatteam?”

The Red Devils rolled up 456yards of offense in the win overOrchard Park.

“Orchard Park is a measuringstick program in AA football,”Goddard said. “The kids proved thatwe could play at a higher level forone week. Now we have to prove itagain against Lancaster this week.We have to prove it every week.”

Goddard said he was pleasedwith the offensive output but thatthere were things that needed to beimproved.

“We look at our game film onMonday,” he said. “We point out thepositives and the things we need towork on. From that point on, wehave put this win aside and moveon. Itʼs enjoyable but itʼs over.”

This is the fourth time that

Goddard has been honored with theaward by the Bills.

“Itʼs great because itʼs for thekids, too,” he said. “Itʼs a great honorto be chosen but itʼs a reflection ofthe kids and how they played. Itʼs aprogram award because it took a lotmore than one person to win thatfootball game.”

Goddard played running back, tight end and linebacker forClarence before graduating in 1968.

He also played wide receiver forIowa Wesleyan College.

“Back then they had MajorCollege Football and Small Collegefootball,” he said. “Iowa Wesleyan isan NAIA school now.”

He started coaching at Clarenceas an assistant on the staff in 1986and became the head coach in1993.

Keeon Colvin returned a punt 70yards for a touchdown to helpAmherst beat hamburg 34-29 lastweekend. Colvin also rushed for 172yards and 3 TDs on 19 carries in theTigers win.

Jamestown evened itsʼ record at 1-1 after beatingLancaster 12-0 last weekend. After losing their opener toFrontier, the Red Raiders are now in the thick of a fierceplayoff battle in the AA South Division.

“Every year, the AA South is a fight from beginning toend,” Jamestown coach Tom Langworthy said. “Itʼs thetoughest league in all of New York State. We are used tothis type of schedule and weexpect it every year.”

It was Jamestownʼs firstwin over Lancaster since the2005 season.

“We havenʼt beaten themin Lancaster in ten years,”Langworthy said. “Ourdefense is playing well.Weʼre running the football. We feel like we can let thekids go out and play andthey have reacted well to it.”

Senior tailback JoeyCampion led the offense ashe rushed for 82 tough yardson 21 carries. Campionground out several firstdowns late in the gamewhen the Raiders were try-ing to drain the clock.

“Joey did a great job ofholding the football,”Langworthy said. “He madea couple of crucial firstdowns when we were tryingto work the clock.”

Campion played such abig role in the gamebecause Jamestownʼsstarter, Dylan Monroe, satout the contest with a high ankle sprain.

“Dylan got a high ankle sprain during camp,”Langworthy said. “His recovery will take a little longerthan we had hoped. We just have to give it a little moretime.”

Campion provided Jamestown with a dose of energy inthe win.

“Heʼs a high-energy player and a student of the game,”Langworthy said. “He brings 100 percent effort to everypractice and every work out. The kids look to him andrespect him.”

Campion starts at outside linebacker and starred forthe Jamestown defense in 2009.

“Joey is an all-around great kid,” Langworthy said.“Heʼs a well-rounded person. A great character kid and agreat player too. Heʼs a tremendous asset to have in theprogram. He leads by his mouth and by example.”

Campion had an ankle injury of his own to contendwith and, in the days leading up to the game, didnʼt knowif he would be able to play.

“I didnʼt know if I would be ready or not,” Campion

said. “Right before the game, my ankle was fine so Ihopped in and tried to do the best job I could.”

Campion was thrilled to get a road win in a divisionalgame.

“It was definitely an exciting win for us,” he said. “Wewere disappointed with the loss to Frontier. We felt wecould have played better. We were confidant that if we

played well, we could comeout with a win. We just keptfighting through the wholenight.”

Campion, who also playsbasketball for Jamestown, isfar more than just an athlete.

He ranks number-1 in hisclass academically and hasa chance to graduate as thevaledictorian of his class.

He is also a member ofthe National Honor Societyand is taking 4 AdvancedPlacement classes this year, after taking 5 AP as a junior.

Campion says he is notfocused on graduating asvaledictorian of his class.

“If I get it, that would begreat,” he said, “but I justwant to do my schoolwork tothe best of my ability andsee what happens.”

Campionʼs parents areboth doctors but, he saidthat he does not want toenter the medical field.

“My mom is a pediatri-cian,” he said, “my dad is agastroenterologist and does

some really gross stuff. That kind of steered me awayfrom being a doctor.”

Campion says he would love to continue playing foot-ball in college, but acknowledges that his size (5-8, 175)may work against him.

“I am looking to choose schools for academics,” hesaid. “I want to major in Mechanical or AeronauticalEngineering. I would love to play football or basketball incollege but the first priority is academics.”

Campion also says that people are surprised whenthey learn that a football player might also beJamestownʼs valedictorian.

“I guess Iʼm breaking the stereotype of football play-ers,” Campion said. “But we have other good students onthe team. My parents have stressed academics constant-ly. As a result, Iʼm a better student than an athlete.”

As far as the football season, Campion is very clear onhis goals.

“We want to make it to Ralph,” he said. “It wonʼt beeasy but we are looking forward to the challenge.”

Valley 55-16 last weekend. TheHillbillies jumped out to a huge 34-8lead at the half, allowing coach BobBall to sub liberally.

“We subbed with four minutesleft in 3rd quarter,” Ball said. “The2nd team played a lot. We gotsome juniors on the field and got alot of kids alot of snaps.”

Afteropening theseason witha 33-0 winoverSalamanca,Fredonia isnow 2-0 andin the thick ofthe C SouthDivision race.

“The kidsare feelingpretty goodright now,”Ball said.“They put a lot of effort into devel-oping a new offense. But theseniors understand that nothing willbe given to us. Weʼre not overlycocky but each week we getstronger as a group.”

Fredonia will play their first homegame on Friday when they hostGowanda.

Ballʼs new offense has scored 88points in Fredoniaʼs two games.

“Weʼre running a spread offenseand getting our speed into the openfield,” Ball said. “We wanted to runthis offense last year.”

But when Shane Smith suffereda season-ending knee injury threedays before August practice start-ed, Ball had to scrap his plans forthe spread.

“We played two quarterbacks,”

Ball said. “One had not playedquarterback since the 8th gradeand one had never played. Theygave us their best effort but westruggled on offense.”

Smith started at flanker and out-side linebacker as a sophomorewhen Fredonia went to RalphWilson Stadium two years ago.

“Shanehasnʼt playedQB since hisfreshmanyear,” Ballsaid. “Weknew what hewas capableof but he hadnot had gameexperiencesince hisfreshman yearon the JVteam.”

So far,Smith hasdone a solid

job of running the spread offenseand leads the team with 196 yardsrushing

“Heʼs a quick runner and itʼs hardto get a solid hit on him,” Ball said.“He spins and bounces off of peo-ple. He keeps his feet moving.”

Smith has also passed for 303yards.

“He is extremely accurate,” Ballsaid. “You donʼt see him throw abad pass. He has quick releaseand if he sees someone open, hegets it there in a hurry.”

Smith, who had knee surgerylast October, is a team captain.

“Shane is a self-motivated kid,”Ball said. “He was always like thatbut I think playing means a lot moreto him after having to sit out lastyear. He wonʼt take it for granted.”

Kling and His CourtBy Mark Adair

Depew sweated out atough 12-6 win overBurgard in a defensiveslugfest and improved to2-0 on the season.

The game was physi-cal, with plenty of hardhits delivered. Neitherteam seemed interestedin much trickery.

Just straight ahead,smash-mouth football.

After playing to ascoreless tie after threequarters, Depew surren-dered the gameʼs first TDand trailed 6-0 with 11:00left in the game.

The Wildcats respond-ed by mounting a pair ofscoring drives, first tyingthe game and then takingthe lead when AaronErtel tossed TD passesto Sam Sallaj andAnthony Emmanuele.

Depew is now 2-0heading into this weekʼsgame with Akron. TheWildcats will also faceSouth Park before head-ing into one of WNYʼsmost anticipated gamesof the year when theyhost defending Class Bchampion Cheektowaga.

“Weʼve got to take them one at a time,” Depew coachDan McGrath said, “but we want to win them all. Thatʼs agoal of ours every year.”

Depew, which last won a Section 6 title in 2007, iswidely considered a legitimate contender for the Class Btitle.

The reason is simple: The Wildcats have one of thebiggest offensive lines for a Class B school in memory.

“We do have some size this year,” Depew coach DanMcGrath said. “We have some pretty big kids up front.”

The biggest of the behemoths is 2-way tackle JohnKling, a 6-7, 285-pound senior who has already given averbal commitment to play for the University at Buffalo

next season.While Kling may be

the highest-profileamong the linemen, healso is the “rookie” of thebunch. He transferred toDepew after playingthree seasons at St.Maryʼs.

“John was one ofours to begin with,”McGrath said. “Heplayed modified ball forus in 7th and 8th grade. When he transferredhere, he was cominghome where hebelonged.”

McGrath was pleas-antly surprised whenKling enrolled in Depewlast December.

“He was definitely anice addition to theteam,” McGrath said.“He came out forwrestling in November. We were busy doing lift-ing and he jumped rightinto that. He knew a lotof our kids from elemen-tary school and he quick-ly re-established relation-ships with those kids.”

Unfortunately, Depewwill now be without Kling

for the next four weeks after he suffered a broken foot inthe win over Burgard.

“He broke it on the play before Burgard scored theirtouchdown,” McGrath said. “He played another play buthad to come out.”

Kling was immediately seen by an orthopaedic doctorwho helps with the team as a volunteer.

“By 11:30 that night,” McGrath said, “Dr. Szarzanowiczhad already seen him and had him in a boot.”

Depew also lost Josh Wiechelt (6-1, 240) from theoffensive line after he was banged up on a kickoff. It is

unknown how much time Wiechelt will miss.“We had to make some pretty big adjustments,”

McGrath said, “but the kids who came in played verywell.”

Amazingly, despite the loss of Kling and Wiechelt,Depew is still huge.

Andrew Burgio (6-1, 287) is starting at left guard whilesenior Mike Kasprzak (6-5, 250) moved down the line totake Klingʼs spot at left tackle. Jaden Cotton (6-4, 292) isstarting at right tackle.

“Yeah, were still pretty big,” McGrath said, “but ouroverall average certainly went down when those two guysgot injured.”

Zack Krieb, a junior, was inserted into the line at cen-ter. At 5-11, Krieb is relatively small but he still weighs280. Chris Twaragowski, the smallest lineman on theteam at 5-11, 170, is now starting at right guard.

“I never want to see anyone get injured,” McGrath said,“especially offensive linemen. But it created an opportunityto shuffle some other guys around and give them achance to show what they can do.”

McGrath says that he is confidant that his new linecombination, although different, will be no less effectivethan it has been in the first two games.

“These guys are excellent pass blockers,” McGrathsaid. “Against Burgard, we got out of our toe-to-toe offen-sive run game for a while and spread it out a little. Wewanted to see what our skill kids could do with space. Atthe end, we went to Ertelʼs arm. Weʼll have to makeadjustments because our team that starts the third gamewonʼt be close to the team that started the season.

Kling, who maintains an academic average of 91, is anoutstanding player. Before the injury, he started on offenseand defense and is also the Wildcats long snapper.

He was also the first player in WNY to commit to aDivision I scholarship program when he accepted UBʼsscholarship offer in June.

“I really wanted to be at UB,” Kling said. “Why hold outfor anything else? Thatʼs where I wanted to go.”

A day later, UB got a verbal commitment fromWilliamsville South quarterback Joe Licata.

“I talked to Joe Licata,” Kling said. “Heʼs really excitedlike I am. We both like the coaches and weʼre both lookingforward to playing for them next year.”

Kling says that he is confidant that the Wildcats will beable to play deep into November this season.

“We have some really big guys on the line,” Kling said.“We have three guys that are over 6-4. We take a lot ofpride in our line. I know the kids in there will play well.”

Despite being the newest linemen at Depew, he hasplayed in Ralph Wilson Stadium more than any otherplayer on the roster. Kling played at ʻThe Ralph ̓threetimes for St. Maryʼs in the Msgr. Martin Association cham-pionship.

“Iʼm looking for big things this year,” Kling said. “Iʼmlooking to go to the Ralph again. I think we can do it.”

It’s not the critic who counts.

Not the man who points out wherethe strong man stumbled or wherethe doer of deeds could have donethem better.

The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood;

who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again...

...who at best knows,in the end, the triumphof high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly,

so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat.

Are You Game?

Upstate Football Weekly 45

Clarence beat Orchard Park 37-28 in a thrilling game lastweekend. It was the first time that Clarence has beatenOrchard Park since 2000.

Since that last victory over the Quakers, Clarence hassuffered a string of futility at the hands of Orchard Park.

“They beat us in the playoffs in 2002,” Goddard said, “andthey beat us in 2006 at TheRalph. Theyʼve had our num-ber for a decade.”

Included in this string wasthe 2008 game in which bothteams entered the gameundefeated... and OP cameaway with a 48-0 win.

“That was humbling,”Goddard said.

But, last weekendʼs winover Orchard Park will be oneof the most memorable winsin Clarence football history.

Bruising tailback MikeGelz ran for 177 yards and 3TDs to lead the Red Devils.

“Mike is a workout fanatic,”Goddard said. “He put on 20pounds of muscle over theoffseason.”

Clarence led 22-21 at the half.“When we got into the locker room I told the kids that I

had just one question,” Goddard said. “ʻCan we play withthese guys?ʼ And the kids just exploded.”

What followed was a hard-nosed, 8-minute drive for a TDthat gave Clarence a 9-point lead. When the game ended, the student section swarmed the field in celebration.

But while all of this made for an exciting Friday night, none of of it made the game memorable.

What made the game an ʻInstant Classicʼ was the factthat Clarence wore yellow jerseys... with no numbers ornames on them.

Fans walking into the game, knowing that Clarence usual-ly wore Red and Black, were immediately confused.

“We were on the field warming up with our regular blackjerseys,” Goddard said. “Orchard Park got off the bus withdark maroon jerseys. I didnʼt think anything of it. Someteams change into game jerseys right before the kickoff. Butthen they took the field in maroon jerseys. I knew there wasa problem.”

The problems started because Orchard Park has a hugeJV program. The Baby Quakers have so many players that

the school does not have enough jerseys.“Iʼm not going to tell a kid he canʼt play because we donʼt

have enough jerseys,” Athletic Director Jim Higgins said. “Iordered more jerseys but they arenʼt in yet. So until theycome in, we have to share the jerseys between the varsityand the JV.”

Higgins called Clarence Athletic Director Greg Kaszubskito ask if the teams could switch jerseys. Orchard Park wouldwear white for the JV game... but that meant that the whitejerseys wouldnʼt be ready in time for the varsity game.

On the sidelines of the varsity game, Kaszubski con-firmed the conversation.

“I thought they just wanted to switch for the JV game,”Kaszubski said. “I didnʼt know they wanted to switch for thevarsity game, too.”

So... before the varsity game kicked off, both teams stoodthere in almost identical jer-seys wondering what to do.

Officials then informedGoddard that the rules statethat if the visitors show up inthe wrong jersey, it is theresponsibility of the hometeam to change.

Wow... who knew?“I didnʼt even know the

rule existed,” Goddard said.“Ignorance of the law is nodefense but Iʼve never evenheard the rule mentioned inalmost 30 years of coachingfootball.”

The problem was that theClarence players, certain thatthey would be wearing blackthat night, had all taken theirwhite jerseys home. The only

jerseys available were yellow practice jerseys. No numbers... no names. Just bright yellow mesh.“We bought those jerseys because we needed something

to practice in,” Goddard said. “Fortunately we had them. They werenʼt clean but we took our jerseys off and put thoseon. The kids were ticked. But then, someone said we lookedlike Killer Bees. All of a sudden, it clicked and just torethrough the locker room. Everyone was fired up and wantedto wear the yellow jerseys. We were all on the same page.We were together.”

The offensive linemen had tape pasted to the front of theirhelmets so that referees could tell if there was an illegal mandownfield. Stat keepers faced a nightmare prospect of tryingto keep accurate stats with no numbers to identify players.

And the PA Announcer would occasionally inform thecrowd that the pass was complete to, “A yellow jersey!”

And... maybe... a new tradition has been started?“I wouldnʼt mind that,” Goddard said. “When Orchard Park

comes to our place, we could wear yellow. Notre Damewears green for USC. Maybe the boosters could buy ussome regular yellow football jerseys. And when we playOrchard Park at home, weʼll call it Yellow Jersey Night.”
