Curt Fischer Honored for Big WinMaple Grove-Chautauqua Lake Curt Fischer was
named the Buffalo Bills/National Guard Coach of theWeek after his Thunder Dragons beat Randolph 24-12in the season opener.
Randolph had entered the game with a 23-gamewinning streak and was the two-time defending NewYork State Class D champions.
“We really looked at it as a great challenge to openthe season with Randolph,” Fischer said. “They werethe champs and had a winning streak like that. It wasa tremendous challenge.”
Randolph hadbeaten MGCLakethe last 2 years at‘The Ralph’ in theClass D champi-onship game.
But when NYSre-worked theirenrollment num-bers for the 2014season, theThunder Dragonswere moved up toClass C.
“It meant thatwe would be play-ing some differentschools this year,”Fischer said. “Itwas a new start.Sometimeschange gets yougoing again.”
But, whileMGCLake andRandolph wereno longer Divisional rivals, the importance of the gamedid not change.
“Being moved up to Class C didn’t change any-thing,” Fischer said. “It was still a huge game. BeatingRandolph means so much to our kids. Neither teamwants to lose that game.”
At first, it was not clear tha MGCLake would evenget a chance to play Randolph.
“That’s just how the schedule came out,” Fischersaid. “Actually, I think it’s an unwritten rule that weneed to play every year. It’s a good game for the area. We’ve each made each other’s programs strongerover the years.”
The Thunder Dragons led just 8-6 at the half.“We moved the ball early and the defense played
well,” Fischer said. Dustin Graziano and Jed Micek tackled Randolph
QB Bryce Morrison in the end zone for a safety and a2-0 lead.
When the Dragons got the ball back, they drove 65yards for a TD. AJ Hulton capped the drive when hepunched into the end zone from 1 yard out.
Randolph pulled within 8-6 when the Cardinalsintercepted a screen pass and returned it 39 yards fora TD.
Shortly after that, the game was suspended due tolightning.
“I was worried,”Fischer said. “Wehad kids thatwere super high. They had confi-dence but thenwe had to call thegame. But thekids came backthe next day andplayed well.”
MGCLakescored twice inthe third quarterto take a com-manding 24-6lead.
“We startedrunning the balland getting to theedge,” Fischersaid. “The lineand the backsstarted blockingextremely well.”
Ryan Miller powered the MGCLake offense as herushed 26 times for 206 yards and a TD. He alsoadded 111 yards in returns.
Fischer has coached at Maple Grove for 22 years.Since he took the head job in 1993, his teams havewon two NYS titles and 7 Section 6 titles.
He played high school football at Falconer underlegendary coach Bill Race. Race later hired Fischer asa coach on his football staff.
“Played for him and coached under him,” Fischersaid. “Coach Race was a huge mentor in my life.”
Fischer works full time at Cummins Engines inLakewood. He also coaches basketball and girls soft-ball at maple Grove and has coached baseball in thepast.

Bennett used a number of big plays to race pastWilliamsville East 54-6 in the season-opening game.
“I knew we had some kids that had big play ability but Ididn't know we had that many,” coach Steve McDuffie said.“We probably have 10 to 15 kids that have big-play ability.”
McDuffie’s Tigers simply flattened their opponent, whohappens to be coached by his brother, Chris.
“I feel terrible about beating my own brother like that,”McDuffie said. “I gave my brother a hug and kiss after thegame. I love my brother and I didn’t want to embarrass his
team. But we wereable to play our 2ndand 3rd team for thewhole 4th quarter.”
Bennett led 24-0at the half when thegame was sus-pended due to light-ning. The teamshad to return thefollowing night tofinish the game.
“I was worriedabout that,”McDuffie said. “Mybrother is a goodcoach and he had alot of time to makeadjustments. I hadto go home andwatch film.”
Bennett scored20 points in the thirdquarter to take acommanding lead.
“It was a competitive game until late in the third quarter,”McDuffie said. “We started to get big plays.”
One player who will play a big role for Bennett this sea-son is Bennett senior Alexander Lofton.
“He is so special because is a game-breaker in everyphase of the game,” McDuffie said. “On offense, defense andspecial teams, he can score every time he has the ball.”
Lofton caught 4 passes for 69 yards in the win overWilliamsville East.
“He had two kickoff returns for 80 yards each,” McDuffiesaid, “and both of them were called back by penalty.”
Lofton, who has an academic average of 90, was nameda team captain.
“He has enough credits to graduate right now,” McDuffiesaid. “He is one of five seniors on the team and he is agreat leader and a great student-athlete.”
Lofton also starts for the Bennett basketball team.“He mentors the Little Loop players in the summer,”
McDuffie said. “He’s a role model on the team, in schooland in the community.”

By Mark AdairWilliamsville South overcame an early 14-point deficit and a
suspension of play to come back and beat Kenmore West 24-21
last weekend.
“We over came some adversity,” Williamsville South coach
Kraig Kurzanski said. “We didn’t play well early but we fought
hard over both nights and were
able to catch them in the end.”
Ben Neuss kicked a 32-yard
FG as time expired for the win-
ning points.
“I was confident when we
sent him in there,” Kurzanski
said. “He’s a good kicker.”
The Billies trailed 21-7 with
4:51 left in the first quarter.
“I thought our kids were a
little tight,” Kurzanski said.
“We made some mistakes early
on and Kenmore West took full
advantage of them.”
South began to settle in dur-
ing the second quarter. The
Billies scored with 5 minutes
left in the first half to pull with-
in 21-14.
With 2:15 left in the second
quarter, the game was halted as
lightning began to flash.
“We were just starting to
roll,” Kurzanski said. “We got
everyone to the locker room to
wait for the 30 minutes so we
could start playing again. But,
after a little while, it was obvi-
ous it was going to be a lot
longer than 30 minutes so the
officials called it off.”
At first, Kurzanski was dis-
mayed that the game had been
halted - just as his team had began to get on a roll.
“But, there wasn’t anything we could do about it,” he said.
“Normally we make some adjustments at halftime but this time
we had a 22-hour halftime to make adjustments. We went home
and watched some film of the game. It’s not very often we get a
chance to watch film at halftime.”
First, however, Kurzanski had his team’s trainer talk with his
players.
“We had them stretching in the gym,” he said. “The trainer
talked with them about getting enough sleep, about what the
could eat on Saturday morning, about proper hydration. It was
really hot Friday night and we were worried about kids getting
dehydrated and cramping up the next day.”
Kurzanski also wondered about his players losing focus but it
turned out that he didn’t have to worry.
“They came back excited and ready to play,” he said. “It was
a hard-hitting game and the energy level was just as high on
Saturday as it was on Friday. It was for both teams. Ultimately,
our kids were ready to play and did really well.”
Kurzanski also said that the referees in Western New York
should come in for some kudos.
“The officials should get a lot of credit,” he said. “Some of
those guys ended up having to work three games on Saturday.
The only reason we got all the
games in was because they were
willing to help out with the situ-
ation. All the refs should get a
ton of credit.”
If Williamsville South is
going to contend for the Class A
championship this fall, they will
need a big season from lunior
lineman Jake Fuzak.
“Jake never played JV foot-
ball,” Kurzanski said. “He went
right from modified to the varsi-
ty. He’s the first freshman ever
to play for me. We thought he
was good enough to play.”
Kurzanski did talk with
Fuzak’s aprents before officially
placing him on the varsity roster.
“We communicated with the
parents what our goals were for
Jake,” Kurzanski said. “He was
14 years old, playing against 18
year old kids. I was more wor-
ried about the social aspect of it
rather than the physical aspect.
Whenever you bring a kid up
like that, he’s not with his own
friends. We didn’t want him to
have a miserable experience.”
Fuzak (6-5, 278) started at
linebacker as a freshman.
“He started out a linebacker,”
Kurzanski said, “but he kept
growing so now he’s on our lines.”
Fuzak, who also plays hockey for Williamsville South, is
more athletic than most kids his size.
“He runs a 40-yard dash in under 5 seconds,” Kurzanski said,
“which is fantastic for a high school kid his size. He also went
to U.S. Football National Development Game and was one of 90
kids in the nation to play in that game and he had three sacks.”
The University at Buffalo has already offered Fuzak a foot-
ball scholarship.
“He’ll have more coming,” Kurzanski said. “He’s an excel-
lent student. He has a 93 academic average so he won’t have
any problems there.”
Fuzak was also named a team captain before the season.
“He’s very outgoing and he’s mature beyond his years,”
Kuzanski said. “He cares about others more than himself. He is
a great football player and a great leader. The first time you
meet him, you are impressed.”

Williamsville South junior Jake Fuzak has started forthe Billies since he was a freshman. Fuzak hasalready been offered a scholarship by the UB Bulls.

Kenmore West lost to Williamsville
South 24-21 last week when the Billies
kicked a 27-yard field goal as time
expired.
“It was a great game,” Kenmore West
coach Rich Harris
said. “Either team
could have won.”
The game was
played over two
days. With
Kenmore West
leading 21-14 and
just over 2 minutes
to play in the first
half, the game was
halted due to light-
ning.
“You could see
it off in the dis-
tance,” Harris said.
“We needed to get
the fans, cheerlead-
ers and players off
the field and inside.
They called it off
about 9:15.”
Harris said that
despite the “split”
game, his players did not seemed affected.
“The kids came in the morning and we
had a quick film session,” he said. “When
we got back to the field, we did play better.
Unfortunately, we didn’t score any points.”
Harris said the unusual circumstances
were difficult to deal with.
“It was like playing 2 games, especial-
ly if you were traveling like we were,” he
said.
The Blue Devils have a very young
roster this season.
“We graduated
our whole offensive
line,” he said, “We
are very young and
that led to us mak-
ing mistakes and not
finishing drives.”
If the Blue
Devils are going to
compete for the AA
North title, they will
be relying on senior
WR Trent White.
“He played some
as a freshman,”
Harris said. “We
were thin at the skill
positions that year.
He started for us as
a sophomore.”
White (6-3, 190)
also starts at CB.
“He’s big and
he’s fast,” harris
said. “He threw a sweep pass for a TD on
the first play of the game. He also caught
a fade pass for another touchdown.”
White is a team captain.
“I need him to pull the team together
right now,” Harris said. “He’s a quiet kid
and leads by example.”

After jumping out to a 14-0 lead,
Jamestown fell behind 21-14 in the 4th
quarter but rallied for a 35-28 win over
Sweet Home in the season opener.
“We lost our rhythm offensively,”
coach Tom
Langworthy said.
“We got in a little
rut and turned the
ball over.”
Sweet Home
took the lead when
Jamestown lost a
fumble in the end
zone, resulting in a
Panthers TD.
“Turnovers are a
huge part of the
game,” Langworthy
said. “We want to
make sure that we
protect the football.”
The Raiders
actually coughed
up 5 turnovers.
“The good news
is that we threw 5
TD passes,”
Langworthy said.
“We made a lot of mistakes yesterday.
Luckily, they were all correctable. This is
the first week and it’s not unusual to
make a ton of mistakes in the first game
of the season.
Langworthy was proud that the
Raiders gave Sweet Home its first home
loss since 2006.
“Playing against teams like Sweet
Home will pay dividends down the road,”
he said. “I’m pretty prioud that we could
go into Sweet Home and come out with a
win. Not many
teams do.”
If the Red
Raiders are going to
repeat as class AA
champions this fall,
they will need a big
year from senior
DE Kevin Mosely.
“He’s an intelli-
gent player and he
has a nose for the
ball,” Langworthy
said. “He’ll get to
the ball carrier and
make plays.”
Mosely started
the 2013 season at
LB before moving
to the DE spot.
“He was giving
our offensive line
fits in practice,”
Langworthy said.
“We moved him to defensive end and he
had a big game at The Ralph.”
Mosely led the team in tackles in 2013.
“We look for him to make plays
against the run and the pass,” Langworthy
said. “He can dip his shoulder and get the
the quarterback.”

After stopping
Kenmore East on 4
plays, Starpoint
took over. On the

“I thought we

“He’s not exactly hot huge,”
Cavagnaro said. “He’s 5-10 and 165

smart, very football saavy and strong.”
Chase is in his third season as a starter
at WR and CB.
“When we are
on defense, we

Cavagnaro said.
“He watches so
much film that he

In last week’s
win, Chase caught
3 passes for 55

37-yard TD pass.
Chase is a team

Spartans.
“He is a hard

said. “For three

Chase also has an academic average in
the mid-90s.
“He’s always positive and willing to

said. “He never says anything bad about
anyone and is very positive kid.

West Seneca East won a thriller over
Iroquois 12-7 last weekend. The Trojans
were leading 6-0 at the half when the
game was suspended by lightning.
“It was pretty strange to be leaving at
halftime,” coach
Jim Maurino said.
“That is something
that you can’t pre-
pare for. You never
expect it to happen
and it probably
won’t happen again
for a long time.”
Maurino said
that the lightning
storm did provide
an unusual oppor-
tunity.
“It was a chance
to watch some film
and game plan at
halftime,” he said.
Maurino also
worried that his
players would lose
their edge when
they returned the
following day.
“I thought the kids handled it pretty
well,” he said. “I thought both teams did.
It was an intense game on Friday night
and it carried over that way to Saturday.”
The Trojans earned a divisional win
when Iroquois’ last pass to the end zone
on the final play of the game was ruled
incomplete.
“It’s huge to get a division win,”
Maurino said. “To have a bunch of new
guys come together and go through that
and still come out with a win really helps
us out.”
If the Trojans
are going to con-
tend for the A
South Division title,
they will need a big
season from senior
Tyler Skretny.
“He’s tough,”
Maurino said, “and
he has an absolutely
crazy motor. He
just does not stop
playing hard.”
Skretny, a team
captain, will play
WR, RB, LB and
also serves as East’s
long snapper.
“He does not
come off the field
much,” Maurino
said. “He never
asks to come out.
He will go 100 percent on every play.”
In the win over Iroquois, Skretny
made 10 tackles and caused a fumble. He
is also an outstanding student.
“It helps to have your middle line-
backer be a top ten student,” Maurino said.
“He remembers everything out there.”

capitalized on our
mistakes.”
After failing to
score in the first
two quarters, the
Purple Eagles
regrouped.
“We just made
some adjustments,”
Parisi said. “The
coaching staff did a
great job. We got
the kids to settle
down a little bit
and we just came
out and played.”
QB Kyle Smith
hit Trey Hart with
scoring passes of
31 and 26 yards to
pull Albion within
26-12 entering the
final quarter. Smith connected with Austin
Loyd on a 33-yard scoring toss. When he
tossed the 2-point PAT to Hart, the eagles
were back in the game, trailing by six
points.
On each of the scoring plays, the
Albion wide receiver was wide open.
“We saw something in the secondary
that we wanted to exploit,” Parisi said.
“and the kids did a great job of execut-
ing.”
If Albion is going to rebound from the
opening loss and
make the Class B
playoffs, they will
need a big year
from Hart, who
caught the first two
TD passes.
“He has very
good football
sense,” parisi said.
“He practices hard,
plays hard and stud-
ies the game.”
Hart (5-11, 170)
also starts at LB.
“He’s very
strong,” Parisi said.
“He only weighs
170 but it’s all mus-
cle.”
Hart, who has
started on the varsi-
ty since he was a
freshman, has also
started in CF for the Albion baseball team
since his freshman year.
“He is a great athlete,” parisi said.
“Not too many kids have played 4-years
of varsity in two sports. He’s very funny
and a happy kid. He goes through the day
with smile on his face.”

Amherst beat East Aurora 15-7 last
week despite the fact that they did not
score an offensive TD.
Sophomore kicker Blake Haubeil
kicked 3 FGs, including a school-record
49-yarder to pro-
vide the bulk of the
scoring. The Tigers
score their lone TD
when Howard
Williams returned
an interception 21
yards for the score.
“Defense and
special teams was
the story of the
game,” coach Jason
Beckman said. “We
moved the ball but
we couldn’t finish
the drives. We had
2 touchdowns
called back on
penalties. We had a
couple of other dri-
ves that we ended
up not converting
on 3rd down.”
The Tigers
defense was solid as they forced 6
turnovers.
“To get 6 turnovers and keep them in
check most of the night, I thought we did
a great job,” Beckman said. “We put them
into situations where they had to throw
and then executed on defense.”
If Amherst is going to contend for the
B Central Division title this season, the
Tigers will be relying on senior Bryon
Fowler, a 3-year starter on the lines.
“We didn’t name season captains,”
Beckman said, “but
he was the game
captain based on his
off-season work
ethic and his leader-
ship.”
Fowler starts at
LT on offense and
can create havoc at
his DE spot.
“He had some
outstanding blocks
against East
Aurora,” Beckman
said. “He is so ath-
letic and he runs so
well that we
thought about mov-
ing him to tight
end.”
Fowler (6-4,
235) was second on
the Tigers with 62
tackles in 2013. He
also had 3 QB sacks.
“He’s football smart,” Beckman said.
“He’s a hard worker and has great hands.”
Fowler also plays basketball and
lacrosse for Amherst.
“He’s a good student,” Beckman said.
“The other kids all follow his example.”

East Aurora suffered a tough 15-7 loss
to Amherst in the season opener. The Blue
Devils defense did not surrender a TD in
the loss.
“That was very frustrating,” coach Tim
Wade said. “I am
absolutely pleased
with the defense.
The defense played
very well.”
Wade says that
much of the sput-
tering on offense is
normal early in the
season.
“The defense is
always ahead of
the offense,” Wade
said. “We had a lot
of first-year players
and it takes a while
to gel a bit. We just
have to clean up
some mistakes.”
East Aurora
trailed 15-0 when
the game was sus-
pended with just
under 8 minutes to
play due to lightning. The Devils returned
on Saturday to finish the game.
“I told them when we got back that the
plan was to score on the first play,” Wade
said, “and we did.”
Connor Hayes hit Clay Lewis with a
30-yard TD pass to pull the Devils within
within 15-7 but the Devils could not score
again.
“The kids knew when we walked away
that we have to come to play like that
every week,” Wade said.
East Aurora will
get a big boost from
Lewis, a senior
playing his first
year of football.
“He’s a fantastic
soccer player at
Holland,” Wade
said. “He’s been
playing varsity
since the 8th grade.
He just decided to
play football this
year.”
Lewis is one of
the area’s best bas-
ketball players.
“Clay is a very
gifted athlete,”
Wade said. “He
earned a starting
position in camp.
The first time in
pads he got the ball,
ran over a kid and went 80 yards.”
Lewis (5-11, 180) has been timed at
4.6 in the 40-yard dash.
“He’s fast and strong,” Wade said.
“and he’s athletic. He can dunk a basket-
ball. He just out-jumped everybody when
he caught the touchdown pass.”

Silver Creek opened the season with a
28-0 win over Allegany-Limestone,
despite missing star RB Sherman
Williams, who was not cleared medically
in time to play.
“I really
enjoyed that
game,” coach Sean
Helmer said. “Our
defense played out-
standing. Those
kids just played a
great game.”
Helmer says he
was pleased that
other players
stepped up in
Williams absence.
“It means the
kids bought into
what we were ask-
ing them to do,”
Helmer said. “Our
depth showed. We
had a bunch of
guys come in and
relieve starters early
in the game and
they played well.”
The game was suspended at the half due
to lightning with the Knights leading 14-0.
“I was absolutely worried about hav-
ing to come back a second day,” Helmer
said. “We’re dealing with kids. It usually
it takes a couple of days to recover from a
game but we had to come back and play
the next day. We talked to them about get-
ting the right amount of sleep, what to
drink. But our kids were pretty focused.”
If Silver Creek is going to contend for
the C North title, they will need a big year
from senior captain
Dylan Robinson.
“He’s an out-
standing center and
that’s the heart of
the offensive line,”
Helmer said. “He
understands defen-
sive schemes better
than any lineman I
have been around.”
Robinson (6-2,
220) was a first-
team all-star at OL
in 2013.
“He’s big but
he’s very athletic,”
Helmer said. “He
could be a tight
end. He under-
stands what the
defense is trying to
do and that’s a huge
advantage in high
school.”
Robinson, a Forestville student, was
voted a team captain by his teammates.
“The kids like him but they also
respect him,” Helmer said. “He communi-
cates well in the trenches and that’s
incredibly important.”

Southwestern fired up the offense and
scored 4 times in the second half to beat
Gowanda 36-21 in the season opener.
The game was halted at the half with
the Trojans clinging to a 14-13 lead. The
teams returned to
the field on
Saturday night to
finish the game.
“The time off
was good for us,”
coach Jay Sirianni
said. “Not only
could we make
adjustments, but
our players were
very nervous on
Friday night. On
Saturday, it seemed
like they were more
at ease and less up-
tight.”
The Trojans led
21-13 after the third
quarter and pulled
away in the final
frame.
“We were able
to move the ball on
offense more efficiently on Saturday,”
Sirianni said. “Our defense also made
stops the second night.”
QB Noah Weinstein completed 7 of 13
passes for 132 yards in the win. He tossed
TD passes of 20 and 31 yards t Mike
Pannes.
“This is only Noah's third year of foot-
ball,” Sirianni said. “He was a hockey
player as a kid and decided to try football
when he was a sophomore.”
Weinstein also scored a TD when he
snuck in from a
yard out.
“He is such a
good athlete,”
Sirianni said. “He
played varsity foot-
ball as a sophomore
and it was just his
first year of foot-
ball.”
Weinstein started
at WR that season.
“He played
receiver and defen-
sive back but started
playing quarterback
during the end of
the year,” Sirianni
said.
Weinstein is an
outstanding student.
“He’s a member
of the National
Honor Society,”
Sirianni said, “He takes several AP classes.”
Weinstein also plays baseball at
Southwestern.
“Noah is an all-league catcher for the
baseball team,” Sirianni said. “He is also
going to play basketball this year for the
first time.”

Catt-Little Valley overcame a 26-7
deficit, an emotional evening and a sus-
pended game to beat Westfield 27-26.
“It was a pretty weird evening,” Catt-
LV coach Tim Miller said. “I don’t think
I’ve ever had a
game like that.”
The T-wolves
trailed 19-7 when
the game was sus-
pended due to
lightning.”
“As poorly as
we started, we
were still moving
the ball,” Miller
said. “We had
turnovers and
penalties that
stopped two drives
inside their 10.”
When the game
resumed on
Saturday, Westfield
kicked off to start
the 2nd half. As the
CLV returner was
fighting for extra
yardage, the ball
was stripped and returned for a TD and
CLV trailed 26-7.
“Our kids weren’t down,” Miller said.
“They still hadn’t stopped us.”
The Timberwolves began a methodical
comeback and pulled to within 26-20 in
the 4th quarter. They scored the tying TD
with less than 2 minutes to play. Jenna
Martin kicked the game winning PAT.
“Once we eliminated the mistakes, we
played pretty well,” Miller said.
If Cattaraugus is going to contend for
the Class D title
this season, they
will be relying on a
solid year from QB
Kyle O’Donnell.
“Kyle is a bat-
tler,” Miller said.
“He’s just a hard
working kid who
has a football mind.”
O’Donnell
rushed 13 times for
56 yards and a TD.
“He’s not the
fastest kid or the
strongest in the
weight room,”
Miller said, “but
he’s the hardest
working and he just
never gives up.”
O’Donnell, a
junior, started at QB
as a sophomore.
“He had to go through some growing
pains,” Miller said, “but that experience is
invaluable to us now.”
O’Donnell is an outstanding student.
“He’s not a star,” Miller said, “but he
fits well with our team. He works hard
and answers the bell every time.”

Cardinal O’Hara opened the season
with a 28-6 win over Nichols last week.
The Hawks led 14-0 at the half despite
being dominated in Time of Possession.
“Nichols kept the football away from
us,” coach Angelo
Sciandra said.
“They run the dou-
ble-wing and do a
great job with it.”
The Hawks
recovered a fumble
to set up one TD.
They scored again
on a long pass play
in the second quar-
ter.
“We had 2 big
plays but we made
the most of it,”
Sciandra said. “We
had a goal-line
stand that turned
out to be huge.”
Sciandra says
that his team will
rely on the leader-
ship of a veteran
line this season.
“Our skill kids are all younger,”
Sciandra said. “Our linemen are all
seniors. Overall, I was pretty pleased with
what we did because that’s a pretty good
Nichols team.”
Sciandra says he is enjoying the early
part of the season.
“We have good kids with good atti-
tudes,’ he said. “These guys are pretty
focused and there isn’t a lot of nonsense
to deal with.”
They Hawks will be relying on a solid
season from senior
captain Mike
Spagna this fall.
“He’s been play-
ing on the varsity
for 4 years now,”
Sciandra said.
“He’s been a cap-
tain for 2 years.”
Spagna starts at
both G and DT.
“He does a lot of
trapping for us,’
Sciandra said.
“He’s quick so we
do a lot of pulling
with him.”
Spagna (5-10,
215) is one of the
stronger players on
the team.
“He benches
over 300 pounds,”
Sciandra said.
Spagna is an outstanding student and
maintains an academic average in the 90s.
“He’s a great leader,” Sciandra said.
“He’s a tremendous, high-character kid.
He’s one of the school leaders involved
with Student Government and works with
some charity stuff. He’s just a great kid.”

CTF’s vision is to develop the hearts of coaches andathletes to be men of character for others.
The 2014 season is in high gear. What a great first week.Cross Training Football is honored to be walking through
the season with you. We want to encourage, equip andempower you to be an Athlete of Character.
Teddy Roosevelt said, “Character, in the long run, is thedecisive factor in the life of an individual and of nationsalike.”
I believe this to be true for any team as well.
This year’s Theme is: BE RELENTLESS. The first two weeks we have talked about BELIEVE. All
things are possible for those who believe. If you believesomething is true then you need to take action. Just Believeand go for it.
The second word we talked about was ENVISION. Wedefined envision as a clear, powerful picture worth pursu-ing. What is your vision for the team? Write it down make itplain even for others. Then run with it, work it out.
This week’s word is RESPONSIBLE: Commitment even ifit requires unexpected sacrifice. If you can be trusted with alittle, you can then be trusted with much. If you are dishonesta little, you will be dishonest with much. Athletes... Knowwhat’s right and do what’s right, even if it means sacrifice.
Athletes who are RESPONSIBLE can and will be trusted.Strap it up and get after it … have a great week!
Remember: Love never fails and love also covers team-mate’s mistakes.

Big Time In BuffaloBy Mark Adair
Canisius opened theseason with a big 48-3win over McQuaid lastweekend. The Crusadersled 28-3 at the half andscored two more TDsearly in the third quarterto put the game out ofreach.
“It was nice,” coachRich Robbins said. “Inthe 4th quarter we wereable to give everybodyan opportunity to play.”
Robbins said that giv-ing his younger playersin-game experience willbe crucial in the comingweeks.
“With our schedule,we don’t get too manychances to get the youngguys in and get qualitytime,” he said. “It wasnice for them, after work-ing so hard in practiceand on the scout team, toget them some qualityplaying time.”
Despite the lopsidedscore, Robbins said thatthe Crusaders beat agood team.
“McQuaid was rankedin the Top Ten in theRochester Democrat &Chronicle,” he said. “I think they have a good team andwill have a good season. But our kids were ready to play.We jumped on them early and did not look back.”
Canisius did not play a perfect game, Robbins said.“We had some penalties,” he said. “We had some
screw-ups with substitutions, some offsides. We hadsome kids forget to go out for an extra point. That’s just‘details stuff’ that is normal for the first game. It wasn’teven that much of an issue but we want to clean it up.”
The Crusaders started fast as Josh Huffman returnedthe opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown.
“There is not a better way to start the season thanthat,” Robbins said. “That was a statement right there.”
Canisius led 7-0 after one quarter and exploded for 3
TDs in the second frameto take a 28-3 lead atthe half.
QB Jakob Louckscompleted 11 of 16passes for 166 yardsand 2 TDs to lead theoffense. Canisius alsorushed for 164 yards asnine different playerscarried the ball.
“We did pretty muchwhat we wanted to do,”Robbins said. “The kidsplayed really well.”
Now Canisius willplay the most anticipatedgame of the seasonwhen Aquinas comes toBuffalo.
The Little Irish areranked #1 in New YorkState while Canisius isranked #3. Last season,Aquinas beat Canisius3-0 in a monsoon-likerainstorm that hamperedboth offenses.
“I’m sure our kidsremember it in the backof their minds,” Robbinssaid. “But this year’steam is not last year’steam. Aquinas has anew team, too. I justknow it’s going to be a
great football game.”Both Aquinas and Canisius will have players in the
game that are among the most heavily-recruited highschool players in the nation.
Aquinas QB Jake Zembiec (6-3, 205) is ranked in thetop five of all high school quarterbacks across the coun-try. He is also ranked as one of the top 10 Dropback QBsin the nation.
“No doubt that kid is something special,” Robbins said.“But we think we have some pretty special kids on oursideline, too.”
Canisius has TJ Wheatley, the son of former Michiganstar Tyrone Wheatley, who is now on Doug Marrone’s
Canisius senior TJ Wheatley is one of the top high school recruitsin the nation. He will lead the Crusaders against Aquinas thisSaturday. Aquinas is currently ranked 49th in the nation.

staff with the Buffalo Bills.“When Coach Wheatley got the job with the Bills, the
family started looking at a lot of different schools inWestern New York,” Robbins said. “When we got the callthat TJ would be coming to our school, we were excited. Not just because he is a great football player but becausethey are really good people, too. They are a great family tohave in our program.”
Wheatley, a 6-7, 260-pound senior, starts at DE and TEfor the Crusaders. He is also one of the biggest of the big-time recruits to ever play in Western New York.
“He has scholarship offers from LSU, Oregon, Alabama,Florida State, Michigan, USC and UCLA,” Robbins said.“The list goes on and on. The only two schools that wereabsolutely out for him were Ohio State and Michigan State.I think with his family situation, neither one of those twoschools were an option for him.”
Robbins has heard from almost every big-name collegecoach in the country, regarding Wheatley.
“I’m not going to lie,” Robbins said, “when Brady Hokeor Brian Kelly calls it’s great to talk with them. You can geta little start struck. But I love talking with Mike Cragg atHobart and Paul Vosburgh at St. John Fisher, too. Theyare great guys and great coaches. And, honestly, we’llhave a lot more guys play at those schools than Michigan.”
Robbins says that despite the fact that Wheatley isgoing to play at a big-time football school, you would neverknow it when talking to him.
“The nice thing about TJ is that even though he is a big-time recruit, his main focus is helping us win games,”Robbins said. “He is a humble kid.”
He has never, once, ‘big-timed’ anyone, Robbins says.“Yes, he’s a big-time recruit,” the coach said, “but he
just came in here, worked hard and did what we asked himto do. He’s been a great kid to have in the program.Mostly, he’s excited about getting a chance to win a statechampionship this year.”
Yes... a state championship. In 2013, Zembiec led Aquinas to the New York State
Class AA championship. The Little Irish, in fact, claimedthe state title by winning a tournament that Canisius is notallowed to play in.
However... this season, for the first time, the Msgr.Martin champion will have an opportunity to play for a NYSCatholic Championship.
The Msgr. Martin Association has entered into an agree-ment with the NYC-based CHSFL that will have the cham-pions of each league meet a week later to play for the NewYork State Catholic championship. Organizers are hopingto play that game in Yankee Stadium but the details havenot been finalized yet.
“It will be nice for both leagues to have their championget another game and maybe be able to call themselvesState Champs,” Robbins said. “Our whole team is excitedabout getting an opportunity to do that. We still have a lotof football to play before we get to that point but it’s beenour focus to get to that point.”

By Mark AdairNationally-ranked St. John Fisher College scored the
game's final 22 points to earn a 36-14 win over visitingOtterbein University in the Division III football season open-er for both teams.
Fisher, ranked No. 9in the D3football.compreseason poll, seniorquarterback Tyler Fenticompleted 22-of-33passes for 296 yardsand 4 TDs., Senior WRNathan Nigolian scored2 TDs and finished with8 catches for 148 yards.
“We need to get backand do some things a lit-tle bit better,” Fishercoach Paul Vosburghsaid. “We weren’t awaystechnically sound. Butwhen adversity struck, our guys stood up to itand responded.”
After forcingOtterbein to go three-and-out in the game'sopening drive, Fishermarched 54 yards onjust three plays for thegame’s first score.
“When we scored injust three plays, itlooked pretty easy,”Vosburgh said. “ButOtterbein is a prettygood program. Theyfought back and it wasn’t until the third quarter that wecould get the game in hand.”
St. John Fisher has been to the post-season for 11straight seasons, five times making the NCAA Playoffs.
“We are the winning-est team in the East in the last 11years,” Vosburgh said. “Nationally, we are in the top ten inwins over the last 11 years.”
Vosburgh says that staying on top will be difficult.“Our league is so tough,” he said. “This past weekend,
the Empire 8 went 8-0. Every team in our conference wona non-league game. That speaks well of our conference.”
with the recent additions of Buffalo State and Brockport, along with next year’s additions of Cortland State andMorrisville State, the conference has been measurablystrengthened.”
“It’s tough every year now,” Vosburgh said. “There is noeasy weekend. You better be ready to play or you will lose.”
Fisher has an open date on the schedule this weekbefore playing the annual Courage Bowl game withBrockport State.
“It’s a conference game for both of us now,” Vosburghsaid. “It’s exciting. I think the fact we have the Stateschools coming into our league is good for college footballand good for New York State. Fans don’t have to go veryfar to see great football.”
If the Cardinals aregoing to repeat asEmpire 8 champions, they will be relying heavi-ly on senior safety PaulLeavell, an Orchard Parkgrad.
“Paul is the third of hisbrothers to play for us,”Vosburgh said. “Mike andJoe were both solid play-ers for our program.”
Vosburgh recruitedLeavell heavily as he wasfinishing his high schoolcareer at Orchard Park.
“You could see that hewas an outstanding foot-ball player and a verygood overall athlete.”
Leavell did not imme-diately break into theFisher lineup. In fact, thisis the first year as a full-time starter.
“When we recruit kids,we tell them that it’s noteasy to start here, espe-cially as a freshman,”Vosburgh said. “Paulworked his way up. Lastyear, he was behind a
senior who was also in his first year as a starter. Paul did agreat job on special teams.”
Leavell will have full responsibility to make sure theCardinals defense is in the proper formation on every play.
“As our free safety, he is the quarterback of thedefense,” Vosburgh said. “He sets our defense and gets uslined up in the proper alignment. He has to see the offen-sive formations and then make the call to get us in the rightspots. If he makes the wrong call, he misdirects the wholedefense.”
Leavell was in on 7 tackles, 4 solo, in the win overOtterbein.
“He is playing very well right now,” Vosburgh said. “He’sa competitor and he is doing a great job.”
Leavell is also solid in the class room. “He’s a very good student,” Vosburgh said. “He has
great grades and does a great job with his academics. Hedid in high school. He’s a little quiet but he does run theshow out on the field. We hoping that he progresses intobeing an All-Conference performer this season.”

Buffalo State opened the season witha wild 51-48 overtime win over CortlandState last weekend.
“I have been coaching for a whilenow and have never had a finish likethat,” Buff State coach Jerry Boyes said.“We were up thecreek, we didn’thave an oar andthe current wasagainst us.”
With just :06left, the Bengalstrailed 48-45 andCortland had theball on Buff State’s48-yard line, facinga 4th down. TheRed Dragons sentthe punting unit onto the field.
“We just senteveryone after thepunter,” Boyessaid. “We thoughthe was just goingto run around andtry to kill the clock.”
Instead, withmost of theBengals defensechasing him, the Cortland punter did ahook slide with :01 still on the clock.
“They lost 20 yards on the play,”Boyes said. “That gave us the ball at the32-yard line. It gave us a chance for one
more play.”Boyes sent in the field goal unit and
St. Joe’s grad Marc Montana nailed aschool-record 49-yard FG to send thegame into OT.
“I knew Marc had the leg,” Boyessaid. “He alsodoes the kickoffsfor us.”
In the OT ses-sion, Buff Stateintercepted aCortland passbefore Montanatrotted onto thefield again. Henailed a 34-yarderto win the game.
“Sometimesyou are good andsometimes youare lucky,” Boyessaid. “I think wegot a little lucky.”
Montana fin-ished 3-for-4 onFGs and was 6-for-6 on PATs. Hetransferred toBuffalo Statebefore this season.
“He wanted to go somewhere that hecould make a difference,” Boyes said.“Thank goodness that Buffalo State is inhis hometown because he sure made adifference already.”

Well... THAT was certainly interesting. When teams kicked off the 2014 season last Friday, lit-
tle did anyone know that this was going to turn into oneof the most memorable Opening Nights to a football sea-son in WNY history.
Things started normally, when East Aurora andAmherst started their game at 6pm. Most games beganat 7:00 pm without a hint of trouble.
By 7:45, a lightning storm had move into the area forc-ing teams to get off the field. Many began the 30-minutewaiting period but it quicklybecame clear that this stormwas much bigger than initiallyforecast.
Ironically, earlier that day,Section 6 Chairman KenStoldt thought there might bea small problem.
“I saw the weather reportand it didn’t look good,” hesaid. “I sent an email out to allthe Athletic Directors to beprepared if their game had tobe postponed or suspended. We had to keep in mindthat, if we had some suspensions, that there needs to bea minimum of four days rest between games. I thoughtwe might have 2 or 3 games in that situation.”
While Stoldt was in attendance at the Depew at Aldengame, lightning flashed, and the game was stopped.
“I got 2 or 3 calls that games were being suspended,”he said, “and then my phone just blew up. I knew thatthis wasn’t good.”
It was obvious, from all the red on the radar reports, that this storm was far bigger than initially forecast.Lightning strikes were everywhere an the storm stretchedfrom Rochester to the middle of Michigan.
“I was not expecting to have 19 games suspended,”Stoldt said. “I went home. Thankfully, I live a block away.”
When he arrived at his house a few minutes later, there were more than 30 phone messages, emails andtexts waiting for him.
“I knew it was going to be a long night,” Stoldt said. “I juststarted calling people. I had my cell phone going, my homephone going, I was getting texts... I felt like a bookie.”
Finishing the games on Saturday wasn’t the problem.“We knew we could play the next day,” Stoldt said,
“but everyone wanted to play at 2 o’clock. That just was-n’t possible. We didn’t have enough officials to play everysingle game at 2 o’clock.”
Stoldt then got on the phone with Dan Finucane, whoschedules the officials for Western New York. He alsohad to consult with Al Feser, who does the same job forofficials in the Southern Tier.
“We were all awake until after one in the morning,”Stoldt said. “We had to make sure that some of the offi-cials could get from one game to the games that weresuspended. Dan and Al really came through for us. Theydid an amazing job.”
All the games that were suspended Friday night, would have to replayed no earlier than 6pm Saturday. And, still, it wasn’t as simple as re-scheduling the footballgames.
“Some of the fields had soccer games scheduled for7pm Saturday night,” Stoldt said. “So we had to workaround other sports, too.”
It was obvious that some ofthe area’s referees were goingto put some serious miles ontheir cars on Saturday.
“Honestly, the officials as agroup really came through bigtime,” Stoldt said. “We hadsome guys that had to ref a2pm game in Newfane, thendrive to West Seneca East tofinish a suspended game, before going back home toLockport.”
Even the WNY coaches, notoriously uptight aboutstaying on schedule, were all on board with the plan.
“The coaches were all great about it,” Stoldt said. “Wehad a lot of people in the same boat. They understoodthis was bigger than we planned.”
Amazingly, every game was completed. The final con-test was finished Monday night when McKinley beat EastHigh at Riverside Field.
“I was just panic stricken that we had missed a game,”Stoldt said. “I just knew that we would have a gamescheduled and no referees show up. But, in the end, thatdidn’t happen. Every game got played and the officials allgot to their games. Everyone came through.”
Stoldt said he has thought about coming up with anemergency plan in case of a re-occurrence of somethingthis big.
“There is no way to really plan for this because youdon’t know how many schools will be affected,” he said.“Next time, it might be one or two games.”
All in all, it turned out as best that could be hoped for.It certainly was memorable.
“It was a great way to kick off the season,” he said.“We got through it and now we are on to Week 2.”

It’s not the critic who counts.
Not the man who points out wherethe strong man stumbled or wherethe doer of deeds could have donethem better.
The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood;
who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again...
...who at best knows,in the end, the triumphof high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly,
so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat.
