Section A Language Usageand Grammar

Unit 1 NounsA noun is a naming word. It is a type of word that gives a name to a person, place or thing.

Examples:Examples:bird, man, shoes and keys

There are two types of nouns:Common Nouns

It names any member of a group of persons, places or things.

Proper Nouns

It names a particular member of a common noun group.

Unit 2 Countable and Uncountable Nouns

Countable Nouns are nouns that can be counted.

Uncountable Nouns are nouns that cannot be counted.

Countable Nouns are usually used together with the following words:

A, an, few, many, several, plenty, some, a lot of and a large number of

Uncountable Nouns are usually used together with the following words:

A little, much, some, any, plenty of, a lot of, a great deal of and a large amount of

‘Some’ and ‘any’ can be used for either countable or uncountable nouns.

We use ‘some’ in positive sentences.

Examples:Examples:I have some friends.

We bought some coffee.

We use ‘some’ in questions when offering or requesting something that is there.

Examples:Examples:Would you like some bread? (offer)

Could I have some water?

We use ‘any’ in negative sentences and questions.

Examples:Examples:He does not have any friends in Malaysia.

Unit 3 Singular and Plural Nouns

Look at the picture on the left. There is only one book.

The picture on the right shows that there are many books.

To show that there is only one book, “book” is used.

To show that there is more than one book, “books” is used.

“Book” is a singular noun. A singular noun is used when there is only one object.

“Books” is a plural noun. A plural noun is used where there is more than one object.

There are many different ways to change nouns into plural nouns.

(a) By adding -s.

Ant – ants

Cat – cats

(b) By adding -es to nouns ending in -s, -sh, -ch, -x.

Box – boxes

Fish – fishes

(c) By adding -es to nouns ending in -o.

Mosquito – mosquitoes

Tomato – tomatoes

(d) By adding -s to some nouns ending in -o, -y and -f.

Kangaroo – kangaroos

Toy – toys

Cuff – cuffs

(e) By changing -y into -ies.

Baby – babies

Fly – flies

(f) By changing -f or -fe into -ves.

Elf – elves

Knife – knives

(g) Some nouns change their forms.

Man – men

Child – children
