Thanks to two snowstorms in seven days, the game was Lancaster’s fourth Northern Neck District game of the season. And the season is almost over. The Conference #43 tournament, which includes the Northern Neck teams and Rappahannock County, begins on Feb- ruary 18. Lancaster needs to squeeze three make-up games into their schedule before then. After getting off to a slow start, Lan-caster opened up a one-point halftime lead in the third and went on to beat Colonial Beach, 65-56, in a varsity boys basketball game last Friday.

Thanks to two snowstorms in seven days, the game was Lancaster’s fourth Northern Neck District game of the season. And the season is almost over. The Conference #43 tournament, which includes the Northern Neck teams and Rappahannock County, begins on Feb-ruary 18.

Lancaster needs to squeeze three make-up games into their schedule before then.

Last Friday’s meeting was the second between the Drifters and the Devils. Lancaster won the first, its district opener, by three points. The varsity Devils are now 2-2 in the district and 6-7 overall.

After four minutes of play, the contest was tied at 2-2. The Devils rallied with a 10-4 run in the final four minutes of the first quarter and were up 14-7 in the second when they allowed the Drifters to get back into the game with seven unanswered points to lock the contest at 14-14. Colonial Beach took a short-lived lead, 16-14, before the two teams traded shots for a 22-21 Lancaster lead at the half.

The Devils outscored the visitors 25-28 in the third and held on through an even fourth quarter for the win.

Trevon Taylor had the big game for the Devils, scoring 26 points to lead three double-digit scorers. He did most of his work in the second half when he score 22 points.

After unprecedented interest by competitors in the 2014, $20,000 to win Fastrak World Championship to be held at Virginia Motor Speedway (VMS) on October 2-4, a new three-year contract has been signed.

The Relay For Life of Lancaster/Northumberland recently launched the 2014 season at the Holiday Inn Express in Kilmarnock.

“Things are off to a great start this year,” said Lisa Good-all of the American Cancer Society.

Belle Isle State Park is recruit-ing for an AmeriCorps member to be part of the team that designs and presents environmental edu-cation programs to the public and to work with volunteers. The position begins in April and continues through the end of Sep-tember.

The 2014 Virginia Motor Speedway season will open April 12 with the Aaron’s King of the Commonwealth event and the first-ever appearance of the National Dirt Racing League (NDRL). BRIDGE RESULTS

Mike Alakszay, a veteran fighter and airline pilot who also flew Russian jet fighters to evalu-ate them in the Cold War, will talk to the Tappahannock-Essex Pilots Association on Febru-ary 18. He is now with the FAA Flight Standards District Office in Richmond as an aviation safety inspector specializing in avionics. He has a total of around 15,000 hours in his logbook.

The old Chinese proverb “A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step” is a guiding principle for Chesa-peake Academy kindergarten teacher Kenzie Manetz of Wic-omico Church. She knows the first steps taken by students in her classroom are crucial to their future academic success.

“My primary task is to help students become comfort-able with learning. I try to take advantage of their natural inclination to play games and explore by making school fun. When students are engaged, they often learn without realiz-ing it,” said Manetz, a reading specialist.

“We also work a lot on social skills. Children enter kinder-garten at different levels of maturity, so it’s important that they learn how to get along, work co-operatively and behave in an academic setting,” she explained.

Heavy emphasis also is placed on developing reading, writing and math skills.

“Learning to read and write is like learning to play a sport,” Manetz said.

Children must be develop-mentally ready so they will have the necessary motor skills and mental acuity to master these important skills. They require constant practice and reinforce-ment, both in the classroom and at home, she said.

“Children come to kinder-garten with different skills. Some know the alphabet and how to count. Some can read.

I assess each one at the begin-ning of the year so I can take advantage of the learning styles most appropriate for each child.”

Small-group work and one-on-one learning sessions, a hallmark of the Chesapeake Academy curriculum in all grades, allow Manetz to moni-tor students’ progress through-out the year.

Kindergartners at Chesa-peake Academy also receive instruction from specialists in Spanish, art, music and physi-cal education. While they are playing, exploring and enjoy-ing their new-found mastery of letters and numbers, they are also developing higher-order skills.

“We introduce them to inde-pendent thinking, teaching them how to analyze a situ-ation and make appropriate choices. We help them learn to use technology and the library

to introduce them to research,” said Manetz. “They may not understand the pedagogy involved, but we know it is important for them to develop these skills as well.”

Her class also spends time with the first grade at Chesa-peake Academy. First-grade teacher Molly Vanderpool of White Stone said this interac-tion eases their transition to first grade.

“In first grade we place greater emphasis on inde-pendent learning,” she said. “Students are given even more freedom to use class materials, books, supplies and learning aids on their own—respect-fully and responsibly. These habits are established begin-ning in pre-K 3 & 4 and kin-dergarten.”

Vanderpool also stresses the importance of students’ becoming proficient in math and reading at an early age.

“We know that in the early grades they must learn to read, because beyond those grades they will be reading to learn,” she said.

The opportunity to partici-pate in activities with Vander-pool’s class makes kinder-gartners more likely to adapt to the stricter requirements for academic performance in higher grades, she said. They also interact regularly with older students in school-wide activities, making them less intimidated in larger groups of mixed-aged children.

Manetz looks upon the approach of spring with mixed feelings. She sees how far her students have advanced, but the thought of seeing them head off on the next leg of their educational journey also makes her a bit sad.

“They grow so much in kin-dergarten, it’s hard to let them go,” said Manetz.

Rappahannock Community College recently announced a Technology Petting Zoo will be held February 7 at the Warsaw Campus lecture hall and Feb-ruary 14 at the Glenns Campus lecture hall. Each free session will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m.

The Petting Zoos repre-sent an innovative program from the Library of Virginia, which gives a variety of new technology tools to selected local libraries around the state in exchange for their help in offering demonstrations to staff and the public.

Northern Neck 4-H pro-grams are now recruiting teen leaders for 2014 4-H camp. Teen leaders must be age 14 and be available to serve for the camping week, June 23 to 27.

The Northern Neck Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society recently gave a first edition of Helen Hamilton and Gustavus Hall’s illustrated Wildflowers & Grasses of Virginia’s Coastal Plain to the Lancaster Commu-nity Library in Kilmarnock.

“The plants are arranged by flower color, with grasses and grass-like plants in the final section,” said chapter president Ted Munns. “Each plant has a photo chosen to highlight its most prominent feature. The text that goes with each photo is a remarkably easy-to-read description of the its appear-

ance, range, bloom time and growing conditions. There are also interesting comments like whether the plant is used medic-inally or for food by people and other animals.”

The book covers species that are native to Virginia’s coastal plain and conspicuous, intro-duced plants which are displac-ing Virginia’s native plants in many locations. Its publication was sponsored by the John Clayton Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society.

The copy presented to the library was signed by the authors and by the editor, Louise Menges.

The February 13 deadline is rapidly approaching for the annual Virginia State Bar Law in Society Essay competition.

All Virginia students ages 19 or younger and enrolled in grades 9 through 12 or a homeschool equivalent are eligible to submit an essay based on a hypotheti-cal situation, which is posted at http://www.vsb.org/site/public/law-in-society-hypothetical, reported Gordon Hickey.

The first-place winner will receive $2,300 and their win-ning essay will be published on the Virginia State Bar’s website, reported Gordon Hickey. Other awards include $1,850 for second place, $1,350 for third and $250 for honorable mentions. All win-ners also receive a plaque and a copy of Strunk and White’s Ele-ments of Style.

Co-sponsored by the bar’s litigation section and the com-munications committee, the essay competition asks students to consider a situation where an 18-year-old student is filmed drinking alcohol at a party. An older student films the scene, emails it to the younger student’s

school principal, and posts the film and pictures to social media websites. The student is then sus-pended from school based on the information seen on the websites.

Does a school have the right to suspend a student based on information from other students’ social media postings? Does a student have the right to sue a person for secretly filming and posting activities that lead to the student’s suspension?

Essays are limited to 1,000 words and will be judged on how well they demonstrate the student’s understanding of the role and value of the legal system in everyday life. Entries will be judged by attorneys, judges and educators. The purpose of the competition is to awaken an interest in the law and apprecia-tion of the U.S. Constitution.

The Virginia State Bar is a state agency that protects the public by educating and assisting lawyers to practice ethically and competently, and by disciplining those who violate the Supreme Court’s Rules of Professional Conduct, all at no cost to Vir-ginia taxpayers.

Deadline nears for Law inSociety essay competition

On December 14, hundreds of band students from schools throughout the region, including the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, auditioned to be a part of the District XV All-Dis-trict Bands.

Zach Benton, a freshman trombone player at Lancaster High School, was selected to be a part of this event, reported band director Kenny Flester. At 11 a.m. January 31, Benton and the rest of the members met at Riverbend High School, and in a day-and-a-half prepared five pieces of music and performed them Saturday afternoon. The guest director was Denny Stokes of Fairfax.

Thirty-two trombones audi-tioned for these bands, and Benton made fifth chair in the concert band.

“This is quite an honor, par-ticularly for a freshman,” said Flester. “You’re going up against a lot of upperclassmen, many of whom take private lessons at local colleges. It’s been awhile since Lancaster has had a fresh-man make districts, and we’re

very proud.”“I really liked the music a lot,”

said Benton. “There was a lot of variety, and it was a lot of fun to play.”

The concert was a huge suc-cess, with the bands playing very challenging music, sounding as if they had been rehearsing for two months, rather than two days. “It has definitely made me a better player,” said Benton.

At James Madison Univer-sity, students fulfill a “Be the Change” motto through involve-ment and leadership every day.

With more than 350 active organizations at JMU, it can be overwhelming for new students to find their niche. That is why Student Activities and Involve-ment created Make Your Mark on Madison, according to social media coordinator Paula Pol-gase.

Neil Carter, a freshman unde-clared major from Kilmarnock, was among some 120 students selected to participate in a semes-ter-long leadership program in the fall that was tailored to help freshmen and sophomores tap

into their interests and seek ave-nues of leadership, said Polgase.

The program provides stu-dent applicants with insight into values, diversity and effective communication necessary for positive involvement and close interaction with upperclassmen, she said.

The program meets weekly. The students are divided into small groups led by a trained upperclass “counselor.” During the first hour a guest speaker presents the topic of the week and incorporates interactive activi-ties. The second hour is devoted to their small group where the counselors facilitate group dis-cussion and answer questions.

“Martin Luther King Day means overcoming obstacles,” according to the Rev. Keith Parham, pastor of First Baptist Church of Hockley.

Rev. Parham was one of the guest speakers at Rappahan-nock Community College’s recent tribute to King.

Rev. Parham grew up in Petersburg at a time when Vir-ginia was segregated, and as a young adult, he was involved in the civil rights movement. When he was 16, the president of the Petersburg National Association for the Advance-ment of Colored People youth division invited him to a meeting which Dr. King also attended.

“I don’t remember a thing that he said,” Rev. Parham acknowledged.

However, quoting Maya Angelou’s observation, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel,” he named a few things he remembered about the occasion.

First, King was a humble man. “He didn’t make people feel small,” said Rev. Parham. “I remember thinking that I wanted to be like that. Not putting on airs—just being myself.”

King was a very serious

man. “He spoke with convic-tion, with passion—his words came from his gut,” said Rev. Parham. One of King’s well-known quotations, said Parham, sums up his attitude: “If you haven’t found some-thing worth dying for, you aren’t fit to be living.”

Even after King left the meeting, “I felt like he was still in the room,” said Rev. Parham. “He left me with pre-cious nuggets of wisdom that were blessings to me; thus, I was inspired to go out and col-lect nuggets of my own that I have tried to pass along. That was a gift he left for all of us, to go out and make a differ-ence by sharing your nuggets of wisdom. What nuggets are you going to leave with some-one?”

He also noted, “Dr. King was a ‘lifter,’ and so must we be. Every one of us can be a Dr. King.”

Cecil Taylor of Shiloh Bap-tist Church in Reedville pre-sented a 10-minute segment from the “I Have a Dream” speech (first heard on August 28, 1963).

Farmers across the country are applauding the U.S. House of Representatives’ passage of HR 2642, the five-year Agri-cultural Act of 2014.

The farm bill, which the House approved 251-166, now heads to the Senate, which is expected to vote on it soon.

The bill would eliminate direct payments to farmers in favor of enhanced crop insur-ance, revise commodity sup-ports, create a new dairy pro-gram and make some changes that include a cut of almost $8 billion to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. It still maintains critical food assistance to families in need. A large portion of spending is for nutritional assistance pro-grams.

“The American Farm Bureau Federation commends the House for its passage of the new five-year farm bill,” said president Bob Stallman. “We

are particularly pleased with provisions to provide risk man-agement to fruit and vegetable farmers and to support live-stock farmers during disasters.

“We now turn our attention to the Senate for timely pas-sage of the bill, which will provide farmers and ranch-ers certainty for the coming year and allow the agriculture department to begin planning for implementation.

Farm bill passes House, farmers pleasedsupply year in and year out.

“Farm bills are not only good for farmers, they are good for all Americans.”

The Agricultural Act of 2014 repeals direct payments and limits producers to risk management tools that offer protection when they suffer significant losses. The bill also repeals outdated and ineffec-tive dairy programs and offers producers a new voluntary protection program without imposing mandatory milk supply controls.

Additionally, it provides nearly $7 billion in funding for ranchers through livestock disaster programs, conserva-tion and research.

Recent U.S. Department of Agriculture data indicates that cattle herd inventories are nearly the lowest they have been in six decades. Disaster programs will provide relief for producers who were affected by drought and blizzards and help them to begin rebuilding their herds.

The farm bill provides retro-active payments for producers who suffered losses after the previous program expired early in October 2011. A new per-manent 10-year baseline is pro-vided for the livestock disaster programs. Those programs are estimated to provide nearly $4 billion in assistance to produc-ers over the next decade.

The bill also continues Animal Health and Disease Research Programs, includ-ing the authorization of a new competitive grant program that will enable USDA to better focus resources on animal sci-ence priorities such as improv-ing feed efficiency.

Additionally, it authorizes a Veterinary Services Grant program to award competitive grants to develop, implement and sustain veterinary services.

Commonwealth Assisted Living LLC of Charlottesville recently announced Gloucester House, an assisted living commu-nity in Gloucester, was awarded a fourth consecutive two-year license from the Virginia Depart-ment of Social Services.

To celebrate, president and chief executive officer Richard Brewer will reward Gloucester House employees with free gas fill-ups on Thursday, February 6, at 7-Eleven, 8343 George Wash-ington Highway, Gloucester. Brewer will pump the gas.

Free tax helpThe Volunteer Income Tax

Assistance Program will pro-vide free income tax preparation services at the Lancaster Com-munity Library from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays, Feb-ruary 19 through April 12.

Help is offered to those with annual income below $51,000 who have difficulty preparing their own tax returns. Trained vol-unteers will prepare basic returns. Taxpayers who have more com-plex returns should see a paid tax preparer.

Job CorpsThe Virginia Employment

Commission will host a Job Corp counselor at 10 a.m. February 12 at the VEC Workforce Center, 14243 Historyland Highway, Warsaw.

Job Corp’s mission is to inspire young adults to become produc-tive and empower them with skills to sustain employment. Those ages 16 to 24 are urged to come find out more about free job training opportunities.

Geraldine Bulson of Callao has been selected as the Rap-pahannock General Hospital’s Employee of the Month for Feb-ruary 2014.

Bulson is a licensed practical nurse (LPN) in the medical/sur-gical and telemetry departments.

She and her husband, William, have eight grown children, 22 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In her spare time, she enjoys knitting, crocheting, gardening, art, sewing and cake decorating.

Bulson said she “takes great pride in nursing and care given to patients and co-workers. It’s wonderful to see a smile on one’s face, even on a bad day. I’m a lucky person.”

Bay Banks of Virginia Inc., holding company for Bank of Lancaster and Bay Trust Com-pany, recently reported a 29.7% improvement in earnings of $341,000 for the quarter ended December 31, 2013, compared to $263,000 for the same quarter in 2012.

Earnings improved 91.0% to $1.3 million for the year 2013 compared to $698,000 for the year 2012.

“The best news for 2013 is that we have nearly doubled our earn-ings, which allowed us to main-tain earnings per share, even though the number of shares outstanding nearly doubled after our successful capital raise at the end of 2012,” said president and chief executive officer Randal R. Greene.

“Our fourth quarter results are highlighted by improved asset quality and corresponding provi-sion expense reduction,” contin-ued Greene. “The bank’s classi-fied assets declined $3.7 million and the provision expense went down $94,000 during the fourth quarter. We continue to work on prudent growth into con-tiguous markets. Mobile bank-ing remains on the horizon and we continue to analyze which growth opportunities will be significant to the long-term suc-cess of the bank. I am pleased to announce all of these positive results.”

This was due mainly to the mortgage servicing right cumu-lative recognition and gain on the sale of the Bay Trust Company building, both of which occurred in the third quarter of 2013, plus a $216,000 increase in commis-sions from Investment Advan-tage, and a $181,000 increase in service charges and fees on deposit accounts, said Greene.

Booth registration fees are $25 for a 10 x10-foot-space or $45 for a 10 x 20-foot-space. Fees increase $5 after March 10, said executive director Karen Hart. Non-profit groups may request a fee waiver for information booths.

All spaces are outdoors on the museum grounds and old court-house green, said Hart. Vendors must provide their own tents, tables, chairs and displays.

Oliver to practice law in ChicagoRachel Oliver of Richmond, is a 2010 graduate and honors

student of Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C. After receiving her bachelor’s in international relations, she

continued her education at Chicago-Kent College of Law in Chi-cago. She graduated with her J.D. in May 2013, and passed the July 2013 Bar Exam in Illinois.
