PREPARE AHEAD Print the World Map, Country Facts cards, and Countries and Cultural Foods images. Cut apart the cards. Display the printouts around the room, grouping them together by country. Optional: Set out the globe.

SET UP Tape the map to the wall. Tape the images of the countries and their cultural foods to the wall. Tape or staple Country Facts card to the corresponding countries on the map, letting the cards hang down. Optional: set out globe.

SMALL GROUP

RELATE Point out the images and facts you’ve displayed around the room. Invite the kids to explore different countries from around the world, learning about their cultures, weather, animal life, geography, food, and more. Remind the kids that a country’s “culture” includes its way of life, ideas, and traditions. After the kids have had some time to explore, discuss: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? If you could try one of the foods from any country, which one would you eat? Which country’s weather do you like the best? What’s the most interesting thing you learned today?

Talk about the political, religious, cultural, and geographical climates of the different places you’ve seen or any other places you want to share. Take a few minutes to brainstorm ways you can pray for God’s Spirit to unify His people in those countries; write these ideas on the whiteboard. Then spend a few moments praying together. Ask God’s Spirit to unify you with followers of Jesus around the world.

Children receive a blessing from their leaders and sometimes one another. A blessing may be prayer of commission, a portion of Scripture, or words to encourage and guide.

RELATE Have the children stand in a circle. Open a Bible and read 1 Corinthians 1:10:

I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.

Direct the kids to put one hand in the middle of the circle, piling their hands together, similar to a team cheer. Then speak the following blessing over the group.

May you experience the unity God’s Spirit brings. May you share God’s love with those who are different from you and invite others to be a part of God’s faith community.

• The people of Cambodia refer to themselves as Khmer rather than Cambodians.

• Most Cambodians don’t know when they were born. Instead, everyone celebrates another year of aging during the Asian New Year.

• Cambodians greet each other by pressing their palms together in front of their bodies and bowing. This is called a “sampeah,” with the younger or lower-ranked person normally initiating the gesture.

• Cambodia is slightly smaller than the state of Oklahoma.

• China invented ice cream, and Marco Polo is rumored to have taken the recipe (along with the recipe for noodles) back with him to Europe.

• The number one hobby in China is stamp collecting.

• China is the fourth-largest country in the world (after Russia, Canada, and the United States). One out of every five people in the world is Chinese.

• At 3,855,103 square miles, Canada is the second-largest country in the world (after Russia).

• Vikings settled the east coast of Canada approximately AD 1000.

• Ice hockey is Canada’s official national game. The modern game of ice hockey was developed in Canada, based on games that have been played since the tenth century.

• The famous board game chess was invented in India.

• The national fruit of India is the mango. The national bird is the peacock, which was once bred for food.

• India is the sixth-largest country in the world, the largest democracy, and one of the oldest civilizations.

• Japan is home to 10 percent of the world’s active volcanoes, and it has about three minor earthquakes every day of the world.

• In Japan, it is rude to blow your nose in public.

• The words for “rice” and “food” are the same in Japanese.

• Thailand was called Siam until 1949, when an official proclamation changed its name.

• The word “thai” in the Thai language means “freedom.” So “Thailand” means “land of freedom” or “land of the free.”

• Thailand is often called “the land of smiles” because of its polite, gentle, and hospitable people.

• In Swahili, the word “chai” means tea. So in English, when you order a chai tea, you are actually saying “tea tea.”

• Kenya means “white mountain.” It derives its name from Kirinyaga, the Kikuyu name of Mount Kenya. The Kikuyu tribe believes the mountain is God’s home.

• The national dish of Kenya is a cornmeal mush called “ugali.”
