1. JOB IDENTIFICATION
Job Title: Staff Nurse Band 5 Responsible to: Charge Nurse Department(s): Radiology Directorate: DATCC Operating Division: NHS Lothian Job Reference: RAD/19/45 No of Job Holders: 8 WTE 3 P/T Last Update : October 2016
2. JOB PURPOSE
As part of a multidisciplinary team the post holder will have responsibility for assessment of care needs, the development of programmes of care and/or the implementation and evaluation of these programmes ensuring the delivery of high quality care to patients. In the absence of the Nurse manager or deputy take charge of the clinical area to ensure effective operation of the department.
The post holder has responsibility and accountability for maintaining both clinical and staff governance, and may be required to work in any of the departments associated with the Directorate. The post holder will be expected to participate in On call out of hours, plus evening and weekend work
3. DIMENSIONS
The department performs around 273,000 examinations per year which include Vascular cases 1922 Ultrasound 21,000 Biopsies (CT & U/S) 560 Fluroscopy 3700 GA cases 50
The post holder will be involved in working in all of the above areas.
The post holder will be expected to perform as a scrub nurse assisting the radiologist by preparing specialist equipment and handling and receiving it throughout procedures whilst anticipating the requirements of the operator.
Section 3: Job Description
The circulating nurse monitors the patient’s condition, administers required IV medication including IV sedation and provides reassurance to the patient throughout the procedure.
She is also responsible for providing the scrub nurse with necessary sterile and specialist equipment. All nursing staff need to have a good knowledge of the specialist equipment available.
Plan lists according to clinical requirements and liase with other members of the multidisciplinary team and associated wards.
Perform combined surgical cases in the radiology department and in the theatre suite alongside the surgical theatre team.
Supervision of CA’s and student nurses.
The post holder needs to be aware of the resources available and the need to remain within the financial envelope.

The post holder may be required to work within any of the Lothian Acute Services pertaining to their field and specialty. (The acute areas include: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Western General Hospital, St John’s Hospital).

5. ROLE OF DEPARTMENT
Directorate of clinical radiology provides a 24hr radiological service. Nursing staff participate in an out of hours on-call commitment to Lothian Hospitals and other referrers. Reports of these examinations are provided to referring Clinicians. These reports assist the referrer in providing an accurate diagnosis of the patients’ condition in order to decide on an effective course of treatment.
Interventional Radiology is carried out to assist in the treatment of patient conditions. To provide a high quality, safe and supportive environment in order to care for patients within Imaging, meeting the identified physical and psycho-social needs.
6. KEY RESULT AREAS
Professional Practice at all times within the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Professional Conduct Develop the role by using evidence-based practice and continuously improve own knowledge, following PREP guidelines. Clinical Responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of care plans for patients to ensure delivery of a high standard of care. Work within and monitor standards of care within the defined policies, procedures, standards and protocols of the Department, Directorate and Division to ensure adherence to, and delivery of, a high quality service. Maintain effective communications with patients, relatives and other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure that appropriate information is shared and patient needs are met. Organise own workload to ensure that the interests of patients/clients are met. Participate in clinical audit and research as required. Develop and maintain a sound knowledge base and practice relevant to the clinical setting. Participation in on-call rota to cover emergency service needs which is 24 hours per day/7 days a week. Managerial In the absence of the Charge Nurse/Deputy Charge Nurse, take charge of the department for the management of the daily responsibilities, including work allocation, deployment and supervision of staff, to ensure smooth running of the area. Lead, supervise and assess junior staff/learners ensuring competencies are met whilst providing care to patients. Recognise importance of resolving complaints timeously and effectively at local level and escalate as appropriate. Education Undertake teaching of registered and non-registered nursing staff, including pre and post registration students, and participate in the implementation of staff personal development plans to facilitate ongoing development. Demonstrate a commitment to personal continuing professional development, and actively participate in Performance Review/appraisal. Lead motivate develop and support the nursing team, utilising mentorship, objective setting and appraisal, enabling education needs of nursing staff are met.
7a. EQUIPMENT AND MACHINERY
Post Holder is expected to have a knowledge and ability to use equipment in the area, however may not have daily clinical involvement.
Generic equipment- electric beds, computers, pat slides, glide sheets, oxygen, trolleys, wheelchairs, fridge, fire equipment, pneumatic tube, x-ray viewing boxes.
Specialised equipment – Infusion devices, BP machines, glucometers, hoist, suction equipment and computer.
Highly specialised equipment- cardiac monitors, pulse oximeters, defibrillator, fluoroscopy equipment, syringe drivers, ultrasound machines, thrombectomy devices, bear hugger, angiography catheters and wires, angioplasty balloons, intravascular stents, embolisation coils and particles, biopsy needles. Manipulation of fine tools requiring accuracy and highly developed skills.

8. ASSIGNMENT AND REVIEW OF WORK
The Post holders work is generated from the demand for radiological procedures services within the division, legislation and performance indicators set by the Scottish Executive Health Department. The outcome of this will benefit the quality of the service to the patient. The post holder will be responsible to the Nurse Manager who will provide clinical guidance and professional management, work review and formal appraisal of performance. When on-call the post holder is the only radiology nurse on-site and therefore responsible for carrying out emergency duties. Workload will be assigned by the Nurse Manager or Deputy however the Staff Nurse will have responsibility for managing defined workload within professional guidelines. The Post holder will delegate/allocate work to the team in the absence of more senior staff.

The post holder is expected to make clinical and professional autonomous decisions on a daily basis. Provide clinical and professional advice to the multidisciplinary team. Analysis and assessment of patient condition to establish the continuing care plan. Work within one’s own limitations

On-call commitment
The absence of direct supervision from senior nursing staff when out of hours.
Very busy radiology department with continually changing lists, which are altered according to urgency and capacity.

Internal: The post holder will be expected to communicate and liaise with the patient and their relatives in the provision of care.
