The months of preparation by the many dedicated volunteers have once again put all of the pieces in place for the Festival. The list of talented participants from the city of Kenora, Dryden, Fort Frances and the surrounding area is very impressive. We should consider ourselves fortunate that we have such a great wealth of people, of all ages, who are prepared to present their talents for adjudication and encouragement. The benefits of the Festival are numerous. It gives an opportunity for the artist to showcase their talent before an appreciative audience. This is a very important part of the learning process. The performers will now have the opportunity to hear other musicians, actors, and see visual artists, all of whom will receive a written adjudication for their effort. The goal of the Festival is to encourage all of the participants to do their best, and enjoy the enthusiasm of those around them. It is a known fact that participation in this type of activity has had very positive affects in the life skills of the individuals.

I am always impressed when an individual mentions that he or she was in the Festival years ago and remembers it all with fond memories. In a number of cases they are encouraging children and friends to participate.

Next year we will celebrate the 75th edition of the Festival, we would like to make it very special and will offer further ideas as the time approaches. I feel that it is very important for us as a community to keep this valuable asset alive and well. The arts play a very important part in the fabric of our community, and deserve the support and encouragement of all of us.

Thank you to all of the many dedicated volunteers who contribute countless hours of work and support to the Festival. The Festival committee would like to offer special thanks to our loyal financial contributors for their continued and valued support.

The Hi-Lites Concert this year is Saturday, April 28rth at Knox United Church at 7:00 pm.

See you at the Festival,

Len Mark

BAND AND INSTRUMENTAL ADJUDICATOR: Janice Finlay

Biography

Saxophonist Janice Finlay is one of those rare artists who successfully merges outstanding talent as a performer with remarkable teaching ability.

A graduate of McGill University’s prestigious jazz performance program and a “triple threat” in the woodwind world, Janice performs professionally on all members of the saxophone, flute and clarinet families. She is the first-call sax player for Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra Pops concerts, visiting “big-name” touring artists (including Kenny Rogers, Wayne Newton and Bob Newhart) and national and local musical theatre productions. In addition, Janice directs her own jazz and commercial groups and is a long-time member of Winnipeg’s Ron Paley Big Band. Janice’s critically-acclaimed feature jazz albums, She’s Hip and Anywhere But Here, showcase her extraordinary artistry as a performer, composer and arranger, and have garnered her new fans from all over the globe.

Janice is also an award-winning music educator who has maintained an active and varied teaching practice since taking on her first private student in 1978. While she enthusiastically delivers jazz appreciation courses to the general public, Janice also has extensive experience instructing post-secondary music students, band students within the public and private school systems, and numerous private woodwind students, many of whom have continued on to successful professional music careers. In addition she is the founder and director of both the Summer Camp for Sax Doublers and the Woodwind Whizards Ensemble Camp that take place annually at the Winnipeg Conservatory of Music.
