Sedimentary Rocks

As you can see in this picture, the sedimentary rocks are bigger towards the surface and then eventually get weathered down to clay particles the farther it goes. The biggest rocks are the sands and gravel, then there are the sands, with the smallest and most weathered rock silts and clays. Through, gradient, discharge, channel and velocity the rivers will go faster and therefore carry more sediments.

How Does a River Help Form Sedimentary Rocks?

In this picture, you can see that the bigger rocks are closer to the surface. As the velocity of the water decreases, then the bigger rocks drop out and are therefore “sorted” by sediment. The waves and currents may then redistribute the sediment over great distances. The energy of motion plays a key part in the formation. As sediments compress together and compact(cementation), as you see in this picture it forms a sedimentary rock. Sedimentary rocks

can be formed in Rivers, floodplains, and reefs.

Procedure For Activity Put a layer of rice krispies at the bottom of your

cup.(this will represent the sand) Put a layer of crushed chocolate wafers in your

cup.(this will represent the mud and silt) Put another layer of rice krispies in your cup. Put a layer of M&M’s/chocolate chips/marsh

mellows in your cup.(this represents the sediments)

Slightly press down to express compression Slowly pour the milk and watch as it penetrates

throughout the cup. DIG IN!

Examples of Sedimentary Rocks

Conglomerate Sandstone

Shale

Conglomerate can be used as building material

Page 7: Sedimentary rocks and Formation

Conglomerate is the most porus of the three types of rocks.

The grand Canyon is made up of layers of sedimentary rocks.

Silica and Calcite naturally cements the layers in the sedimentary rocks.
