LET’S GET ON THE SAME PAGE AND READ THE SAME BOOK! This spring, Sedona Public Library brings you opportunities to explore local history in a fun way with our Read Around Sedona program. We invite the entire community to read the novel House of Apache Fires, by local author Morgan Jameson. This historical thriller will take you from a Sedona ranch, to the steam tunnels of Flagstaff and the nearby ordnance depot, to war-torn Germany. We’re excited to share this entertaining and informative book with you and hope you join in the celebration. Check the calendar for the kick-off event with the author, book discussions, programs with experts on Arizona’s role in World War II, and a visit with descendants of Oak Creek Canyon pioneers, who will share memories of 1940s Sedona. And be sure to visit Red Rock State Park, where much of the book’s action takes place. To expand your knowledge of our local history, visit the Library to check out a Culture Pass and get free admission for two people to Sedona Heritage Museum and also to the Pioneer Museum in Flagstaff. Museum exhibits are filled with artifacts that document the history of life in Northern Arizona. Other passes will allow you to visit an additional 17 institutions in Arizona. This spring, we offer another new opportunity. When the Library received a donation of property to build the current library building, it included an adjacent house. Over the years, the house has been rented to a number of groups. Recently, the Library decided to make that space available for the Friends of Sedona Library to offer books and other items for sale year-round. We encourage you to support the new bookstore. As the Library approaches its 60th anniversary in 2018, we continue to honor the past and embrace the future. Come check us out and watch us grow, and thank you for supporting us along the way!

Sedona Public Library is proud to hold its first-ever community read program, Read Around Sedona. We encourage you to join in this shared community experience by reading the book and participating in Read Around Sedona festivities throughout April and May. Our selected book is House of Apache Fires, written by local author Morgan Jameson. This historic thriller set during World War II takes place in Sedona and the Frye home located within Red Rock State Park. The action-packed plot mixes real historic characters like Jack and Helen Frye with fictional Nazis who have embarked on a daring sabotage mission. The intrigue and the romance extend into neighboring Flagstaff and war-torn Germany. From military veterans to veteran hikers, from thrill seekers to those who just love the thrill of our rich landscape, all readers will find a storyline to enjoy in House of Apache Fires. Jameson says he wanted to write a local story and knew he had his topic when he came across a website about Jack and Helen Frye purely by accident. He explains, “The more I looked into the Fryes’ history and all the people they knew, the more fascinated I became. Everything came out of that initial find. It began as a murder

mystery, but everywhere I looked, I found something interesting, and it just kept growing in scope. It ended up as an Indiana Jones–type story—a ‘WWII Western,’ so to speak. Because the Fryes knew Elliott Roosevelt and Faye Emerson, Harry Truman and Howard Hughes among others, I found it easy to enrich the story by using real people.” Copies of House of Apache Fires are available at the Library, and a limited number of sets are available for book clubs. Books will be available to purchase at some of the events, and you can also purchase the Kindle edition at Amazon.com or check out the EPUB edition on the Library’s OverDrive ebooks platform.

KATHY WEGE

KATHY WEGE has volunteered for many different organizations in the various places she has lived in the U.S. and Canada. After she raised her four daughters and moved to Sedona in 2000, she decided to volunteer at Sedona Public Library, figuring it was a way to make connections in her new community.   Kathy has worked every position at the Library’s circulation desk. She also shelves books and trains new circulation volunteers. She loves working with the other volunteers and with the staff, who she describes as professional and appreciative of the help she provides. In addition, Kathy enjoys the challenge of resolving issues that come up at the front desk and, in the process, meeting and assisting library patrons and visitors. When she’s not volunteering, Kathy takes advantage of the Library’s programs and displays. Among her favorites are the annual quilt show, photography exhibits, and the Monday night movie. She also likes that the Library is so community oriented by making meeting space available to nonprofit groups and by hosting events. Kathy encourages fellow Sedonans to get involved in their community by volunteering at the Library. “There are volunteer positions for all,” she explains. “If you prefer working quietly by yourself, you can shelve, repair books, organize magazines, or pull

holds. If working with the staff and public is your first choice, the circula-tion desk is a rewarding, challenging place to be. Computer volunteers interact with the patrons as well. Friends of the Library need many helpers for the book sale twice a year, and they have an ongoing need for volunteers.” Kathy can’t emphasize enough how supportive the staff is and how much the volunteers enjoy working with them. “The patrons are grateful too,” she observes, “often thanking us for our time and assistance.” Most importantly, Kathy says, volunteering is fun: “At this point in my life, I try to only do what gives me pleasure. I’ve earned it!” Over the years, Kathy has seen numerous changes at the Library, such as the self-service checkout stations, which she’s noticed have

helped the circulation department run more smoothly and have improved the patron experience. Yet no matter how automated the Library becomes, Kathy stays busy at the front desk and still feels appreciated by patrons. She especially likes dealing with the younger patrons, who come in regu-larly checking out and returning 10, 20, or more picture books at a time. She remarks, “Many of them know how to use their own cards even if they have to stand on their tippy toes!” We are thankful for Kathy’s valuable contributions to the Library, and during her years of service, Kathy has become aware of the value the Library provides to Sedona, which she sums up this way: “Just about everyone in this town comes through the Library at some time. I believe that the community feels that this is truly their library, a community resource for all.”

As part of Read Around Sedona, the Library has planned events in Sedona and the Village of Oak Creek. All programs are free and open to the public. The kick-off event, featuring author Morgan Jameson, will take place at the main library on April 12. At this presentation, Jameson will cover a broad range of topics, including his book research, his writing process, and the work involved in self-publishing. A list of additional events can be found in the calendar on page 6 of this publication or on our online calendar at www.sedonalibrary.org.

Read Around Sedona is an Arizona Community Reads program, supported by the Arizona State Library, Archives & Public Records, a division of the Secretary of State, with federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

We are excited about this opportunity for our community and hope you will participate in Read Around Sedona!

“It’s a win-win for everyone.”

An Appreciated Gift

ELLEN WHITE, library volunteer and member of Friends of Sedona Library, made a recent gift to the Library using appreciated stock. Ellen explains, “I donated my stock at today’s market price, I didn’t have to pay capital gains (20 percent), and the Library gets the appreciated value. It’s a win-win for everyone.” For Ellen, and her deceased husband Jay, supporting literacy and children is a lifetime commitment. “Schools have suffered so many cutbacks, but literacy is paramount to a vibrant community,” Ellen observes. She is proud of the Library’s youth services department and all the Library does for local children and families. Likewise, she is pleased with all the support the Friends give to children’s activities and events. With this in mind, she directed her appreciated stock gift to help create the Friends’ used bookstore, located in the small house adjacent to the Library. The used bookstore will have its grand opening on May 15, 2017. Proceeds from book sales support the Library and its programs, including youth services. “I am happy to support literacy and the Library,” Ellen says. “It is so much more than a place to borrow books.”

Exciting Year Ahead for Sedona FriendsFriends of Sedona Library have assisted the Library since its opening in 1958. They continue to carry out their mission to provide financial support, having contributed well over $1 million in the past 15 years alone for collection development, children’s programming, and numerous other improvements and services. In 2017, the Friends group will debut a new location for their book sale, which opens on May 15. The Library has provided an adjacent property so the Friends can hold sales in their own space, right next door to the main library. The Friends’ entire inventory will now be available all year long for patrons and visitors alike! Watch for more details on the May grand opening. This year also brings back the Festival of Wreaths, a popular fundraising

The next time you visit the Library, take a walk through the children’s room, which is just to the right of the dinosaur. You will find a beautiful, comfortable learning space with over 15,000 books in various formats for infants and toddlers, preschoolers, elementary school–age children, and parents. Opportunities for imaginative play, social and literacy skill building, and creative making are always at hand, as is access to four computers and wireless internet. A collection of books for high schoolers is found in a teen friendly area of the main library, located next to the outdoor courtyard. Thanks to our local Red Rock Quilters group, three large floor cushions were re-covered with bright, striped material, making the area more inviting and comfortable for our teens. Moving forward, we will encourage and cultivate teen participa-tion. As the intended users of a teen area, they will help design a space that represents their needs. For youth of all ages, Sedona Public Library continually offers educational and entertaining events, including the upcoming summer reading program. Children, teens, and adults are invited to participate in the eight-week event, which kicks off on Saturday, June 3, with a magic show in the community room. All of the summer programs are free, and joining summer reading is as easy as picking up a reading log or signing up on the Library’s website: www.sedonalibrary.org.

If you have been a resident of the Village for a while, you may remember when library materials were returned to a box at Weber’s IGA. That changed in 2005, when former library director David Keeber and a committee of Village residents, concerned about traffic issues with the Highway 179 improvement project, requested funding from the Yavapai County Board of Supervi-sors and the Yavapai Library District to open a library service center in the VOC. Residents of the Village also generously donated funds to support the project. Sedona Public Library in the Village opened in December of 2005 at 56 W. Cortez Drive in a room with 450 square feet and three public access computers. Today, the service center, located at Suite 51A in Bell Rock Plaza, has 1,100 square feet of space with six public access computers, free Wi-Fi, mobile printing, and a Library Document Station. Our statistics show the Village library continues to thrive, with significant growth in number of new library cards issued, number of patrons using the facility, and number of items being checked out. Community outreach programs in the Village include a monthly book discussion at Sedona Winds and a monthly Arizona Humanities speaker program at the Church of the Nazarene. We currently have 17 volunteers and one staff person. We appreciate the support of our patrons and visitors and look forward to assisting you with your library needs.
