MY THEME: What do I do towards broader ecological awareness and capacity building bridging NATURE – HUMANITY and CULTURES and where I primarily work: Education, Facilitation, Policy making and bridging towards shared cultural expressions, senses and intelligences...

This is a short summary of my work focused on included wider aspects of environmental awareness, education, research and management on all scales, in all sectors, languages and cultures in an overview and communication mode, trying to bridge the domains and facilitate between natural, cultural, social and “Humanities Studies”.

I am extremely rushing the 2 documents requested for the AWARD APPLCIATION as we only yesterday with Gianluca Solera and Helmut Rieth discussed a possible nomination by Torsten Schramm. IJGD http://www.euromedalex.org/node/9299

We have summarized yesterday with impressions from Barcelona Forum 2010 on the last slide: Closing Session (17), the requirements and challenges outline by Katarina Stigwall: which I subsumed immediate when she presented. I fully resonated with her words as this is my work since nearly 40 years.

• Ecological Sustainability Challenge • Take Culture as a wide overarching

concept which needs to encompass:- spirituality – religions and

values- societal dimension, in social,

economic and political context

• Ökologische Nachhaltigkeit Herausforderung• Kultur ist der Kern unserer Identität und umfaßt:- Spiritualität – Religion und Werte- Gesellschaftliche Dimensionen im sozialen, ökonomischen und politischen Kontext

See: http://www.open-forum.de/Barcelona-Forum-2010/

I was totally struck by her synopsis as our ECOTHEE symposia and other event where focussed on OIKOS – ECUMENE – ECUDOMY in 2008 in Crete: (see link below)And this article on IGNORANCE and COMAPASSION which will also be hitting the streets in another book with this title: Ecological Awareness - Exploring Religion, Ethicsand Aesthetics (forthcoming) Bd. 3, 208 S., Studies in Religion and the Environment publishedon behalf of the European Forum for the Study of Religion and the Environment, ISBN 978-3-8258-1950-7INTERN already now available at: http://benking.de/futures/ECOTHEE--ignorance-compassion.pdfIn view of the UNESCO day of CUTURAL DIVERSITY and this deadline today I just remember and old presentation from TROPEN which can nicely open thie collage on activities around including all requirements requested in Barcelona:

I work since the early 70th around environment and ecology, even when astray in between in other areas and came always back to education and communication as we need to build the needed covenant by bridging arts and media:

I work since 20 years now in education as I see the challenge in bridging natural, cultural, social diversities incl. Humanities, as with the Global Change exhibition form May 1990 (which I curate since 1996). http://benking.de/Global-Change/system-earth-posters.htmlhttp://benking.de/futures/Poster-Global-Change-1990.pdf

This has much to do with the TOPOGRAMM environmental research, monitoring and management concepts I worked with around geo-eco-dynamics and much more, so please visit: http://benkig.de/Global-Change/

I work with youth on trying to bridge exact and fine arts, coded and non-coded expressions and sign systems, and Work with YOUTH. Please see our PNW profile in the German ALF Network: http://www.euromedalex.org/node/9299And IJGD which I presented before not only around 1001 ACTIONS FOR DIALOG http://www.euromedalex.org/node/8932

After working in UN – G7 Harmonisation projects I had realized that we have to learn concretely and across domains, scales, levels, languages, and this challenges outline by Katarina exactly addresses these needs..

As I have only 2 hours to write the text for this application I am very desperate, but feel this issues is “me” and I hope we can find more attention and force to reach the necessary wider public awareness and the classrooms, lifelong learning and the situation rooms, as present knowledge and thinking is isolated in silos and segregated, with disciplines fight for “their” turf.

My work since 15+years is trying to bring the issues onto the “table” and help develop courses and youth media platforms, and alter the trans-disciplinary discourse. This also includes other forms of dialog and deliberation for community-building, learning, peace and policy making. as we discussed in Barcelona in the AGORA and exercised at the magic roundtable.

I voluntarily advised also the ijgd www.ijgd.de and represented it in the ALF German network as youth work-camps are ideal vehicles to learn form each other and tear down the

My experience is that many of our wording and concepts are disembodied and abstract. To make them “tangible” we build maps and models to jointly learn and be able to negotiate different viewpoints, positions, and perspectives and cultural expressions.

A Metaparadigm or Sharable Framework - (Cognitive Panorama) Heiner Benking, The Club of Budapest

Objective: To counteract Cyberculture's anticipated impact due to its 1.) 'open- ended' universality, 2.) loss of meaning, and 3.) loss of context, impact, as reflected in the metaphor of the 'Second Flood' (Lévy 1996), the proposal of a 'Cognitive Panorama' allows us to embody and map concepts in their context and develop 'common frames of reference'.

The proposed Conceptual Superstructure defines and identifies topics as logical places, displays relations, and connections within this topics or issues, and helps us in this way to locate and become aware of 1.) what we know and miss, 2.) where we are and what we think, and 3.) where we mis-, under-use or manipulate information. By avoiding a 'flat' chaotic mess of data which leads to the known 'lost- in-space' syndrome, we actually define cognitive spaces, making use of the known orientational and organisational benefits. Through reflection on conceptual positions, outlining and embodying situations or topics (logical places or containers), we can follow meaning into embodied context and semantic spaces and also scrutinise abstract 'realities' by exploring participatory and collaboratory approaches.

Viewpoint, Generation, Transportation and Composition Heiner Benking

In order to intersect in a transdisciplinary and transcultural sense, within, between and beyond domains, we need other vehicles, other modes of motion and mental mobility and a framework for orientation. In this paper, we propose a reference and representation space for subjects and objects, real and imaginary, abstract and fictive. The Panorama utilizes spaces as bodies or knowledge or meta-knowledge, a space to mark even the things we leave blank and by using metaphorics or orientation and exploration and by becoming accustomed to realms we can grasp mentally as we are used to grasping objects physically : in short, a medium between concepts and context. The notion of space is common across cultures as people experience space in early childhood. The Panorama combines SPACES into one composite 3xSpace/Time Panorama or ThinkSPACE, getting away from thinking within single concepts and boxes, but finding common structures and transferring knowledge and meta-knowledge. Such a movement enables an exchange of positions and perspectives, allows us to discuss new avenues into cross-disciplinary areas in subjects such as education, management, organization, philosophy. http://creative.lboro.ac.uk/lutchi/author_abstracts.html#hb

We design workshops with youth on OUT OF THE BOX THINKING and PARADIGM MAPPING where we use the concrete shared and possibly negotiated concepts and maps and spaces and outlined above. (NEEDS TO BE EXPANDED !!!)

I am awfully sorry as my time is running out – but I hope someone will find the time now or later to check with youth, media and new thinking and languaging what I mean.Maybe see this page from the Nobel Peace Laureats event in berlin when the Berlin wall had come down 20 years earlier: http://quergeist.net/Peace-Laueats-Climate-Berlin-Oslo-selection.pdf where this is questioned and where I contributed:

and some concrete recommendations are made: (including mapping and outlining GLOBAL COMMONS, see Elinore OSTROMs contribution outlined in slide 3, summing up her 30 yersw life-time achievement for which she got the NOBEL Prize in Economics last November)

MANY THANKS FOR YOUR ATTENTIONAND FOR TAKING THE PAIN TO LOOK at pictures and words, as you might remember for them a pictures is worth 10 000 words, and their language looks “top- down” from context to detail, much different from what children learn in European Cultures.

PS:I met and consulted the founders of POWERPOINT in the mid 80ies, so I am fond of infographique – infographics since 1981 ! – I have to leave you know with my picture-strom for most of you – but only to keep in mid that we have to be aware of the context and values connected in shared spaces !!

PPS : Immersed into the ”Credibility of Ecology” Trilogy in the mid 80ies (GeoJournal, written by diCastri and Hadley (UNESCO Ecology Division). I feel we need to expand this to the Credibility of the Concept of Cultures, as there are humane, social, cultural ecology fields and society urgently needing a common ground and shared languaging see NO WALLS link above….

I recently had an invitation CBD research director jo mulongoy <[email protected]> to come to Montreal where the topic with UNESCO is bridging biological and cultural diversity. http://www.cbd.int/meetings/icbcd/ (the expanded programm is unfortunaltely cancelled and “shrunk” into a one day executive high level section !!

I had presented at the TROPIC Day at Humbold University in 1999 exactly that theme and I can ask for a letter of recommendation form UN-CBD Montreal if that would help…

A good outline of my “developments” were don for the UN year of the MOUNTAINS some years ago:

Last not least I recommend the UN AMR recommendations and how they link into the issues of values and deliberation and capacity building/peace-making:http://www.quergeist.net/AMR-2008/

e – DISCUSSION ON ACHIEVING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The theme for the 2008 AMR is "Implementing the internationally agreed goals and commitments in regard to sustainable development".

A moderated e-discussion on Achieving Sustainable Development is being jointly organized by the UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and UNDP from 4 February to 14 March 2008 as part of the larger global consultation process for the 2008 Annual Ministerial Review. Experts, practitioners and policy-makers, from within and outside of the UN system, will interact within this online forum to share relevant experiences and generate practical input towards this year's AMR. Roundtable learning from experience during the last 40 years and new ideas

Stumbling blocks preventing true dialog, peace-making, and reconciliation:

1) we fight over words but do not check the meaning,

2) we do not question and compare the values attached to statements and attitudes,

3) we do not contextualize and embody concepts and meaning, do not check the sectors, regions, scales, proportions and consequences of alternative actions,

4) we do not give voice, empower, listen, cherish and cultivate difference or variety in dialog and decision making,

5) Disorientation and dumbing-down in Cyberculture and a mis-administered and misunderstood, intangible “Globalisation / Glocalisation”: Where we get overloaded by communication noise (sign/symbol melange) and media demagogy which means: no trust and fidelity in the statements and no ways and means to check the credibility and impact/relevance, and get lost between the scales, brackets, and sectors.

6) The above incompatibility and incomparability opens the door for over-claims and oversimplifications. Leaders use intangible jargon (plastic-words), neglect impacts and avoid instead of exploring differences and alternatives.

I also propose revisiting: all Proposals A-Z done for a unique AMR on Sustainability

Harnessing Virtual Worlds for Arts and Humanities ResearchSynopsis of Program: Scholars and researchers from many disciplines within the humanities are on the verge of a profoundchange in the way they search for, construct, and present knowledge to colleagues. Virtual Worlds, in addition to an array ofother digital tools, will bring about significant changes within the humanities by facilitating multi-institutional, cross-disciplinaryresearch and collaboration as well as providing new ways to recreate and contextualize evidence that heretofore was impossibleto study or publish. <snip> see the original call by the Federation of American Scientists and SRI International on thelast page or: www.fas.org/programs/ltp/emerging_technologies/humanities/_Media/proposal-harnessingvirtual.pdf

Positions and Identities in Global Contexts:

Awareness of Self and Others with me, you, we, they and "others"

models

UNESCO Headquarters, Paris 1997

Situational Analysis

Positionality and Personality are deeply intertwined and so is our identity connected to our fields of activities, influence, and frames of references.

The issue is that we think, act, and associate not just for ourselves "the I" in modern societies or just our families, friends, groups, clans, nations, "the we", but also with other's, something apart from us like the "you" or the others.

Traditionally we have been focussing on the me and the you, ignoring the positions and personalities of others and ignoring the greater whole of all beings or the we of Gaia's earthlings, or other living thingssss or communicates, and maybe even aliens or call it "other".

To concretely communicate and share individual positions, differences and commons and constructively realise differences and create greater commons we have to keep in mind not only the who, but also the where, how and what.

What we are talking here about are fields within fields, or patterns within patterns and meta-patterns.

The Problems

Our language and ways of thinking and reasoning (dualistic and clockwise) approaches, our labelings and maybe call it "box thinking". Footnote 1, and our annotations and sign systems, where we separate our representations into -sign-systems which are isolated symbols, icons and indexes (according to C.S. Peirce. Not connecting like in our living world our observations and concepts like our perception through the senses in the natural world leads to another deep canyon for our shared mental constructions.

Focussing with de-constructivism, constructivism and radical constructivism into one-eyed or ego-centered construction in our sweet isolation leads into and reinforces isolation and hinders shared observations and realities.

Another issue are the different scale platforms, our actions and effects we cause on other levels, spacial and temporal dimensions. Finally we have to connect this with other spheres, other cultures and languages.

One possible way which needs exploration and testing - AND connections to other ways and means to re-connect

If we embody fields of action and interests we can relate and overlay these "fields within fields", (Stuhlman) we can see patterns and meta-patterns that connect Ĭ If we only tentatively and pragmatically agree on shared imaginary spaces (3-dimensional and extensional).

Page 21: see for full scale-whole picture the documentation at: … · 2010. 5. 20.  · XIII World Conference of World Futures Studies Federation, COHERENCE AND CHAOS IN OUR UNCOMMON FUTURES-Visions,

Why all this trouble?

(box thinking and clock-wise thinking or old&new embodied or tangible thinking and communicating (sharing)!?

Is it not enough to separate the "me" and the "you", the "in" versus the "out", the "urban" and the "pagan", the natural vs. the cultural, the black vs. the white, ecology vs. deep-ecology, north vs. south, east vs. west, body vs. soul, real / material vs. virtual (imaginary/potential/immaterial), exoteric /esoteric, perspective vs. a-perspective, coded (signs) vs. non-coded (icons), good vs. evil, given vs. not-given?

And through this labelling and "boxing" (Schachteldenken) make order and seperate, divide and govern (divide et impera) ?

I want to show here that we need to get beyond such "over-simplistic" see: http://www.ceptualinstitute.com/genre/benking/overview.htm ignorance, because this only makes us believe we know and have orientation, when we have not !

Global Sharing and CopingStarting Points

HARMONIZATIONThe first and most central entry points have been arounda G7 and SRU German Environmental experts initiative which was taken up by the UN - Environment Programme UNEP - HEM.

GLOBAL CHANGEThe other started with the GLOBAL CHANGE conference 1988 in Moskow. Germany and other countries had been invited to present„Challenges to Science and Politics“ in form of Conferences and Exhibitions. As I was invited to contribute I had to think anew on how such complex Issues could be communicated to the broaderpublic, raising awareness and consciousness, and being correct and helpful for scientists , politicians, and industry at the same time. I gopublic now 1998 as after having this touring exhibition 8 years in Germany, but never been shown outside Germany, and beingupdated and in high demand, there is high danger of losing thispiece and milestone . Politics look east and local when theexhibition was opened in May 1990. The result we haveno publiceye and information about theexhibition, its scope and results. As this is fatal in my view , I fee I haveto change and address that.

I could have also called this UIA guest page GLOBAL CHANGE or LOCAL AND GLOBAL CHANGE - as my work started aboutglobal environmentalissues in 1988 with such wide and universal themes. Only because I was involvedin two or more projects at that time, and havea certain backgroundwhich was about preparingand documentingdecisions and presentingresults, I was able to make the bridge, combinewhat normally is not seen as one- or in onesolution. As bothproject concepts are not onlyof wider interest and uniquein their approach, specially in their time we are proposinghere to follow each backgroundindependentlyand then join in again the flow of events.

Pointers to possibilities: Ekistics, Dymaxion World and Eco-Cube The metaphor offered by Rubik's Cube was used by Heiner Benking to develop a "Rubik's Cube of Ecology" in 1990 (as part of the Global Change touring exhibition) as a means of explaining the nature of integration and of developing a framework for co-ordination and harmonisation across various fields, areas, regions, disciplines and domains (Visual Access Strategies for Multi-Dimensional Objects and Issues, 1993). It was designed to offer a new world view, using a hyperlinked Eco-Cube, for better understanding and communication about multi-disciplines like ecology.

Views of the Eco-Cube

The Eco-Cube is reminiscent of the Ekistics Grid developed by C.A, Doxiadis as a framework for organizing information relevant to ekistics as the science of human settlements. This has been used to further develop ekistic concepts, and also in the application to practical problems. Such a grid display any component within two dimensions at a point of intersection of abscissa and ordinate The abscissa of ekistic units remained constant in all uses of the ekistic grid, and the most usual ordinate consisted of the five ekistic elements: Nature, Anthropos (Man), Society, Shells (dwellings or buildings), and Networks, with a sixth line denoting their Synthesis.

Abstract Planners who work to support the emergence and transformation of sociocultural systems need to work across multiple planes of activity, influence and interaction. These include abstract issues of differing value systems and concrete challenges of finite physical resources. When sorting through a complex array of issues and opportunities, the planning process benefits from explicitly establishing the dimensionality of the situation. Understanding this dimensionality guides planners to consider features of all of the dimensions of a situation in plans for future action.

The dimensionality of a complex situation is most reliably established through the use of abductive logic as pioneered by Charles Sanders Peirce. This principle has been extensively validated through the Archanesian geometry, which serves as the foundation of Interactive Management and Structured Dialogic Design (SM). The challenge in meaningful application of abductive logic in complex situations is that the task must be implemented through a collaborative convergence of a sufficiently diverse community of perspectives. No single "expert" can derive an abductive solution independently because no one can possibly have the requisite scope of understanding that is needed to produce an inclusive product.

Building upon the pioneering work of Constantinos Apostolos Doxiadis in the field of idealized design of human settlements, Alexander Nicholas Christakis has collaborated closely with Hasan Ozbekhan, John Warfield and other thought leaders in the field of systems science. Dr. Christakis' work spans integrated work in eliciting tacit knowledge and fuzzy understandings from highly diversified planning groups, leading those groups into discovery of meaning, in to the construction of dimensional understandings and systems view, and supporting the emergence of strongly held commitments for collaborative action.

2)Finding Transcendent Ways to Unite People and Issues in the field of Human and Global Change

Benking, Heiner (1); MacBryde, David (2); King, Lynn (3) Organization(s): 1: Tagore-Einstein Council, Berlin, Shantiniketan; 2: Yale University , Berlin; 3: SageVision, Shanghai Submitted by: Heiner Benking (Tagore-Einstein Council, DE), ID: 1316 Themes: Theories and conceptsKeywords: Education, cognition, creativity, frames, schemas, models, maps, visualization, overview, orientation, oversimplifications, overclaims, world-views, systems, complexity, dialog, deliberation, embodiment, participation, deliberation, games, situation rooms

Abstract Our community of environmental research and management is as fragmented as the whole scientific community and humanity. Why? Are there ways for meaningful exchange across languages, subjects and scales? We need transcendent ways to unite people -- through expression of diverse viewpoints, seeing the bigger picture, and negotiating common ground, understanding overlaps, connections, and differences.

Review of issues, reports and “out of the box thinking” including paradigm mapping showing the historical context of communication and cognitive challenges, is essential. Using innovative maps, models, approaches, and concepts, we will create a shared ‘chain of methods’ (Methodenkette) that can be negotiated upon.

1) “Switching Systems” between languages, terminologies and taxonomies (Ingetraut Dahlberg);

Page 32: see for full scale-whole picture the documentation at: … · 2010. 5. 20.  · XIII World Conference of World Futures Studies Federation, COHERENCE AND CHAOS IN OUR UNCOMMON FUTURES-Visions,

2) Multidisciplinary foundations of multidimensional issues (Stephen Jay Kline);

3) System Earth models of combined spaces (Cognitive Panorama / Eco-Cube from the Global Change exhibition);

4) A spectrum of meaning (Herbert Stachowiak), concept and context terminology, mappings & meta-data harmonization;

5) "Commons" presented a nested, multi-modal, policentric, actor based and across scales sectors (Elinor Ostrom);

6) Facilitation and visualization workshops as above (Kurt Hanks);

7) Integration of sign-systems in embodied immersive schemas (models), and

8) a look at other cultures and other representational forms -- e.g. Chinese written characters are supersigns, as they integrate elements into shared frames or superstructures (see ICSU-CODATA workshops on the future of multi-media).

There is an obvious need to change our modes and paradigms in concrete, sharable ways. Past fallacies in communication involved a lack of shared frames of references, even though there was a mandate since Rio '92 to become aware of such commons. If the web of life is to survive on earth, a blended best practices of all aspects society and environment, must emerge.

This workshop offers practical exercises to tackle the above collective dilemmas at hand and reviews work done around establishing collective normative, participatory and prognostic futures.

the challenge is to have no just one competence but combining and using what is needed to cope and get along at all scales and using not only one “grid”, or schema, or competence bring them ecologically and economically, humane and wise to the ground:

1. To create knowledge in a spirit of openness to the world, integrating newperspectives

2. To think and act in a forward looking manner

3. To acquire knowledge and act in an interdisciplinarymanner

4. To be able to plan and act in cooperation with others

5. To be able to participate in decision-making processes

6. To be able to motivate others to become active

7. To be able to reflect upon one’s own principles and those of others

8. To be able to plan and act autonomously

9. To be able to show empathy for and solidarity with thedisadvantaged

10. To be able to motivate oneself to become active
