    RBS AWARENESSWhat is it?RBS Awareness is a newquarterly released information

    Booklet regarding the RBSsgreat work and information

    about the visuallydisadvantaged community.This booklet will and does

    consist of light heartedstories based around greatachievements; not justlimited to fundraising and

    financial support.

    How do I get it?Every issue of this book willbe avaliable from our main

    office or various medicalcenters around the UK. Ifyou regularly donate to theRBS you will be added ontoour mailing list and receive

    your copy every threemonths. This is our new wayof telling you all what greatwork you are helping create.

    WHAT WE DOGrantsThe Royal Blind Society hasbeen helping visually impairedpeople of all ages to live withdignity and independencefor 140 years. Today, with up

    to two million people in theUK coping with a serious

    sight problem, our work is asrelevant and vital as ever.

    Each year we give morethan 100,000 in grants tovisually impaired people onlow incomes.

    HolidaysOver the years we haveopened a variety of Hotelswhich are perfectly safe forthe visually imapared. Weoffer perfect locations with

    beautiful surrounding. Weallow people to be independant.

    OUR HISTORYThe charity was founded in1863 as The Protestant BlindSociety, by the Victorianphilanthropist, Thomas Pocock.

    His aim was to provide helpfor blind or partially sightedpeople in charitable need.In 1884 the name was changed

    to The Blind Pension Societyof the UK. Three years later,in her Golden Jubilee year,Queen Victoria becamepatron of the Society and the

    word Royal was added to

    the title. Royal patronagehas continued through to thepresent day with our currentQueen.

    In 2000 the official namewas shortened to the RoyalBlind Society for the UK, to

    reflect the wider scope of thecharity's work.

    DIABETIC RETINOPATHYWhats this page?With every issue we willbring you information on

    various form of blindness.We are starting with DiabeticRetinopathy.

    What is itDiabetic Retinopathy isretinopathy (damage to the retina)

    caused by complications ofdiabetes mellitus, which can

    eventually lead to blindness.

    It is an ocular manifestationof systemic disease whichaffects up to 80% of allpatients who have had

    diabetes for 10 years ormore. Despite these intimidatingstatistics, research indicatesthat at least 90% of these

    new cases could be reducedif there was proper and vigilanttreatment and monitoring ofthe eyes. The longer a personhas diabetes, the higher their

    chances of lossing sight.

    EVENTSLondon 10k Run

    Last year we celebrated 10years of participating in the

    British London 10k run. Thisyear we have lots moreavailable places for peoplelike you. Money raised from

    this event plays a key part inthe RBS.

    Just WalkIn the May of next year weare holding a new event thatwill call everyone to walk acrossthe Sussex countryside to

    raise vital funds. You canchose to sponsor RBS orany other charity.

    HELP USThe FactsUp to two million people inthe UK have a serious sight

    problem. 800 people lose their sightevery week. One in six people over the

    age of 75 is blind or partially

    sighted. 90% of blind people over60 have an income of less

    than half the national average.

    DonateLife for people with a visualdisorder is hard however

    your donations can help.

    All money donated goesdirectly to Individuals or

    Families needing help; all it

    will cost you is 2 a month.If you donate we will keepyou updated with what you

    money is doing. You can

    make a difference.
