St. Augustine is the nation’s oldest city, the gateway to miles of golden beaches and diversions that fulfill romantic vacation dreams. With its old colonial buildings and cobblestone streets, the Old City seems more like a charming European town than any Florida destination.

Whether you are on your first visit or a regular visitor, this guide will help you find the latest scoop on what’s happening and the best places to eat and play in St. Augustine, Anastasia Island, Ponte Vedra and the beaches.

Art galleries, antiques, hand-crafted home furnishings, shopping bargains and quaint restaurants serving multicultural cuisine have made us Florida’s most unique destination.

So that you won’t miss anything, look for the WHAT’S NEW symbol throughout the guide for the hotspots insiders are talking about this season.

Like the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum on Anastasia Island offers a seagulls’ view of our surrounding waterways and a audio tour about the mari-time history of our nation’s oldest port.

The World Golf Hall of Fame has a All-Access Tour led by expert

curators with behind-the scenes looks at collections and unique photo opportunities.

The Old City buzzes with nightlife, so save time for a pub crawl or a stroll along the bayfront romantically illuminated by the

newly restored Bridge of Lions and the 17th century fort.

You’ll find many valuable coupons for local attractions, shops and restaurants at the back of this guide. It’s our way of saying welcome and inviting you to get the most out your visit.

It may seem like St. Augustine is all about history, but just below the surface is a playful side. Look no further for world-class golf, surfing, kayaking—not to mention fishing and boating.

Founded in 1565, we proudly brag about the oldest house, the first schoolhouse and Flagler’s 20th century railroad era buildings. For an overview of the city, hop on the trolley for a narrated tour. Later you can duck into shops and restored buildings housing interesting attractions.

Tear out the valuable coupons in the back pages of this guide and keep them handy. Our business owners love to give you a discount! And check out these exciting new additions since you last visited.

Your school days were never like this. The exhibits at the Oldest Wooden

Schoolhouse display artifacts of Spanish, British, American and Native American origin retrieved from archeological digs at the property.

Fiesta Falls Miniature Golf, that playground of fun has added cool treats to their menu—chocolate dipped cones and three flavors of velvety smooth milk shakes.

The Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park is the birthplace of the town, the place where Pedro Menendez first encountered Timucuan Indians. Taste the legendary water at the renovated Springhouse and see the Stellarium Star machine at the Planetarium.

History is part of the fabric of life here. Take a carriage ride past the 17th century fort built of native coquina shells and listen to the genteel clip-clop of the horse’s hooves.

To investigate our city’s eerie legends explore our narrow streets and byways after dark with a knowledgeable ghost tour guide. Prepare to be enlightened or frightened….sweet dreams!

Illuminated at night, the Bridge of Lions is the most romantic sight in town. Gaily flying flags during the day, it’s a reminder of days long past.

One of the most loved symbols of St. Augustine, it was overdue for a complete rebuilding. But it took years of discussion and research to return it to its original state.

Replicating the color took researchers back to the day it opened on March 17 in 1927, St. Patrick’s Day. Coincidentally, it was painted green, and so it is again. This restora-tion was a five-year project that began on

St. Valentine’s Day 2005. It appears that saints inadvertently continue to play a part in the life of the city.

Now that the bridge is open again, there’s just one more missing piece in the plan. Once the landscaping is finished in the Fall, the Italian carrara marble lions will be returned to their place of honor overlooking the downtown square.

Be sure to come back in 2011 to see them. The lions are the city’s most popular site for a vacation photo!

When you’re on vacation and hungry, eating out can be the best part of your day.

Our area’s restaurants have a strong sense of culinary diversity that comes from the cultures that thrived here for 400 years. But even more intriguing are the courtyards, inviting brick-walled bistros, urbane sidewalk cafes and breezy verandahs where delicious meals are enjoyed.

Diners can escape the ordinary any day of the week, whether at the beach or in historic neighborhoods. Serving fresh, regional fare, many of our independent restaurant owners are members of the St. Augustine Independent Restaurant Association or SAiRA. Members are committed to surpassing your expectations and contributing to the community in which they live. Look for their logos. Locals go out of their way to visit these friendly, affordable eateries, which is a good reason for you go too.

At the Raintree Seafood and Steakhouse, international fare is served in the intimate atmosphere of a restored 1879 Victorian home. Creative, affordable meals are also served the expanded garden, a gracious setting with gazebos and fountains.

You will love the menu at The Bunnery Café, a popular breakfast and lunch place in historic downtown. If you have a sweet tooth to satisfy, you’ll be drawn by alluring aromas that waft from the bakery, which now serves cup cakes, and all the rage. Red velvet, carrot and chocolate on chocolate—a perfect indulgence while taking a break from sightseeing.

Tried and true—just ask the locals—you’re sure to find Florida specialties and exciting original dishes. Add a fabulous sunset or Old City ambiance and you’ve just eaten your way through a perfect vacation.

5 Servings of Florida’s Fabulous SeafoodBlessed by a coastline extending more than 1,300 miles, Florida’s chefs have taken full advantage of the bounty of the waters. No visit to the Sunshine State would be complete without sampling some of the seafood dishes found on most menus. Here are a few to tempt you.

1 Conch: pronounced “konk.” These chewy clams are served tenderized with lime juice, raw and chopped in salad. Also chopped, breaded and fried as conch fritters and in conch chowder (usually red, spicy).

2 Mahi (or Mahi Mahi): the correct name is dolphin (not the mammal). Firm, white-fleshed and delicious grilled, blackened or Cajun-style.

3 Grouper: one of the mildest fishes available, served fried, blackened, broiled or grilled as an entrée, but a fried grouper sandwich is hard to beat.

4 Yellowfin tuna: a firm, flavorful semi-dark meat fish most often grilled, broiled or blackened.

5 Florida lobster: known as spiny lobster, has no claws like Maine lobster. Florida lobster tails are broiled and served with melted butter. Absolutely delicious!

Once you’ve shopped in St. Augustine, it’s hard to find another place where so many beautiful things are concentrated in such a few square miles.

Think of the historic district of St. Augustine as a giant department store, only there are streets with shops instead of aisles.

St. Augustine is the real deal when it comes to shopping for old maps, nautical artifacts, French and English antiques, books and vintage linens. Specialty shops also carry an excellent assortment of contemporary pieces: precious gem jewelry, art glass and home furnishings.

Pedestrian friendly streets make the shopping experience pleasant whether your taste runs to antiques or trendy boutiques. Nearby there’s always a cafe where you can drop in for light refreshments.

And if you love designer labels at bargain prices, an upscale outlet mall is just a short drive away.

The Knife Factory, a favorite stop for both collectors and home chefs, has moved to a location on State Road 16 in the Shoppes at Mill Creek. The largest collection of world famous cutlery in Florida includes antique items, pocket knives, special collections and historic swords.

The San Sebastian Winery has a wine, Proprietors Reserve, described as similar to a light port. After the complimentary tour and tastings, browse through the wine and gift shop. They will be glad to ship your purchases home.

From quaint boutiques in the Old City to beachside emporiums stocked with cool tropical apparel and swimwear, shopping in our area makes your visit feel satisfyingly complete.

Whatever treasure you bring home, it will always have special meaning because you traveled to St. Augustine to find it.
