Movie Review: Arbitrage‘Arbitrage’ starring Richard Gere as a hedge-fund magnate is a penetrating movie, and as always, Richard Gere is brilliant in this role. Susan Saradon plays his wife, Ellen, and she thinks her life with him is simply perfect.Miller (played by Gere) is in it over his head desperately trying to complete the sale of his trading empire. He is having trouble balancing his work life, family life and an affair on the side. He is a man in deep trouble.

A sensational story line this has you sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for the next explosive moment – a thrilling suspense about love, loyalty and high finance.

The concert will follow an exciting two-hour jazz workshop opportunity for local vocal students in the region.

Director of the UHCM, Adam Wills, said, “Janet has a rare an enviable reputation as a jazz vocalist and like Diana Krall she doubles on piano. We are really lucky to have her visit as part of our 2013 Visiting Artists Series”.

Based in Sydney, Janet Seidel has released 17 CDs in Australia as well as overseas. In the Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD 2006(UK) she is described as ‘Australia’s first lady of jazz singing’ and equally revered in the cabaret world. New York’s Cabaret Hotline stated, “I had heard so much about this delightful star from Australia, but I was still not prepared for this awesome performance. I have never been so thrilled by a performer since Barb Jungr – this lady is amazing – such pure clean vocals!”

Janet has been performing jazz oriented material since her high school and university days in the 1970s, has had the fortune of performing alongside Australia’s best jazz musicians, and has travelled the world wowing audiences throughout with her extraordinary talent. Now she brings her Trio (including David Seidel on double bass and Chuck Morgan on guitar) to the Upper Hunter for one performance only at Muswellbrook South PS Hall.

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the Janet Seidel Trio perform on Saturday 23 February at 7:30pm at Muswellbrook South PS Hall.

Tickets are on sale now. To book your seats, please call the UHCM on 6541 4888. (Adults $25 and concessions $15.)

The Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music is very pleased to announce Janet Seidel, hailed as Australia’s first lady of jazz singing, will soon visit the Upper Hunter for one concert only on Saturday 23 February.

High Quality Photography – A Sign of the TimesArtistic collectors should focus their acquisitions on high quality Australian and world photography – this is the belief of Michael Reid, owner of Michael Reid Art Gallery in Murrurundi. With the emerging largely dominated world of technology, irrespective of where people live and how wealthy they are, all people are predicted to have access to a communication device with the ability to take photographs and films within the next five years.

According to Mr Reid, we are all photographers and the more that is bad photography makes those photographs that are important sparkle and float to the top to realise true appreciation by photographers and artists.

“Collecting the best of Australian and international photography needs to be taken far more seriously, we need to isolate the key Australian images from the best photographers and acquire them before a slumbering market really wakes up.”

A top tip is to stay highly focused on acquiring key images – those that provide the viewer with a deeper understanding of the individual’s entire body of work.

For more information or to view some quality photographs visit Michael Reid’s Gallery in Boyd Street, Murrurundi, visit michaelreid.com.au or contact 6546 6767.

Michael Reid at Murrurundi is open 11am to 5pm Friday through to Sunday.

Medieval CombatThis year the Living History with Horses Association will be honoured to perform during the ‘Festival of the Horse’. A group of diverse individuals brought together by their shared interest in medieval Equestrian Martial Arts such as Mounted Combat, Horsearchery and (full-contact) Jousting. The knights and the local branch Napoleonic Cavalry (known as the Hussars) will be participating in the Saturday parade. The knights will be wearing authentic armour reproductions representing their fourteenth century time period, and their horses will be decorated with medieval caparisons proudly showing their coat of arms. The Hussars will present the ‘D Troop Kings Light Dragoons’, and the riders and horses will shine in their magnificent regency uniforms including their famous silver sabers.

The members of ‘Steppenwolf-Horsearcher of the Steppe’ will be delivering a thirty minute display introducing the practice of horse archery to the interested public. Here the history of mounted archery and its diverse forms in modern sports will be discussed. The audience will be shown typical equipment, and experience a horse and novice rider being introduced to this exciting competitive sport.

In a separate performance, audiences will also be treated to the ‘Household of the Green Knight’ who will deliver a thirty minute display showcasing a tournament. This will include the training of squires, the fierce foot combat of armoured fighters, and a ridden skill at arms display with sharp weapons such as swords and spears. The finale will feature a full-contact jousting tournament between two knights which will conclude with a ceremony and a chance to meet and greet the human and equine performers.

The Living History with Horses Association has members all over the world. Each year they spend dozens of days in the saddle participating in public displays at international tournaments in front of up to 20,000 people. The members also deliver medieval talks and tournaments, and contribute to events like birthdays and weddings as well as community events. Interested horse people are invited to join for a probationary period.

Please contact us at [email protected] or find us on Facebook under ‘Living History for Horses’ for any inquiries you might have.

Breeder has 150 Years Hunter Heritage By Brian Russell

Octogenarian Alan Harris, owner with wife Madge and horsewoman daughter Julie, of Holbrook Thoroughbreds, the breeders of Everage, the Zizou filly who was running for the second time when a promising winner of the juvenile event at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, has been involved in breeding in the Hunter Valley all his life.

The Quiet One

The breeding farm Holbrook Thoroughbreds, a major professional agistment operation bordered by the Pages river close to the Arrowfield stud in the Scone district, gets its name from the Holbrook stud and grazing holding established at the far end of the famous Widden Valley by Alan Harris’s paternal ancestors over 150 years ago.

The pioneers of the family struggled through the rugged Nullo Mountain ranges from the Rylestone region in central western NSW to settle in the fertile Widden Valley about the same time that the Thompsons took up much of lower country. Now in the seventh generation, the Thompsons have been there ever since and conduct one of the world’s best known horse breeding farms, the Widden stud.

Alan Harris and his brother John each spent nearly seventy years at the now sold off Holbrook stud and oversaw a very

successful era when they stood the very good imported sire Persian Book. Two of his progeny were the brothers Prince Darius and Persian Lyric, both marvelous gallopers but out in an era overshadowed by the deeds of Tulloch and Todman.

An outstanding performer bred by the Harris family not long before Alan was born was Easingwold, a winner in the west of many good races, including the Derby and St Leger, and in Melbourne of the second running of the Cox Plate - after being runner up in the first, the St George Stakes and two renewals of the Herbert Power. A son of the Holbrook stud imported sire Eaton Lad, he was second in the1923 Caulfield Cup.

Since Alan, Madge and Julie Harris moved to the Scone district in1998 they have bred a number of good horses for themselves and clients. One national heroine produced for NSW north coast breeder David Parker

was Hot Danish, while other good class performers have included Utzon, Snitzem, Ranger, New Image, Dreamway and another current 2-year-old,Trichologist.

A representative of the first of two Australian crops by the prematurely deceased Widden stud shuttled War Pass, Trichologist has raced twice in Perth for a win and a second. He is also from a Holbrook Thoroughbreds mare and like Everage was sold at the Inglis Classic sale for $20,000.

Their latest success, Everage, is the product of the mating at nearby Turangga stud of the Fusaichi Pegasus Golden Slipper and Blue Diamond Stakes second Zizou and Quipster, a Snippets mare whose eight starts included a win at Gawler and a Listed fourth in Adelaide. She was bred and raced by Brian Agnew, a breeding industry leader for a decade when he owned the Wakefield stud, now Newgate Farm, at Scone.

However, many of these diets can leave you feeling hungry and slow down your metabolism, making you more likely to suffer from rebound weight gain. This is because these diets frequently focus on low fat foods which are often higher in sugar or carbohydrates and low in protein. You may register weight loss on the scales, but be losing valuable muscle rather than fat. It is important to ensure good muscle mass is maintained during weight loss, as this will promote healthy metabolism and enable you to keep the fat off long term without that rebound.

Your Practitioner can provide professional advice to overcome your obstacles to weight loss.

As well as the support and guidance you will receive, they will monitor your weight loss progress until you achieve your goals and even help celebrate your successes.

New enthusiasm and passion has taken over the Royal Hotel in Scone, but the drivers are familiar faces to local patrons. Ian and Karen Campbell are the new licensees of the popular Scone hotel and are keen to make the Royal the best in town.

Since taking over in October last year, Ian and Karen are using their thirty years of experience to work towards a goal of offering people a family hotel with good, well-priced food and a friendly place to meet family, friends and new acquaintances.

The Royal offers budget style accommodation from a clean and tidy motel to clean and tidy hotel style options.

With new chef John Spackman on board the food is sure to be tempting as John has chefed in restaurants and hotels right across Australia.

Meals vary from $10 lunch menus and $12 dinner specials through to fresh seafood platters and more on weekends, and the team at the Royal will cater for any functions desired by the customer.

Recent renovations have seen the addition of a function/meeting room catering for up to twenty people, which is open for use by all.

The Royal Hotel in Scone is open seven days a week with the bistro available each day for lunch and dinner and offers pub tab, keno, kids games, pool table, juke box, a great all-weather beer garden, lounges, cold beer and a friendly atmosphere for their valued customers.

Mr Campbell said they aim to offer good, friendly service through great staff they have working with them to achieve their goals.

He said the hotel is now also more family friendly.

“We have also changed our areas in the hotel that children can use, these areas are restricted from the main bar and gaming room of the hotel.”
