Business Case Competition 2012 3

Welcome to 2012 University of Toronto Business Case Competition!

Coming into its 7th year, the Business Case Competition held by UTCA has become an annual tradition during which students interested in manage-ment consulting gain first-hand experience of working in a team under time pressure and delivering strategies to an actual business case.

One of the most important skills in business world is negotiation. For this reason we have picked Acumen Fund and Embrace as this year’s case, not only because it challenges you to evaluate an investment from the perspec-tives of both parties, but it also provides a platform for you to showcase your creativity in generating innovative financial strategies. We hope that in working through the case, you have gained insights into the decision-mak-ing process of a real-world business situation.

The University of Toronto Business Case Competition is intended to be a fast-paced and valuable learning experience. We hope that you can draw from the knowledge you have gained in taking part in this year’s competi-tion to realize your strengths and have the confidence to pursue other chal-lenges in the future.

Finally, we would like to acknowledge our sponsors and partners for 2011/2012: Deloitte Strategy & Operation, Accenture, McKinsey & Com-pany, University of Toronto MIE Depoartment, Skule, and Skule Alumni, Rotman Commerce, Case in Point, as well as all participating judges and volunteers who helped to make this year’s competition a success.

We hope you enjoy the competition, and good luck!

Sincerely,

2011 - 2012 UTCA Executive Team

Is it the Career for You?In the business world, consulting can be considered as giving advice for pay. It can be internal (to a single company), or external (to outside clients). A consultant is a professional who provides knowledge and services in a certain area of expertise. Consulting firms are usually classified as manage-ment consultancies or information technology (IT) consultancies. Strategy consulting aims to help companies improve performance either through improving current practices or developing future plans, whereas IT consult-ing focuses on advising clients on how to best use technology to meet their business objectives.

There are several different areas of expertise that consulting firms provide:

• Technology implementation/deployment/administration

• Outsourcing

• Human Resources (HR)

• Finance

• Strategy

• Operations

Similarly, some consulting firms may choose to concentrate on specific industry areas, such as:

• Non-Profit or Public sector (Government)

• Financial Institutions

• Retail Operations

• Pharmaceuticals

• Telecommunications

• Energy

Consulting covers a broad range of expertise and areas of industry. As a re-sult, consulting firms are looking for people from all types of backgrounds to fill the needs of their clients.
