Introduction

This manual is your guide to drill adjustments for achiev-ing specific seed population targets. Although some setup/adjustment material herein is repeated from the Operator’s Manual, you need to be thoroughly familiar with drill operations and adjustments before applying this Seed Rate manual and its table data.

This manual relies on information found only in your Operator’s Manual. Have both available when preparing to plant.

Setting Planting RateThere are six steps to obtaining the desired number of seeds per acre:

1. Know the characteristics of the seed.Consult your seed supplier’s reference documents.

2. Find your settings in the Seed Cup rate charts start-ing on on page 4.

3. Set the Drive Type.See “Setting Drive Type” on page 2.

4. Set the Seed Rate Handle.See “Set Seed Rate Handle” on page 3.

5. Adjust Seed Cup doors for the seed.See “Position Seed Cup Doors” on page 3.

6. Check planting rate.See “Checking Seed Cup Rate” on page 10.

The charts are based on original factory tires, and cleaned, untreated seed of average size and test weight. Many factors will affect field results, including field condi-tions, foreign material, seed size, seed treatment and tire pressure.

Minor adjustments are likely to be needed.

Setting Drive TypeDrive type is a ground drive sprocket combination that must be mounted identically on both gauge wheel assemblies.

Before setting the drive type, rotate the gauge wheels. Check that seed cups, seed tubes and drives are work-ing properly and free from foreign material.

Select the drive type from the seed rate charts. The drive type varies by seed type and intended population.

Refer to Figure 11. Find your drive type in the seed rate charts of this

manual.

2. Find the drive type sprocket pair required in the table at the bottom of this page.

3. Loosen idlers and remove chain .

4. Remove retaining pins from shafts.

5. From the sprockets in use and those on the storage tree , select the required pair. Sprockets are iden-tified by tooth count, which is stamped into the side of the sprocket.

6. Install the DRIVING sprocket on shaft and the DRIVEN sprocket on shaft .

Note: Make sure the correct sprockets have been in-stalled in the DRIVER and DRIVEN locations as shown.

7. Replace unused sprockets back on the storage tree .

8. Re-pin all shafts.

9. Re-mount the chain , engage the idlers , and tighten the idlers until there is 14in slack in the lon-gest span.

10. Set the same drive type sprocket combination on the other gauge wheel assembly.

Note: Each gauge wheel drives its half of the drill. If a chain breaks or is removed, that half of the drill does not plant.

Set Seed Rate HandleThere are identical seed rate handles for each half of the drill. Generally, both need to be set identically. You can stop seed flow to one half of the drill by setting a handle to zero (for point-row planting, for example).

The seed rate handle controls the percent engagement of the seed sprocket in each seed cup.

1. Loosen wing nut under handle.

2. Set indicator to just past value from seed rate chart.

3. Tighten wing nut.

Position Seed Cup DoorsRefer to Figure 3, which depicts the seed cup door handle in position .

At each seed box seed tube, adjust the seed cup door handle for the seed size.

The handle has three normal operating position detents:

(top detent) is for the smallest seeds.Use it for wheat and similar small seeds.

(middle detent) is for larger seeds.Use it for soybeans and similar larger seeds.

(bottom detent) is for oversize or fragile seeds. If you experience excessive cracking with setting , use set-ting .

Note: Handle position is used for cleanout, not plant-ing. If set to this position with seed loaded, it may be difficult to reset it to a normal operating position.

Seed Cup Rate Charts

Seed cup planting rate is determined by:

• Crop and seed variant• Drive Type sprockets• Seed Cup sprocket engagement (Seed Rate Handle)

The are no other adjustments.

The rates indicated in the charts are approximate values. To assure the most accurate seeding rate it is recommended that the drill be calibrated for the desired seed at the time of planting.

Reading a Seed Cup Rate Chart

These charts are estimations of maximum seed rates. Actual results will vary based on conditions and machine maintenance. Maintain your machine regularly for optimum performance.

1. Find the table for your seed;for example:Barley.

For some seeds, there may be multiple tables, allowing a wider range of populations.

2. Find the table row for your row spacing;for example:38in Twin Row.

3. Find your target seed rate(which is pounds per acre); for example:11 pounds per acre.

4. The Drive Type is shown in the top row for that col-umn. The Seed Rate Handle setting is shown in the second row for that column;in this example:Drive Type: 2Seed Rate Handle: 25

Checking Seed Cup RateThe seed charts are based on cleaned seed and original factory-supplied tires. Factors including foreign material, seed treatment, seed size, seed weight, field conditions and tire pressure will affect seeding rate. Set and check the seeding rate, then readjust the rate as necessary.

1. Record the weight of an empty container large enough to hold seed for one acre.

2. Place several pounds of seed over three seed cups on an outside end of the drill box.

Note: If drill box is full, shut off seed cup doors for rows not being measured.

3. Raise drill off ground.

4. Turn gauge wheel a few turns to fill seed cups with seed and until seed drops to ground from all three cups.

5. Place a container under the three rows to gather seed as it is metered.

6. Using the chart on the next page, select your row spacing and determine the correct number of revolu-tions per acre. Turn drive gauge wheel the selected revolutions for your row spacing. Check in box to make sure seed tubes have plenty of seed covering them.

7. Weigh measured seed. Subtract initial weight of empty container. Divide by three for the amount metered by each cup, then multiply by the number of rows for the pounds-per-acre seeding rate.

8. If seeding rate is substantially different than desired:

• Re-check Drive Type required and actual sprocket combination mounted.• Re-check Seed Cup Handle setting required and actual setting made.• Re-check seed cup door setting.• Check for seed cup malfunction.• Check that all three rows are getting seed.• Refer to Troubleshooting in the operator’s manual.

9. If seeding rate is only slightly different than desired, check items in step 8, and if no trouble found, adjust seed rate handle to next higher or lower setting. Ver-ify adjustment.

10. Repeat calibration for other side of drill.
