Sale Locations and Directions: Take Drummond Exit 154 off Interstate 90 then take Montana Highway 1 south 6.5 miles to Hall. Turn west in Hall and go 1.5 miles on paved road to ranch on the right side of road.

Retained ownership: Skinner Ranch Seedstock is retaining 1/3 revenue sharing interest on all bulls, unless otherwise stated. Full possession and salvage value sell on all bulls.

Terms and Conditions: Cattle sell under terms and conditions of the American Angus Association and the American Salers Association.

Payment for Bulls: Full payment is due sale day unless prior arrangements have been made.

Bull Development: The bulls are developed on a high roughage ration to insure long term soundness and longevity.

Fertility and Soundness: All bulls will be fertility and soundness examined by sale day. Scrotal circumferences will be available sale day.

Herd Health: All bulls and the entire cow herd were tested and are negative for persistent BVD infection. The bulls are vaccinated with Pyramid 5, VibrioLepto plus Hardjo Bovis, Vision 8/Somnus, foot rot vaccine and Nasalgen.

AM, NH, CA, M1, OH and DD: All cattle with AM, NH, CA or OH or potential by pedigree have been DNA tested free. All bulls with potential DD pedigrees have been tested and are free from Developmental Duplication.The entire SRS cow herd and all sires have been tested free of the Myostatin gene (M1).

Performance Data: All current performance data, including yearling data, will be available on sale day.

Angus EPDs are current as of 1/22/16. Updated EPDs can be viewed at www.angus.org.

Frame Scores: Frame scores will be available sale day.

Liability: People attending the sale do so at their own risk and responsibility without liability on the part of the ranch owner or employees.

Delivery: $50 discount on all bulls picked up within 5 days of the sale in MT (Due to Health requirements on out of state bulls it will take longer to get them ready to travel). Bulls will start to be delivered after March 1st. Free delivery on bulls within 500 miles on purchases over $4,000. The balance of the distance will be at cost.

Volume Discounts: A 5% discount will be given on purchases of five or more bulls.

Loyalty Discount: A 5% discount will be given to loyal customers that have purchased bulls in each of the last two sales (December 2013 and February 2015).

Dear Cattlemen,

Welcome to the 2016 Skinner Ranch Seedstock’s 29th annual bull sale. We would like to thank all the previous buyers and bidders that had the confidence in our program to make our sales and program a success and allow us to move forward. A very big thank you to our friends and neighbors who help the sale run smoothly. We would not be able to do it without you.

We would like also to thank those who were so supportive of our fall 2015 Female sale that brought a large crowd and great prices.

The last year certainly had its trials and tribulations. We had a dry summer here with little to no rain from March until September. Fortunately, we live in an area where we have three reservoirs that store water and we were able to put up a hay crop that was very close to average. We also had quite an infestation of grasshoppers that took 90% of our native rangeland which we largely use for fall feed. However, with some long hours and persistence we kept our bottom ground wet and growing. In preparation for a shortage of fall feed every calf on the place was weaned by the first of September. With these two management strategies and the help of some good bull customers and friends we were able to get to the first of December without putting too much hay through our cows.

Last year we moved our bull sale to the end of February. There was a learning curve, but we felt that it went well. Being able to sell bulls that we knew and our customers knew were ready to go out and breed, took some stress off of all parties involved. By having our bull sale in February the bulls are more mature and developed out (They will be semen tested with scrotal measurements and 365 day weights). There is less chances of losing bulls to injury or other things from time of purchase to delivery. Do keep in mind they are like a bunch of high school football players and like to play at nights after they eat and sometimes they get a little rough and someone gets hurt. We felt the changes are positive and will outweigh any disadvantages the timing may cause anyone.

The sale will again be on Superior with the video there for you to watch and bid on if you cannot attend. Many who were unable to attend and were on the phones in the past, have switched over to bidding on the internet and feel comfortable with that. The phones will still be available if you desire. The information for Superior will be on page 3 of the catalog. Please call us for help if you need it, to bid or to get registered with Superior. You can come and go through the bulls ahead of time to evaluate them if you would like to. Please call us if you have any questions about the bulls or buying procedure.

We had Thanksgiving at the ranch this year and all the family and grand children were here. It is starting to be quite a house full with the way they are all growing so fast. Each one is a special person and a lot of fun. What a great day.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS

Turn in Bids Over the Phone. This is our traditional method of buying livestock and is the suggested process for anyone who does not have consistent, high-speed internet. To get started simply go online to www.superiorlivestock.com and click on the tab titled “Register for a Buyer Number”. Select the registration form for Superior Productions and print the registration form. Fill it out and fax it in to Superior Productions at (817) 378-3380 with a signature on it. You can also mail it in to the address provided on the form. Upon receipt of this information Superior will call you with a buyer’s number and the bid line phone number that you will use on sale day to place bids over the phone.

Click-To-Bid. This is Superior’s online bidding program for cattle buying. Please note that high speed internet is required – this is not for dial-up or satellite internet. Registration is free, but you must become a member of www.superiorclicktobid.com to sign up. Becoming a member is easy – just go to the homepage of www.superiorclicktobid.com and follow the out-lined steps to get started. Input your information and select a username and password. You will receive an e-mail confirming you are a member. From that point forward you just have to sign in and select the sale you would like to register for and once approved by the ranch you will receive an e-mail confirming which sale you are now registered for.

Viewing the Auction. The sale will be broadcast via satellite on Dish Network channel 998. Please note that there is a delay if you are watching the auction on television so be sure to call in a couple lots ahead of the lot you are interested in bidding on. The sale will also be broadcast live on the internet at both www.superiorlivestock.com and www.superiorclicktobid.com. The video feed on the homepage of www.superiorlivestock.com looks the same as the video feed on TV and can be watched over a smartphone or tablet. Remember you can call in to bid whether watching on the TV or on the internet, but you must be a member of www.superiorclicktobid.com to “click-to-bid”.

Driving the science of better breedingThere’s little room for error in the cattle business. Producers need the most advanced information to make smart selection decisions, and Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) provides it through genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs).

GE-EPDs have become the industry standard for herd improvement, building on decades of science-backed genetic evaluation tools originated and maintained through the American Angus Association®, home to the largest and ever-growing single-breed beef cattle database.

EPDs that traditionally contained all pedigree, performance and progeny information now also include results from available genomic, or DNA, tests. Breeders who use genomic technology give buyers access to AGI-generated GE-EPDs that provide:

Increased predictability and decreased risk for young and unproven animals due to enhanced accuracy of EPDs

Better characterization of genetics for difficult-to-measure performance traits (such as carcass traits, maternal traits and feed efficiency)

The ability to make more rapid progress for traits that are important to you, due to:· more accurate selection· easier identification of genetic outliers· the ability to propagate young animals with confidence earlier in their lives

SRS Genetics ExcelWe have often talked about the shipping weight on the bottom 40% of our bulls which are steered at 205 days. These

are the calves that are lower performing, have bigger birthweights, or we feel simply don’t have the phenotype to make a good bull. The average weight on our steers when they were shipped on October 23 this year was 710 pounds. These cows typically run in mountain pasture for much of the summer.

We don’t often convey, however, what the weights of our customer’s calves are. Here are the 2015 shipping weights on just a few of our customer’s calves in which all but two have been buying cows out of our female sale and all are using SRS bulls. These are all February, March, or April calvers with most all of them shipping in October.

While the last two years have seen little difference in total price for calves regardless of weight, this is not and will not continue to be the standard. Economists and experts predict that it is more important in the next few years to buy high quality genetics to improve your herd as there will be more value and profit in top quality cattle.

Yet that is only part of the equation as fertility is just as important in making a profit in the cattle business. SRS cattle are bred for fertility as well as we require our females to breed in two cycles instead of the standard three. Out of 153 bred heifers this year, the toughest year on record for us (with little and very dry feed) 152 came in bred. It is certainly important to note that these heifers never see concentrates in their life, they are only fed long stem hay! Additionally, we consistently receive comments from our customers buying females that they do not lose any first calf heifers the first year after buying bred heifers out of our female sale. SRS genetics can and will excel for you in your environment, they will raise big calves and the cows will come back in bred, and work for you for years to come.

What it takes to be an SRS donorWe have been utilizing embryo transfer for many

years to increase the numbers and quality of cattle for our customers. So what do we look for in a donor? There is a long list of hurdles that she must first get over. First, we pick older proven females; we would like to have at least four to five calves out of a cow before we start flushing her. This gives us the ability to make sure she has the performance and predictability that is essential. We typically will pick females that have high ratios on all of their calves, but we will use some cattle that are closer to a hundred, if they have consistently raised light birth weight calves.

Obviously, the next thing is phenotype; at Skinner Ranch we have a very specific phenotype that we look for and that cow simply has to fit that “mold”. We don’t care what breeding, or breed she is; we are looking for a long cow with thickness, fleshing ability, good feet, and a good disposition. We also are very critical on udders. We select females that have balanced udders with flat bottoms, good teat placement, and small teats. Overall, we want to pick out females and build cattle with balance, we will not sacrifice udder quality for a high IMF ratio, or give up good feet for performance. We will always breed sound, functional cattle that are labor efficient so that our genetics work for you and you don’t work for them.

The idea is to proliferate top cattle; by making sure we use cattle with many of the aforementioned traits, therefore we don’t have to worry about culling out a bunch of cattle for bad udders, or bad feet down the road. This gives you confidence that these bulls will work for you. Not every mating goes as planned; you still have to pick out sires that you believe will enhance and continue these traits. We spend countless hours on the road and researching different herd sire potentials, we like to see bulls’ mothers, their offspring and how they are doing in different herds across the northwest. We talk to different breeders, breed representatives, and people that see different herds on a regular basis to get an idea of what cattle may fit our “mold.”

Donors in our program are both raised and bought. The cows we buy are cows with proven production in another herd. They are then brought here to prove themselves in our program. Our experience with these hand-picked, proven cows is that a little under 50% will actually make our donor program.

Flushing a young unproven female with big EPDs without proving herself and her production is not sound genetic planning. Any person with a calculator and computer can breed for numbers. We select and breed for balanced, functional cattle that work in the “real world”. “Real world” cattle must be able to climb a mountain and travel lots of miles for forage, while bringing home a big calf and breeding back.

This is our passion and while it can be extremely frustrating it can also be very rewarding when you can put a top set of cattle together for the sale and feel good about offering them to the public. You can expect us to continue to seek out genetics that will move us forward and keep on the forefront of the industry so that you can buy cattle here that will move you forward with confidence.
