    Seeing the Difference Between Plagiarism and Academic Honesty (APA Style!)

    Original Material (from a book):The association between humans and dogs began as a hunting relationship before organized agriculture had been

    developed. This Paleolithic cave painting dates back to about ten thousand years ago and shows a Stone Age hunterwho has successfully killed an eland with the assistance of his dogs.

    Plagiarism by Direct Copying:Dogs have been mans best friend since long before recorded history. The

    association between humans and dogs began as a hunting relationship before

    organized agriculture had been developed. One Paleolithic cave painting dates

    back about ten thousand years ago and shows a Stone Age hunter who has

    successfully killed an eland with the assistance of his dogs.

    Explanation:In the second sentence in the paragraph, the student has typed in Corens words

    exactly. In the third sentence in the paragraph he has altered only one word.

    Explanation:The student has rearranged a few words and substituted a few of her own words,

    but the idea and the order of development are the original authors.

    Academic Honesty (NO Plagiarism):Dogs have been mans best friend since long before recorded

    history. A ten thousand year-old cave painting shows a man

    hunting with his dogs (Coren, 1994, p. 150). This proves that

    the association between men and dogs began as a hunting

    relationship (Coren, 1994, p. 150).

    Explanation:

    The first sentence is the students ideas in her own words. In the

    second sentence the student has paraphrased AND cited her

    source. In the third sentence the student has accurately quoted

    and cited her source, using APA citation format.
