Segmented TurningBy Jerry Holbrook

Glue up center piece using contrast pieces of wood

Select piece of wood to be fitted and glued around centerpiece

Run selected piece thru jointer to true up faces

Plane selected piece to desired uniform thickness

Set saw blade cut to 45 Deg.

Using center piece, mark cut for 45 deg. cuts

Cut 4 pieces for exact fit around center piece

Place 45 deg. Cut pieces edge to edge, using masking tape to hold secure while glueing to center piece and clamp

Mark off a circle equal to a 4” forstnerbit on top of block so so a cylinder can be cut on the band saw.

Cut cylinder

Glue (2) blocks of 7” square contrasting color woods together

Drill 4” dia. Hole in center of glued contrasting blocks.

Cylinder and contrasting block glue up.

Mount cylinder in lathe and turn to fit hole in contrasting block glue-up.

Glue pieces together and remount on lathe. Set back cylinder from face to receive chuck for turning.

Turn desired shape and saw top off leaving a tenon for reattaching to the lathe at a later point

Cut pieces

Turn inside of top and turn edge to fit bottom.

Turn base leaving edge room for top to fit.

Firmly tape top to bottom & complete turning of box top.

Prepare to finish pieces
