The U.S. health care system of the twenty-first century will beinformation driven; allied health literature will be a dynamic part ofthat information. The updated list of allied health books and journalsthat follows has been compiled to serve as a selectionguide for academic and health sciences librarians whoneed to acquire publications in various disciplinesthat make up the overall conglomerate of allied health, but who are unfamiliar with the literature. Our initialtarget audience back in 1984 was academic librarians, especially in junior colleges, whose parent institu-tions were in the process of setting up allied healthprograms. lied health," we would choose. The choices rangedfrom hospital orderly to medical librarian to physi-cian assistant. What we did initially and still do is try to put to-

gether a list of allied health books and journals thatwould support the twenty-eight educational pro-grams accredited by the American Medical Associa-tion (AMA) Committee on Allied Health Educationand Accreditation (CAHEA), which are described inthe Allied Health Education Directory [1]. Besides theseprograms, we have also reviewed the literature ofallied health dental personnel (dental hygiene anddental assisting), physical therapy, speech patholo-gy /audiology, medical secretary, and nutrition. Thesedisciplines have large numbers of educational pro-grams; some are accredited by their own professionalorganizations. Since we have not been able to locatea definition of "allied health" upon which there is aconsensus of opinion, we continue to use the one thatappears in the Allied Health Education Directory: ". . . alarge cluster of health-related personnel who fulfillnecessary roles in the healthcare system, includingassisting, facilitating, and complementing the workof physicians and other healthcare specialists" [2].While it is common knowledge that the U.S. health

care system is undergoing its most dramatic upheavalpolitically and financially, it is perhaps less knownthat the education of the health care professional isin comparable upheaval, with allied health being lit-erally on the firing line. Already, allied health ac-creditation faces major changes. After more than sixtyyears of playing a leadership role in allied health andits accreditation process, in October 1992, the AMAannounced plans to discontinue the sponsorship ofCAHEA, effective October 1994. The AMA formed atask force to plan a freestanding agency to take overthe accreditation role. The task force presented guide-lines for an organization that it proposed to be calledthe Council on Accreditation of Allied Health Edu-cation Programs (CAAHEP); in its developmental pe-riod, the AMA plans to assist financially. In makingits decision, the AMA felt that the allied health pro-fessions had matured and had earned more autono-my. Allied health accreditation costs the AMA about$500,000 annually [3-4]. The immediate question is,who will join CAAHEP and who will opt for orga-nizational accreditation? Many allied health profes-sionals who work closely with physicians are con-cerned about losing the AMA relationship.Obviously, there is much debate within the allied

health community. A feeling seems to prevail thatcurrent accreditation is not outcome-oriented but in-stead encourages standardization, conformity, and thestatus quo, actually being an end unto itself-a veryexpensive end. For a long time, topics such as spe-cialized versus institutional accreditation, fixed cur-riculum versus innovative curriculum, self-study ver-

sus assessment, or segmentation versus coordinationhave all been debated. The realistic goal for alliedhealth now is moving from monitoring program pro-cesses to assessing program outcomes, whereby a us-able, unencumbered accreditation model can be setforth for other health professional schools to follow[5-8].Changing the education of the health professional

to meet the needs of the population is the premiseupon which the prestigious Pew Health ProfessionsCommission hopes to reform the U.S. health care sys-tem. The commission's twenty-seven experts drawnfrom the health professional, business, academic, andpolicy-making communities represent both the pub-lic and the private sectors. Its parent organization, the Pew Charitable Trusts, is a national philanthropybased in Philadelphia, but the commission is admin-istered through the Duke University Medical Centerin Durham, North Carolina.

In its first report, Healthy America: Practitioners for2005, the commission makes it very clear that reor-ganizing and refinancing the health care system willnot, regardless of what politicians believe, be suffi-cient to confront the nation's health care needs [9].The purpose of the Pew Commission is to help healthprofessional schools respond effectively to the changesin a health care system based upon needs of the pop-ulation. At present, the education of health care per-sonnel is clearly out of step with societal needs.Changing the values, skills, and attitudes of eightmillion health care workers, three million of whomare allied health personnel, is a gargantuan task. Thecommission's vision of a system of health care for thetwenty-first century can be described as being ori-ented to health and to individual responsibility forhealth-related behaviors. Other aspects include a sys-tem that is population based, information driven, fo-cused on consumers, and based on outcomes. It willprovide integrated or coordinated teams of healthcare givers, balanced technology with nontechnicalintervention, and increased accountability to con-sumers and society [10-11]. The implications for therole of allied health personnel in the present andfuture is further clarified by the Advisory Panel forAllied Health of the Pew Health Professions Com-mission [12]. In its report, the panel pointed out thesevere shortage of allied health workers in view ofthe demands of the aging society, the AIDS crisis, thewellness movement, the growth of home care, andchronic care for people with disabilities will chal-lenge allied health's ability to respond to the ever-increasing demands. Many of the trends noted in thecommission's report are of major consequences to al-lied health. The panel further stated that competen-cies that the Pew Commission has set forth, such ascaring for the community's health, participating incoordinated care, promoting healthy lifestyles, and

participating in a racially and culturally diverse so-ciety, have been important to allied health workersfor many years; these trends are not new to alliedhealth as they may be to other health professions. The allied health personnel shortage was document-ed in 1989 in the report of the Institute of MedicineCommittee to Study the Role of Allied Health Per-sonnel [13].

Traditionally, allied health workers have been re-garded as being on the periphery of the health caresystem, where they assist, facilitate, and complementthe work of others. The literature of allied health hasusually held a comparable place in health scienceslibraries. It appears today that many allied healthprofessions and occupations will no longer be on theperiphery of the action but very well may becomethe core of the new health care delivery system. Arehealth sciences librarians ready to support such shifts? Will collection development priorities extend to theliterature of allied health? Considering the fact thatsome libraries are abandoning or trying to abandonprint publications of all kinds, it is a difficult questionto answer!

After reviewing the allied health literature for thepast two years, we know that the book literature isespecially strong, and many journals are taking on amore professional stance than they have in the past.In fact, we have seen a tremendous pride on the partof several publishers regarding their allied healthpublications, and they have stated the belief that al-lied health is the wave of the future in health sciencespublishing. But even with the expansion of alliedhealth publications, it is still true that a distinct lit-erature for some allied health programs does not ex-ist. Educational programs for the physician assistantrely heavily upon books in the basic and behavioralsciences as well as standard medical texts and jour-nals; medical publications can be identified from ourlist of recommended books and journals for the smallmedical library [14]. Physician assistant programs alsomake use of publications in related allied health fields.A similar situation exists for surgeon's assistants andsurgical technologists programs; they are supportedheavily by the literature of perioperative nursing aswell as a variety of surgical publications. Periopera-tive nursing publications can be located in our se-lected list of nursing literature [15]. Publications deal-ing with gerontology and geriatrics are listed underour established subject headings; for example, a bookon nutrition for the elderly is grouped with otherbooks on nutrition. The section of our nursing listdealing with geriatric nursing would be of value toallied health personnel caring for the elderly; geri-atric nursing journals are also noted. As yet, we havenot reviewed literature on long-term care, but be-cause of the importance of the subject, we plan to dothat in the next updated nursing list.

We have added one new subject category, "AthleticTrainer," to this list; the program was accredited byCAHEA in 1990. Subject sections from this list cov-ering anatomy and physiology, physical therapy, andrehabilitation would also be relevant to the athletictrainer program. We have changed the subject head-ing "Medical Records" to "Patient Records."

Subject-oriented "word books" for medical tran-scriptionists do not appear in the "Terminology" sec-tion of the book list. However, there are two suchseries that we would recommend if this type of pub-lication is needed: the first is Springhouse Word BookSeries (Springhouse Corporation) and the second,Stedman's ... Words; for example, Stedman's Neurosur-gery Words or Stedman's Radiology Words (Williams &Wilkins). With one or two exceptions, association mono-

graphic publications have not been included in thebook list, but we do want to emphasize their impor-tance in developing allied health collections. Cata-logs and brochures are available from the AmericanAssociation of Blood Banks, American Health Infor-mation Management Association, American Occu-pational Therapy Association, American PhysicalTherapy Association, and American Society for Mi-crobiology.

Self-study books are appearing in the allied healthliterature with increasing frequency, and we havecited a number of them in the book list. Anyonewanting to locate more should contact publishers suchas Appleton & Lange, Brady (Prentice Hall), Delmar,Mosby, and Saunders. These books are used exten-sively in allied health programs as teaching tools, andtheir quality has improved steadily over the years. We have selected books and journals focused spe-

cifically on allied health, but if a medical text or jour-nal is an integral part of the literature of an alliedhealth discipline, it has been included. We have em-phasized current books, predominantly of U.S. origin, although some Canadian and a few British publica-tions have been included. All the books have beenpublished since 1989: 98% since 1990 and 74% since1992; only 2% were published in 1989. We have cho-sen the most current books available, because rapidlychanging technology has a strong impact on manyallied health professions and occupations. As a result, older books do not appear in this list that might haveappeared in earlier versions. We are aware that "new"does not always mean "better."

In updating this list, we have received input fromlibrarians, health sciences educators, publishers, andbook and journal vendors. The final decision on whichbooks and journals to include in the list that followsis ours, based upon our experience and the publica-tions themselves. We have tried to choose books thatare authoritative in their fields, well organized, ef-fectively indexed, readable, and used by educators in

allied health. In some allied health areas, there arefew publications, and it becomes a matter of identi-fying rather than choosing. This situation is especial-ly true for journals, although, in some instances, anallied health discipline is covered by only one or twobooks. Of all the allied health books thatwe reviewed, the largest increase in titles that we saw was in speechpathology/audiology. Making choices in this cate-gory was very difficult. While the quality of journalsis continually improving, their numbers should alsobe increasing as the amount and quality of alliedhealth research increase. We intend that this list of books and journals be

considered only as a guide for developing a collectionof allied health literature; it is not to be used as arequired item-by-item standard. Any publications listis relatively outdated as soon as it is published. There-fore, it is necessary for librarians to monitor the lit-erature of allied health as it is published. Betweenrevisions, this list will be updated on a quarterly basisin a newsletter titled A Major Report compiled andedited by the senior author [16]. Publishers' and ven-dors' listings and newsletters are useful sources formonitoring for current allied health publications.Standard medical books and journals should be

available to allied health personnel; dental auxiliarypersonnel should also have access to standard dentalbooks and journals. If no basic medical or dental col-lections exist in academic libraries supporting alliedhealth education programs, access must be providedby means of neighboring health sciences libraries. The bibliographic and price information quoted

here is as accurate as we could obtain at the time themanuscript was submitted, but price increases arelikely to occur over time. Based upon the prices thatwe have, it would cost approximately $25,300 to pur-chase the entire collection of books and journals. The415 books cost about $18,500, and the 76 journal sub-scriptions for 1994 amount to $6,800. For books frompublishers who have net pricing, we have used a bookvendor's prices, which provide more realistic figuresfor purchasing and budgeting purposes, because mostlibraries purchase directly from vendors. Publishers'list prices are noted for all other books. The total pricefor the entire collection, or for the individual category"Physical Therapy" (Table 1) includes only the spe-cific books cited in items 241, 244, and 253, not theentire series. Subscription prices are institutional rates;sometimes subscription prices for individuals are lessthan for institutions. Whenever member and non-member prices are shown, nonmember prices havebeen used in calculating total costs. The average priceper book title is $44.71, and the average price of a1994 journal subscription is $89.30.Items for initial purchase are indicated by asterisks

before the titles. To purchase only the asterisked items(177 books and 32 journal subscriptions), the total costwould be approximately $10,500-$7,900 for books and$2,600 for 1994 journal subscriptions. Due to the di-versity of the subjects covered in this list, most peoplewill probably not want to purchase all of the publi-cations but instead will use the list selectively forsubjects pertinent to their particular situations. Table1 shows the approximate cost for each subject sectionof the book list. Overall total figures and average costsfor this list are not as meaningful as those that wecompile for the small medical library and for nursing, because it is not likely that all these allied healthpublications would ever be purchased totally as acollection. The books in the list are arranged according to

broad subject headings followed by an author/editorindex. For new editions appearing in 1994, we haveindicated prices if they were available when we sub-mitted the manuscript; if we could not obtain prices,we have used the phrase "in preparation." In in-stances when a new edition will be available at afuture time and the previous edition is still in print,we will list that edition with a note regarding thepreparation of a new one.Over the years, we have found that allied health

books tend to go out of print at a faster rate than

Selected list

medical books; sometimes it is difficult to get thisinformation from publishers when we are compilingthis list. When a book has more than two authors oreditors, the notation "[and others]" is made after thename of the senior author or editor. In the book list,we have tried to indicate the publisher who is cur-rently distributing the book. Because of takeovers andmergers that occur, the publisher shown on the titlepage may not always be the current distributor. Ifbooks are ordered from a vendor, this situation doesnot present a problem. In the author/editor index, only the names of the senior persons are included;coauthors and coeditors are not. If the name of anoriginal author or editor is an initial part of the title,we have included that name in the index. Journalsare arranged by broad subject categories, followed byan alphabetical title list.We believe that it is the responsibility of health

sciences libraries who support no formal educationalprograms in allied health to assist their institutionalallied health personnel in providing quality healthcare by making available to them various avenues ofaccess to knowledge and information that is vital totheir clinical and research needs. One of the best waysto do this is to have an adequate collection of alliedhealth books and journals and librarians who under-stand the informational needs of this large, complexgroup of health care professionals. We hope this listwill serve as a check for librarians who are activelycollecting allied health literature or as a starting pointfor librarians who have not yet dealt with the conceptof an allied health collection being on a comparablelevel with a medical literature collection. Changeneeds to begin for health professionals with a visionof what they ought to be doing that they are not doingnow. Such a vision is likewise necessary in the healthsciences library community.
