    BATTERY RACK SELECTION GUIDE1. General

    EnerSys

offers a complete line of standard and seismic racks designed and built exclusively for EnerSysstationary batteries. As a result, EnerSys is able to provide complete battery systems and ensure that everysystem meets the specifications listed below. Cell restraint equipment is offered for standard racks to provideshock protection. Seismic racks are designed to meet the Uniform Building Code (UBC) or Bellcore NetworkEquipment-Building System (NEBS) requirements.

RACK SPECIFICATIONS Frames: Steel members finished with gray polyester powder coating Rails: Galvanized steel channels or steel channels finished with gray polyester powder coating Rail Insulation: Plastic channel fastened with double-sided adhesive tape Hardware: Zinc-plated steel, RoHS compliant Cell Spacers: Anti-static foam (shockprotected and seismic racks only) Cell Clamps: Steel brackets finished with gray polyester powder coating and steel rods

covered with plastic sheathing (seismic racks only)All shock protected and seismic racks are supplied with anti-static foam spacers and cell clamps to minimizecell damage caused by an earthquake. For additional protection, all racks can be installed with an EnerSys Spill Containment System designed to contain and neutralize electrolyte in the event of a spill (Refer toSection 80.15 for details).

    2. Rack Applications The United States is divided into 6 zones 0, 1, 2A, 2B, 3, 4, per the UBC (see map below) based on the levelof risk and magnitude of the earthquakes that may affect a region. Areas of the country with little or no risk ofearthquakes, such as Florida, are designated Zone 0. Areas of the country with the highest risk andmagnitude of earthquakes, such as California, are designated Zone 4. EnerSys battery racks are available forUBC Zones 0 through 4 and Bellcore Zones 0 through 4.

UBC racks are used for any type of application, e.g., telecom, switchgear and UPS. To be as cost-effective aspossible, EnerSys has divided the seismic zones into two categories: LOW (L) AND HIGH (H). LOW isdefined as essential service at or below grade, and HIGH is defined as essential service above grade.NEBS racks are used specifically for applications that require three painted support rails, and/or compliancewith Bellcore NEBS requirements. (There are no L or H options for NEBS requirements.)

UBC racks come standard with two galvanized support rails per tier/step. Upgrades, where available, havesuffixes added to the UBC rack part number:

    P 2 Painted support rails per tier/step.

3R 3 Galvanized support rails per tier/step.3RP 3 Painted support rails per tier/step.Note: Refer to EnerSys Section US-UBC-IM or US-NEBS-IM for rack installation details and battery room

considerations (e.g. aisle space, floor loading and seismic requirements). 3. Rack AZMS SystemRack specification sheets provide a rack assembly drawing, part numbers, dimensions, weights, and thenumber of cells/units that fit a given length of rack. The rack AZMS System was developed to identify arack, knowing the Application, the seismic Zone, the cell Model, and the rack S tyle.

In addition to specification sheets, the CORE program is a helpful tool to determine the AZMS and rack partnumbers.

The section number on the upper right-hand corner of each specification sheet corresponds to the AZMSnumber. The section number format is Application- Zone- Model- S tyle. For Example: Determine the 2-tier rack with three painted support rails required for (24) parallel GU-45 cells at a New YorkCity location:

1.Use the AZMS table and the UBC seismic map to obtain the AZMS number

    N882,a. Application = N for NEBS (3 support rails, all rails painted)b. Zone = 8 for NEBS Zone 2c. Mode = 8 for GU-45 paralleld. Style = 2 for 2-Tier rack

    2. Use the AZMS number to determine corresponding section number N882 (see Figure 1).3. Use The AZMS number N882 and the chart on the back (Figure 2) of the rack specification sheet to

obtain the rack length needed to hold the specified number of cells/units. Use multiple racks if needed. For (24) GU-45 cells with plates parallel to support rails, a 16 rack is required.

    4. Use this rack length to obtain the rack part number listed on the front side (Figure 1) of the rackspecification sheet. For a 16 rack, the part number is N882-192.
