The tests which the equipment has undergone to receive certification were conducted by TETRON - the network operator – and by the Austrian Ministry of the Interior to ensure that devices deployed in the Austrian Network guarantee trouble-free radio operations for secure voice and data transmission – only certified equipment is permitted for use by BOS organizations. Of particular interest to the Austrian Fire Brigades and Police Foreces is Selex Communication’s Puma T3 ATEX handheld terminals. SELEX Communications PUMA-T3Ex handheld terminal has been designed to be "Intrinsically Safe" according to ATEX standards in order to guarantee operation in potentially explosive environments. The PUMA-T3Ex handheld terminal can operate both as a conventional FM radio, allowing users to communicate both with analogue and TETRA equipment. Engineered for professional users, the PUMA-T3Ex is extremely sturdy, has a large keyboard that is easy to use even when wearing gloves, and thanks to its fluorescent red case is visible in critical light conditions. Thanks to its large loudspeaker and potent amplifier, the Puma-T3Ex allows for communications even in particularly noisy environments, while its well-placed separate small speaker allow it to be used as a regular cell phone. Furthermore, SELEX offers an innovative vehicular TETRA radio which provides the gateway and repeater function in one transceiver. Austria started the roll-out for its “BOS” TETRA network in 2005. Network completion is planned for 2009/2010. After this time, all Austrian blue light organizations will communicate digitally. In Germany, BOS organisations will start also to communicate using TETRA standard digital technology. First radios cells are currently implemented in different German cities and districts . In Austria and in Germany, SELEX Communications’ TETRA equipment will be available to offer a significant enhancement to the range of options available to the user community.
