Self-Directed IRA Service Providers
June 2014
Over the past 15 years, the self-directed IRA market has grown dramatically from only a handful of custodians
and administrators specializing in alternative assets to over 30 today. IRA investors are turning to this once
mostly overlooked area to broaden their investment options and to take advantage of the ability to invest in
asset classes that they have knowledge or expertise in. This is due to several factors: 1) the continued volatility
of the stock market; 2) growing investor mistrust of the stock mar
conventional credit; and 4) low yields of traditional fixed income investments. These combined with the fact that
IRAs held $5.7 trillion in assets at the end of the second quarter of this year should keep the g
market place climbing for the foreseeable future.

each category:
Custodians
A custodian is a company who is either approved and regulated directly by the IRS, or
by a bank or trust company and subject to regulation from their state Banking Commissioner and/or the
Comptroller of Currency and FDIC. Custodians handle the formation, paperwork and administrative services
for retirement accounts. Self-directed custodians are similar to traditional custodians in that they are
institutions that house or "custody" retirement funds, The main difference from traditional IRA custodians is
that self-directed custodians are passive, meaning they offer no
their own investments into non-traditional assets.

Customer Complaints
Better Business Bureau: Not accredited
BBB Website Alert - On April 4, 2012 accreditation was suspended due to the
business’s failure to respond to and resolve BBB complaints promptly. Additionally
the business had not eliminated the underlying cause of patterns of customer
complaints concerning customer service issues and failure to respond to customers.
The company met with BBB on April 18, 2012 and outlined steps it had recently taken
to improve its internal handling of customer service related issues. The suspension
was reviewed by the Accreditation Committee of the BBB Board of Directors on April
19th. The committee voted to maintain the suspension of the company’s BBB
Accreditation for at least six months to determine if steps taken to minimize customer
service-related complaints are successful, and to revisit the company’s BBB
accreditation at that time.
