CRITERION 4: INFRASTRUCTURAL AND LEARNING RESOURCES

Some of the new innovations and infrastructural additions in the current academic year are as follows:

1. Addition of a fourth bus to the fleet As the number of students increased in the current academic year, the College purchased a fourth bus for the travel convenience of the students and the staff.

2. Airtel 3G Tower The lack of affordable internet facilities has hindered proper and prompt communication as well as research possibilities. Though high speed internet facility through satellite connectivity was available, it was limited to the administrative needs of the College due to its exorbitant cost and user limitations. The Management took initiative to make a special request to the Airtel authorities to set up a dedicated tower for the Claretines on Campus and consequently, a 3G tower is under construction, which is nearing completion and will become functional shortly. This facility will help staff and students easy and ready access to learning and research resources.

3. Refurbished IGNOU Office The IGNOU office was refurbished for easier accessibility and visibility, greater functional and administrative ease, and for larger working and storage space.

4. Claretine Honesty Shop A value-induced venture – Claretine Honesty Shop – was launched on November 14, 2014. The Shop, placed at a venue that is free of CCTV coverage, provides open and unsupervised access to stationery items. Students may freely walk in, check the price written on each box, and deposit the required money in the cash box kept open and take change if required. The Project has been greatly successful as 96% of honesty index has been recorded. The entire project runs on trust capital. Such Honesty Shops have been tried out in a few Claretian schools elsewhere and have been found very successful. The purpose of the entire project is to train students to practice values in real life and learn values by doing.

5. Preliminary Sketches for the Professional Course Building The preliminary architectural sketches for the proposed professional courses block have been made. The proposed block will consist of basement, ground floor, first and second floors. The following facilities are included in the proposed building:

6. Earth-cutting for Basketball Ground and Ground Expansion The College has initiated earth-cutting in order to provide greater and varied sports and games facilities for the growing student community. Currently, the earth cutting is being done for setting up an additional basketball court. On completion of the task, the earth cutting will take place along the length of the football/cricket grounds in order to provide adequate playing area for related games.

7. Redesigning of the Museum and Indigenous Cultural Exhibits The College had a small tribal Museum for the last 6 years. In the current academic year, the entire Museum was redesigned with strategic placement and greater visibility. The Museum currently resides along the three stairways: the stairway from the ground floor exhibits cultural artefacts of Arunachal Pradesh; the stairway from

Saint Claret College, Ziro:: Supplementary SSR Page 17

the first floor hosts artefacts from the Rest of India; and the stairway to the auditorium holds those from various countries of the world. On the opposite side of the Museums, photo collages of life in Arunachal are showcased, scenes culled from childhood games and play, village life and its contents, and architectural specimens and historical events. The entire rationale of the Museum is to honor the land and people where the College is situated as well as to instill in the students a sense of pride and appreciation for one’s own culture and to encourage them to preserve all that is bright and beautiful in own culture while being open to and receptive to what is good and true in other cultures of the country and the world. The Museum thus serves as a window to one’s own cultural soul and a window to the world outside.

8. Incinerator for Sanitary Pads Disposal (under construction) An incinerator for the hygienic disposal of sanitary pads in the women’s hostel is being constructed. The initiative was out of greater sensitivity to the needs and dignity of women as well as to provide a healthy and hygienic ambience in the hostel.

9. Tiling of the Washing Area at the Hostel The plate washing area of the hostel has been renovated in order to provide more healthy and hygienic atmosphere as well as to improve the aesthetic quotient of the hostel.

10. Street Lighting The road from College to the hostel has been lit up with street light. This has been done to serve two purposes: (1) greater security for the lady hostellers; (2) sufficient lighting in winter; (3) Risk-free use of the road.

11. Mercy Café As the student strength has increased, an additional food court has been permitted on Campus – Mercy Café – for the gastronomic convenience of the students. The Mercy Café is being owned and managed by one of the alumni of the College.

CRITERION 6: GOVERNANCE, LEADERSHIP, & MANAGEMENT

Some of the latest developments regarding governance, leadership, and management in the current academic year are the following:

1. Dedicated Support from the Governing Body The Governing Body has been very supportive for the accreditation process launched by the College as well as for the visionary growth of the College.

2. Approval of Diversification of Courses and Dateline of Development The Management has adopted diversification of courses as a priority in response to the needs of the youth of the State. Accordingly, decision has been taken to apply for B. Com from the next academic session (starting in July 2015). The application was submitted to the University on December 22, 2014, and the decision is awaited. A Dateline for prioritized development sequence has also been adopted with the Silver Jubilee horizon in mind, as follows:

3. Approval of the Professional Course Block Construction

I.D.A.Z. Design Consultants have been chosen as the architectures for the proposed professional courses’ block. Accordingly, the preliminary drawings of the building have been received, reviewed, and accepted. Once the funds are in place, the construction of Block II is expected to begin.

4. III International Conference of Claretian Educators The Principal, together with the Staff Coordinator, attended the III International Conference of Claretian Educators which saw brainstorming and active interaction among delegates from around 20 countries. The Principal, Dr. (Fr.) Paulson Veliyannoor, led a session on “Character Formation as Evangelization in the Multi-Religious Context 0f India.” It was primarily a conference meant for exploration of collaborations and exposure for the staff in view of learning from mutual experience and international exposure.

5. Reinforcement of IQAC Saint Claret College established the IQAC as early as 2004 (the second year of its existence) as a sign and fruit of its commitment to quality. In the past few months, the IQAC Office has been remodeled and made more organized and work-friendly.

6. Collaborative and Participatory Preparation for Accreditation The NAAC accreditation stages and processes were initiated and sustained through a highly collaborative and participatory style of management. The entire teaching and nonteaching staff have been coopted for the work and consequently, fully involved in the preparation of the Self Study Report (SSR) as well as the Peer Team Visit.

CRITERION 7: INNOVATIONS AND BEST PRACTICES

1. Morning Assembly An innovation of the current academic year is the introduction of a daily morning assembly. Being a college community, it was decided not to have a school-type assembly with students lining up outside. Instead, at the first hour of the day (9:05 AM), at the ring of the bell, all students together with the teacher, stand up in their respective classes, and through the public address system, a select group of students leads the assembly. A prayer hymn is sung, followed by greeting and announcement by the Principal/Vice Principal, wishing of birthday greetings if any staff is celebrating birthday on a particular day, and the Claretine Prayer. Occasionally, a radio jingle or advertisement created by the students of Mass Communication is aired. The entire assembly takes around 5 minutes and has been found to be very effective in calling attention of the students to important news items and deadlines.

2. Giant Sized Permanent Projector Screens The College had three LCD projectors and one more was purchased for greater availability of AV resources. Two giant-sized screens were fixed permanently, one in the Conference Hall and the other, in the Auditorium.

3. Museum Re-Design As mentioned under Criterion 6, the already existing tribal artefacts’ museum was re-designed and made more visible and organized at three levels – Arunachal Pradesh, Rest of India, and the World. The Museum is a creative attempt at encouraging students to honor and preserve their own culture while being receptive and appreciative of the human culture all over the world.

4. Claretine Honesty Shop One of the features of Claretian educational institutions is the innovative and ethically inclined practices. One such practice in place in several of our schools is Honesty Shops. At Saint Claret College, we inaugurated the “Claretine Honesty Shop” on November 14, 2014. It is a student-centered unique and creative ethical innovation, aimed at affirming the honesty and integrity of the students. The Claretine Honesty Shop works on honesty and trust capital. The Shop, with various types of stationery goods for purchase, remains open on all working days, with no shopkeeper to man it and with no security cameras rolling. Anyone who wants to buy any item available at the shop can simply walk in, look at the price chart, deposit the required amount in the cash box, and take the material, with no one watching except one’s own ethical self. It is values in action.
