Big disappointment: There are disappointments in life, then there are the 300 folks in Copenhagen, Denmark who thought they’d won the lottery. They received news from the state lot- tery company, Danske Spil, that they had won jackpots of up to 280 billion Danish crowns – about $49.7 billion. Of course, it was too good to be true. The company quickly corrected itself, informing the winners they’d be taking home between 200 and 400 crowns, or up to $70. Spokesman Thomas Rorsig indicated that the incident was human error and when the correct amount was announced, most winners took the bad news 'on the chin.' Stolen supplies: In Stuttgart, Germany, a 69-year-old janitor retired after several decades of employment with the city, thus ending a career during which he also stole over 27 tons of office items and cleaning supplies. Only upon retirement did he admit his thievery. He took police to his apartment where he still had most of what he had pilfered. Authorities say that because he admitted to the thefts and because the items could be returned to the city, he won’t be charged. Attorney Alan Kopit is aware that lots of workers occasionally help themselves to items from the supply cabinet, but the janitor went way beyond that. “They forget these items are company property,” he said. Snakes on a plane: When Braden Blennerhassett realized a snake was crawling down his leg, the Australian pilot radioed air traffic controllers to alert them he was going to land his plane to deal with the situation. Blennerhassett was on a flight from Dar- win to Peppimenarti, in northern Australia, when he discovered he had the slithering visitor in the cockpit with him. He says his blood pressure and heart rate became a bit elevated. “It was an interesting experience,” he says. When the plane landed, a fire- fighter discovered the snake had company – a green tree frog. It’s suspected the non-venomous green tree snake may have been hunting the frog and followed it onto the plane. Coming home: Eveline Kosenbach, of the Munich Animal Sanc- tuary in Germany, says a cat that was missing for 15 years was returned to its home with the help of the identification number tattooed in its ear. Everyone was surprised Poldi, a ginger tom cat, was even alive, as a cat’s lifespan is about 15 years. But a teenager in a village about 19 miles from Munich found the stray in the woods and felt sorry for it because it seemed so old. He brought it home and once he discovered the tattoo, Poldi was soon reunited with his mistress. Kosenbach says Poldi’s owner had long since given up hope of ever seeing the cat again. Trivia 1. Is a concave lens thicker or thinner at the center? 2. What is a blue heeler? 3. What is the capital of Paraguay? 4. What popular dessert consists of peaches, ice cream and raspberry sauce? 5. Where are the Spanish Steps located? Quoteable Quotes “Honest differences are often a healthy sign of progress.” - Mahatma Gandhi “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” - Zig Ziglar “Many speak the truth when they say they despise riches, but they mean the riches possessed by other men.” - Charles Caleb Coulton

Did You Know...Michael’s gift: Singer Michael Jackson once gave his friend, actress Elizabeth Taylor, a diamond bracelet. The bracelet was one of Taylor’s personal items to be auctioned off at Christie’s auction house in New York. It sold for $194,500.Unexplained: The Bermuda Triangle is located in the Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda, Puerto Rico and Florida. Many ships and planes have mysteriously disappeared there, but it’s possible that these disappearances were caused by bad weather or human error.First free mail: Hotmail was the fi rst free email service and has been the leading one since it started in 1996. Email accounts can be hacked, and because the most common password is 123456, it’s best to pick something different when setting up your account.Ticked off: It’s not uncommon for hikers to return from a walk in the woods to fi nd wood ticks attached to their skin. Ticks fi nd humans, and other mammals, because they can detect carbon dioxide produced during exhalation.
