Introduction
This document supports our Curriculum Intent which outlines the fundamental
structure and rationale for our curriculum. This Curriculum Overview provides
additional detail about the way in which we teach different groups of learners,
how we break down academic learning and why as well as how we personalise
learning to each and every individual.
Our academic learning is broken down into the domains that you can see on this
page. The key reasons underpinning the design of our Curriculum Domains model
are:
to recognise the value of each area of the curriculum and
address the marginalisation of some areas;
to uphold and strengthen the interconnectivity
between curriculum areas and encourage thinking
about which aspects might be taught separately
and which combined;
to include nationally determined progressions from
the National Curriculum but provide space for locally
determined needs to be addressed;
to promote flexible implementation and creativity;
to support teachers to guard against curriculum
overload.

Aims
Finding out about themselves and the
world around them, how to interact
with the world and how it responds to
that interaction. Learning is experiential
and based on concrete interactions.
Making links between what they know,
experimenting and extending with their
knowledge of the world and
themselves. Noticing patterns and
trends. Learning is not always around
concrete experiences.
Widening range of communication
Independence
Exploring abstract concepts and
technical language. Forming ideas
based on prior learning, transferring
learning to new situations and
scenarios. Predicting and problem
solving.
Focus for
learning
Learn about the world through their
senses and the manipulation of objects
Developing interests
Eliciting responses
Giving a voice
Sensory
Independence
Therapies
Experiencing different locations
Physical strength & movement
Some subject specific learning takes
place.
Develop memory and imagination.
They are also able to understand things
symbolically and to understand the
ideas of the past and future
Attitudes and attributes
Skills, knowledge and understanding
Learning is subject specific and
revolves around a deeper
understanding of fundamental
concepts become more aware of
external events, as well as feelings
other than their own. They become less
egocentric and begin to understand
that not everyone shares their thoughts,
beliefs, or feelings. Begin to use logic to
solve problems, view the world around
them, and plan for the future
Application of skills, knowledge and
understanding
Independence
When we talk of supporting our learners to develop their independence, what we actually mean is we want to develop
creativity and intellectual curiosity, to be active rather than passive, to work out their own answers rather than being
told what to think, to act and pursue their own investigations. Learners exploring for themselves is at the very core of
their learning experience. We want our learners to know when they need support and know how to get that support.
Our challenge is to prepare each learner that steps through our doorway as best we can for life outside of Selworthy.

The Selworthy SPECIAL qualities form the framework for the Fundamental and Access components of our curriculum. Not only
do they enhance our exploratory curriculum stream but they provide meaningful life skills to enrich our learner experience.
We enable maximum participation to better prepare them for life beyond Selworthy. The skills cover all ages and all abilities
and in no way represent a hierarchy. Each learner will work on the areas that are most pertinent to them and therefore
develop their own unique skills profile. Through engaging with a broad range of learning and life experiences, each learner
builds a digital portfolio to take forward to their next stage of their life journey.
Evidence is gathered against a learner’s short term EHCP targets as agreed with parents at the annual review. We limit the
targets for any one year to 5, usually one for each category of need in the plan. Using professional judgement, teachers tag
significant achievements or “Milestones” as indicators of progress towards a target. This area can also include targets set by
therapists and external professionals which do not easily align with the short-term target areas but still represent a significant
element of a learner’s timetable.
