Final essay

Suggestion:
Semantic Web and KR
• Semantic Web is about representing knowledge ...
• ... with a strong desire of interoperability
• Tools for KR, developed within the SW initiative can be effortless used to represent knowledge ...
• ... With the advantage that you are ready (if you want) to share these information!
Representing Knowledge
• It is a very difficult task
• It is a form of “art”
• Requires strong formal basis ...
• ... as well as a practical approach to be • ... as well as a practical approach to be

Who is using SW?
Today a healthy industry is growing around SW:
• startups (Top Quadrant, C&P, Talis, Zepheira,
Cambridge Semantics, Garlik, OpenLink, iSOCO,
Franz Inc., Sandpiper, Aduna, Faviki, Twine, …)Franz Inc., Sandpiper, Aduna, Faviki, Twine, …)
• big corporations offering tools (IBM, Oracle, HP,
Adobe, Profium,…)
• even more are using it in some way or other
(Novartis, Sun, Eli Lily, EDF, Yahoo!, Google, FAO,
Bankinter, …)

Forecasts?
By 2012, 80% of public Web sites will use some level of semantic hypertext to create SW documents […] 15% of public Web sites will use more extensive Semantic Web-based ontologies to create semantic databases
[Gartner report, May 2007]
PWC believes a Web of data will develop that fully augments the document Web of today. You’ll be able to find and take pieces of data sets from different places, aggregate them without warehousing, and analyze them in a more straightforward, powerful way than you can now.
