FROM THE HELM………………
The Oyster Roast was fantastic as usual. Thank you, Bob and Janet and crew.
My only complaint is I was overserved again.
It’s time to nominate the members that you feel have made exceptional
contributions to the club. This is always difficult because there are so many
members that make this club great and only a few can receive the rewards
each year. The following is the criteria for each award.
Awards/Recognition Program
Outstanding Member Award (to be awarded annually)
The Outstanding Member Award is for recognition of a Seaford Yacht Club Member who has
demonstrated outstanding leadership/participation/support during the past club year and who may not
qualify for the Keel Club Award or Yachtsman Award. This award is designed to provide recognition for a
club member who has made singular significantly contributing efforts or a member who has made those
continuous supporting efforts throughout the period of award—those extra efforts that make the Club
year highly successful. The member will receive a certificate for the award.
Any Seaford Yacht Club Member in good standing may be nominated for the award. Members of the
Board of Trustees and Committee Chairmen will nominate candidates to the Board of Trustees and the
Board will select the recipient from those nominees. The award announcement and certificate
presentation will be made at the annual meeting.
Keel Club (does not need to be given each year) The SYC Keel Club is an honorary society of SYC. The
purpose is to honor SYC members who have given extraordinary service to the Club over several years.
Any member elected to the club shall have his/her name inscribed on a plaque to be hung in the Club. The
member shall also receive a plaque indicating he/she is a member.
Criteria: To be nominated, a member must have belonged to SYC for a period of at least ten years, and
be a member in good standing.
Service should have been given to the Club in several areas, i.e., over and above requirements of
positions held in the Club and over several years.
A nomination letter should be sent to the Board of Trustees stating why this person should be
recognized as a Keel Club member. Nominations will not be solicited or made by the Board of Trustees
and need not be made on an annual basis.
2
Yachting Award (does not need to be given each year) The Yachting Award is an ongoing, annual
award given by SYC. The award is not solely for sportsmanship (i.e., racing) and is open to all members of
the Club. The award is given to the Club member who exemplifies the purposes of the Club which are to
promote and practice yachting, boating, sailing, navigation and seamanship, by way of recreating and
helping provide facilities for social intercourse and entertainment of SYC members.
The recipient will be recognized at the annual meeting and his/her name will be inscribed on a plaque at
the Club.
Criteria: To be nominated, a member must be a member in good standing. A member should have given
service to the Club during the year he/she is nominated but also have a history of being active in the
Club.
Nominations should be solicited by the Board of Trustees in September or October by placing a notice in
the Semaphore. If no nominations are made, the award will not be given that year. Members of the
Board of Trustees are allowed to make nominations.
Please send your nomination to [email protected] or any member of the Board of Trustees.
Regards,
Commodore Carl
JUNIOR SAILING AND CHARITABLE GIVING
This year several club members assisted the Junior Sailing Program and the Boys and Girls Club by
sponsoring a Boys and Girls club member in the SYC Junior Sailing Program. This amounted to a $300
tax deductible donation to the Boys and Girls Club who in turn paid the fee for a Boys and Girls Club
member to participate in the SYC Junior Sailing program. We would like to continue this program in
2019. If you are able to make a $300 contribution now and take the tax deduction this year, please
contact Art Dister or Paul Hutter.

DINNER MEETINGS
October 16, 2018—Mama Mia
Bill and Alita Small with their co-hosts Nancy and Barry Shrout and Gail and Chuck Eldred hosted the
October dinner. The traditional Italian spaghetti dinner was complete with an antipasto salad, generous
helpings of spaghetti with meat sauce, bread, and red wine. For those who had room for dessert after
the hearty meal, ice cream with various toppings was served. Christine & Tim Dube, Cheryl & Ben Huggin,
Joan Gay, Debbie & Dale Calender and Donna & Ken Nitchie made up the crew who helped prepare and
serve this delicious meal. Beer Meister Tom Feldhaus made sure that there was plenty of beer and
Donna Gilroy was in charge of reservations and collecting money. A big thanks you to all of you!

Hyatt Oyster Grounds Lease Appeal
A meeting to discuss the status of the Hyatt Oyster Grounds Lease Appeal was held at SYC on October
3. A large number of Dandy and Seaford residents were in attendance. Malcolm and Helmut gave a
summary of the VMRC decision. SYC has received donations towards the attorney fees for an appeal of
the VMRC decision. Jandy indicated that funds are being maintained in a separate account.
Defib Training
Kevin MacRitchie arranged for CPR and DeFib training for the BOT. The 1 hour session was held before
the start of the monthly meeting. The BOT found the instruction very helpful.
The instructor indicated SYC’s AED pads are out of date and recommended we order new ones.
Building Committee
Randy Strickland presented the agreement for the preliminary design-build. Ben had questions about
the cash flow and timing of the $34,500 contract payment and the timeframe of the first payment due
on the building loan. The BOT wanted to be certain that SYC could get a loan before paying a large fee
for design drawings. Jandy indicated that the club was in good financial shape and Jandy noted that the
Finance Committee had reviewed the figures and recommended that the board approve the payment
from cash on hand. Carl indicated that one bank had already offered a loan and that he would be meeting
with TownBank, Old Point, and First Advantage Credit Union to explore the best terms for the building
loan.

Nominating Committee
Carl asked for volunteers to head the nominating committee for the 2019 BOT. Fran Butterfoss was
suggested and Carl will contact her to see if she will volunteer.
