WHY COMPETE?

• Moot competitions help you to build legal research, analytical and problem solving skills;

• Competitions allow you to practically apply what you learn in law school to legal problems of a wide variety; and

• Competitions are a fun way to challenge yourself, meet new people and enhance your professional prospects.

WHAT COMPETITIONS ARE RUNNING?

• In Second Semester:• First Year Moot• Novice Moot• Client Interview/Negotiations Legal Skills Workshop

• Get a first hand experience of legal competitions, have some fun and build some great foundational skills;

• If you enjoy competing in our novice/first year competitions you may wish to compete in our senior competitions next year!

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN EACH COMPETITION?

Novice/First Year Moot

• Appellate Advocacy;• Enter the competition as an individual

(can indicate a partner for Rd 1); • Receive a problem question week before

each round night; • Each team then works together to

produce written submissions; • Written submissions must outline the

legal position and use supporting authorities;

• On the round night each team will then give oral submissions before a judge;

• The most persuasive person wins the round.

Mooting is all about using law and facts to present a persuasive argument

Client Interview and Negotiations

Skills Seminar

• Not a competition!• You can participate in one or both

sessions;• Negotiation Session• Client Interview Session

• This session is all about building foundational skills to be used in the rest of your law degree and potentially career!

What are the competition dates?

FIRST YEAR MOOT (Preliminary Rounds every fortnight)• Round 1: 12th August• Round 2: 26th August

NOVICE MOOT (Preliminary Rounds every fortnight)• Round 1: 19th August • Round 2: 2nd September

MOOT FINALS• QF: 9th September

(Note there will only be a week between the novice round 2 and the Quarter Final due to the short semester)

• SF: 16th September• GF: 7th October

(Note this will be after the holidays, the question will be released during the last week of break)

COMPREHENSIVE MOOT PREPARATION SEMINAR

When: FRIDAY 31st MAY Where: Napier Lower Ground 28What to expect: • In-depth look at the rules and scoring criteria; • The comps team will take you through step by step how to

draft written and oral submissions; and • how to maximise your scoring potential. We will also be

giving you some great practical examples and some great hints and tips.

This is a great opportunity to ask questions, and prepare for the moots!!

The AULSS will operate online sign ups this year

• You have all already been sent the sign up links in my welcome to competitions email and there will be a

reminder email out today or tomorrow and the links will be on the facebook page!!

All you have to do is follow the correct links and fill in the

information!

HOW TO SIGN UP!

Sign ups will open immediately after this

seminar at 5pm

Entries will close on the 3rd of May (1st Year

Moot) and the 10th of May (Novice and Skills

Seminar)

NO ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED

BEFORE 5pm TODAY OR AFTER 5pm on

the indicated dates

competitions Handbooks so keep an eye on your email! • Contains vital hints, tips and some basic style

guides for approaching problem questions and competition nights – it also has example problems and approaches!
