YOUR FIRST DAYSYou will receive all the information you need at orientation for international students the day after arrival day. This includes procedures for registering with the police, registering for classes, and answers to all of the practical questions you may have. Members of the Erasmus Student Network will introduce you to life in Norway and arrange social events for the first weekend before the Norwegian students arrive and the official semester start festival begins. STUDYING AT UIAUiA’s primary information channel is www.uia.no. You will find messages, links to the student web, practical information, examination information, the ECTS course catalogue, class schedules, an overview of student associations, and lots of other useful links here. You also use www.uia.no to log into UiA’s Learning Management System, Fronter. Fronter is used as an information channel by your lecturers, professors and study programme coordinators. A Fronter course will be offered shortly after arrival.

Students are expected to read the information on the web, in Fronter and received by email. Emails sent from UiA will go to your UiA email account, not your private email account.

THE ECTS COURSE CATALOGUEThe ECTS course catalogue is found here: www.uia.no/ects. It is a translation of the Norwegian study handbook, and you should find all course descriptions here, as well as a lot of useful practical information. The examination regulations are also included, and students are expected to be familiar with these.

SEMESTER AND EXAMINATION REGISTRATION FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTSWhen you arrive, you will receive a semester card. Exchange students are pre-registered and do NOT have to approve an individual education plan. Although you are registered as a student, you are not registered for classes or examinations. You cannot get access to all of your information in Fronter until you have registered for classes and examinations. You have to register for classes and examinations on the Student Web by 1 September for autumn and 1 February for spring. If you miss the deadline, you will not be able to register for exams!

SEMESTER AND EXAMINATION REGISTRATION FOR DEGREE-SEEKING STUDENTSDegree-seeking students are NOT pre-registered and have to pay the semester fee and approve their individual education plan. A guide is available here: www.uia.no/en/portals/ study/academic_affairs/studentweb

You can pick up your semester card from the Service Centre the day after you register. Otherwise, it will be sent by post to your semester address.

SPECIAL EXAMINATION ARRANGEMENTS If you need to apply for special examination arrangements for medical or other reasons, be sure to do this by 15 October for autumn semester or 15 March for spring semester. STUDENT CARDIn addition to your semester card, you will receive a student card. The card will entitle you to borrow books, access buildings, print, copy and scan. You will receive a PIN that you can use to get into certain buildings after closing time. You can also use your student card and semester card to receive special offers for students throughout Norway.

To get your student card, you need to have a valid ID (passport or driver’s license) and your semester card. Take a number from the queue machine and wait your turn.

STUDENT LIFEThere are more than 50 student activities you can participate in while studying at UiA. Joining a student activity that suits your needs can improve your stay in many ways. Not only will you have the opportunity to get to know your fellow Norwegian students better, you can also do something fun and educational in your spare time.

With so much to choose from, it may be hard to pick. To make this easier for the new students, most of the teams, clubs and organisations will have stands on the lawn during the semester start festival. Make sure you check them out and find out which one is right for you!

ERASMUS STUDENT NETWORK AGDER (ESN)ESN Agder is a volunteer student organisation which works primarily to improve the exchange students’ stay. Throughout the year, ESN arranges trips, parties and other social events. ESN’s main goal is to give international students a semester abroad where they can experience Kristiansand and other parts of Norway at its best, and make friends for life. ESN also focuses on integration through language exchange, International Day and International Pubs. You are welcome to join the events committee and contribute ideas to make your stay at UiA a memorable one!

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT UNION AGDER (ISU)The International Student Union at UiA is committed to the social, academic and political interests of all international students who study at UiA. STUDENT VENUES (BARS / PUBS) Students have their own venues – Bluebox in Grimstad, Østsia at Campus Kristiansand and Pir6 in the centre of Kristiansand. They are run by SiA in cooperation with the students and are home to musical reviews, concerts, student evenings, quizzes and many other events.

CAFETERIA – CAFÈ CAMPUS With more than 3,000 visitors every day, Café Campus is the most important meeting place at UiA, whether you are in Kristiansand or Grimstad. The café in Kristiansand has been voted the country’s best student cafeteria several years in a row.

SPECIAL OFFERS Super special on «Young Adult» bus card UiA students can buy a Young Adult ”Ung voksen” card for half price! This offer is valid from 20 – 31 August for people aged 20-29. The card entitles you to unlimited travel within 30 days on all regular busses in both of the Agder counties. Only one refill per student is permitted for the duration of the offer.Buy your bus card here: >20 and 21 August: On the Nettbuss bus in front of the main entrance to the UIA campus in Kristiansand or at the bus stand on the lawn.>At the bus station, Vestre Strandg. 33 in Kristiansand.

NB! The half-price card cannot be bought on regular busses or through AKT’s web shop. The card is not valid on express busses, night busses or airport shuttles. The card itself costs 50 NOK. Remember your student ID card and semester card.

Cheap Oslo tripStudents receive half of student price on roundtrip tickets from Kristiansand to Oslo with Konkurrenten.no from 25 August to 6 September. The offer is not valid on Fridays and Sundays. Konkurrenten has close to 100 weekly departures from Kristiansand and Oslo. The busses are stylish and comfortable. Most of them have electricity and free internet access onboard. Konkurrenten guarantees that you will get a seat, so you do not need to order tickets ahead of time. www.konkurrenten.no

Special offer to Denmark!Every Thursday from 1 September to 15 December, you can travel with SuperSpeed to Denmark and Hirtshals for just 49 NOK! The trip takes 3 hours and 15 minutes. Discount tickets to Kilden Theatre and Concert Hall 80 seats sold for 80 NOK every day on all of Kilden’s original productions in the Concert Hall, Theatre and Opera Hall. Tickets can be bought at Kilden’s box office up to one month before the performance. Maximum two tickets per person.Kilden is Kristiansand’s new landmark. There’s a lot going on – almost every night! Helicopter trip above Gimlemoen and Kristiansand (21 August)Take a short trip over the city! The helicopter has departures from the lower part of the lawn on campus on Tuesday, 21 August from 12-15. Register and pay at the helicopter. 350 NOK per student.

Walk in Kristiansand (23 August)Do you want to get to know Kristiansand even better? On this walk, you will receive practical information about things you should know, and hear many stories about the city. The university’s own self-appointed and knowledgeable guide takes you on a two hour trip. You can jump off whenever you like. Meet at the Cathedral on the square at 14:30.

Summer on the Square (23 August)A big hit for the last few summers! The concept has been expanded to include a ”student edition” during the start of the semester. The format is the same: Live music and a great atmosphere on the square in the centre of Kristiansand. “Playmood” plays Norwegian and international summer hits you are guaranteed to recognize! Free admission.

Norwegian Championships in Track and Field 2012 at Kristiansand Stadium Elite athletes, including Andreas Thorkildsen, will gather for the 2012 Norwegian Championships in Track and Field in Kristiansand. All students are welcome to this event at Kristiansand Stadium. Master chefs will magic up delicious food in a tent with room for over 600 people, in addition to exhibits and activities.

In cooperation with UiA, all students will receive half price tickets at the stadium (just 100 NOK for a three-day pass). You can also come to UiA’s own Norwegian Championships in Track and Field on Friday, 24 August at the Kristiansand campus and participate in competitions and activities and win free tickets, or buy tickets for just 50 NOK (three-day pass, only valid for events on campus). www.krs2012.no

Climbing at Odderøya (24 August)14.00 - 20.00 Kristiansand Student Sports Clubs are organising a climbing group and Christiansand Climbing Club is offering a free climbing day for new students on Odderøya. There will also be grilling – bring your own food. The event is alcohol-free. Stop by whenever you like.Where’s Odderøya? From the central bus station: follow Vestre Strandg. south to where it turns into a bridge toward Odderøya. After the bridge, take the second road on the left. Follow the main road up toward a large parking lot (about 500 metres). Then follow the signposts toward the lighthouse, down a steep gravel trail.

Stroll in Jegersberg in Kristiansand (25 August)Jegersberg is just outside the campus area at Gimlemoen, and is one of the city’s most popular recreational areas during the winter. Per Svein Holte from the local nature guiding organisation takes you on a trip. He knows the area by heart. The two-hour walk ends with grilling and free hot dogs. Meet at Hokus Pokus nursery school at 12:00. www.midt-agderfriluft.no

Boat trip around the skerries (26 August)Kristiansand’s «skjærgård» is spectacular. On this trip, you’ll see what makes this area so special. Departure is from Marvika on Lund at 14:00. The trip lasts three hours and is free. NB: There are a limited number of seats – first come, first served! Register online.

Pub crawl (29 August)Get to know the nightlife in Kristiansand! Student clubs are arranging their traditional pub crawl with games and scavenger hunts. Meet at Kick Café, Dronningens gate 8, 17:00. Price: 50 NOK

Free Day at the Zoo (30 August)Thursday, 30 August starting at 10:00 – All new students (and their children) receive free admission to the zoo and water park. The zoo usually closes at 15:00, but parts of the park will remain open until 17:00. The water park closes at 19:00. The day at the zoo was one of last year’s most popular events. Krstiansand Zoo, with its 102 different species and many attractions, is a lively park that spreads joy, experience and knowledge to all of its visitors. TIP! Busses to the zoo have frequent departures from Spicheren (the gym).

Football Match at Sør Arena: IK Start vs. Bærum (2 September)Students receive tickets for 60 NOK, which is half price of student price! Tickets can be bought at Sør Arena before or on match day. Free student trip to Denmark (11 and 18 September)As a student, you can take a free trip to Denmark with the SuperSpeed ferry on 11th and 18th September. Departure: 16:30. Be at the terminal by 15:30 at the latest. Return from Hirtshals at midnight the same day. UiA Run (22 September)Run in Jegersberg Saturday, 22 September, followed by a concert in Kilden. There will be a great atmosphere on the lawn in front of UiA Gimlemoen, with entertainment and grilling. The run also launches the annual TV pledge campaign. This year, money raised will go to Amnesty International.

Register for classes and exams on the StudentWeb, ASAP

Register your correct address, home and Norwegian, on the StudentWeb
