No. 16 Florida State, which has won seven of its last eight games, travels to play Pittsburgh at the Peterson Events Center in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. The Seminoles’ game at Pittsburgh marks the third time this season the games has been scheduled to be played. The game was originally scheduled for January 9 and postponed and then scheduled for February 6 and postponed again. The Seminoles were originally scheduled to play Virginia Tech on Saturday in Tallahassee. That game against the Hokies has been postponed. Florida State arrives in Pittsburgh fresh from its 81-60 victory over No. 6 Virginia on Monday in Tallahassee – the Seminoles’ third victory of the season over a nationally ranked opponent. In the last five season, the Seminoles have won an ACC-high five games against Virginia. Following Saturday’s game at Pittsburgh, the Seminoles will play at Miami on Wednesday, February 24 at 8:30 p.m. WALKER ENTERS SATURDAY’S GAME AGAINST PITTSBURGH ONLY 7 POINTS FROM 1,000 FOR HIS CAREER Senior M.J. Walker enters Saturday’s game at Pittsburgh with 993 career points and needs only seven points to become the 47th member of the Seminoles’ 1,000 career-point club. He scored 17 points on five of six made 3-point field goals in the Seminoles’ win over No. 6 Virginia on Monday and is averaging a career-high 13.9 points scored per game through the Seminoles’ first 15 games of the season. GRAY AND BARNES EARN ACC WEEKLY HONORS Florida State redshirt junior RaiQuan Gray is the current ACC Player of the Week while Seminole rookie Scottie Barnes is the current ACC Freshman of the Week as announced by the Atlantic Coast Conference. Both Gray and Barnes were instrumental in helping Florida State defeat Wake Forest, 92-85 in overtime, in the Seminoles’ only game last week. It marks the first time in his career that Gray has earned the weekly Player of the Week honor and is the second time Barnes has been tabbed as the ACC Rookie of the Week. Gray scored his career-high of 24 points and pulled down his career-high of 12 rebounds against the Deacons while Barnes scored 13 points, pulled down four rebounds, totaled four assists and two steals and made the biggest basket of the game for the Seminoles – a reverse lay-up with 0.05 seconds remaining -- in the second half to send the game into overtime. Sardaar Calhoun Took Winding Road From Tappahannock To Tallahassee By David Teel Richmond Times Dispatch February 15, 2021 From Tappahannock to St. George to West Plains, Mo., Sardaar Calhoun followed a circuitous path to his first season with Florida State’s basketball program. He wouldn’t change a thing. Not the three years at Essex High in his native Tappahannock. Not the reclassification and two seasons at the Blue Ridge School in St. George, near Charlottesville. And not the venture west to Missouri State University-West Plains, the community college where he played two years. “I think I’m naturally a patient person,” Calhoun said. “I grew up in a praying family, and prayer doesn’t work overnight. The route that I’ve taken, it’s been a long journey, but it’s been worth it.” Calhoun’s patience extended to Florida State, where his role was unclear when the season began. But as the Seminoles prepare for Monday’s ACC showdown against first-place Virginia, Calhoun is among a handful of reserves providing the quality depth for which Leonard Hamilton’s program is renowned. A 6-foot-6, 220-pound junior guard, Calhoun scored 40 points combined in FSU’s first 10 games. He’s scored 31 in the last four, including a season-best 14 in a rout of Clemson. Calhoun is among nine Seminoles averaging at least 4.9 points and 13 minutes. Couple that depth with FSU’s typical athleticism, length and defensive chops and you have a roster capable of winning the ACC regular season — the Seminoles are the reigning champions — and/or tournament and making considerable noise in the NCAA bracket. “Sardaar has been fan-TAS-tic in practice,” Hamilton said. “He’s worked his butt off. It’s not easy for a junior college player who’s had a certain amount of success in junior college to come into a program that has a system like we have offensively and defensively, where everything is in sync, and make that adjustment. … “I’m very pleased, and I tell him all the time [that] our program will advance in direct proportion to how well our players 6-11 [in the rotation] improve.” Senior M.J. Walker, redshirt juniors RaiQuan Gray and Anthony Polite, touted freshman Scottie Barnes and 7-1, 260-pound sophomore Balsa Koprivica provide FSU’s starting group an effective blend of experience and youth, the age especially helpful during this pandemic season’s constant twists. The Seminoles have paused twice because of COVID-19 concerns, but they won five consecutive games after their first stoppage and returned from their second with a 92-85 overtime escape against Wake Forest. At 38.7%, FSU is on pace to have its best 3-point shooting year since 1988, and Calhoun is an integral reason. He’s made 13 of 30 beyond the arc, 43.3% accuracy that mirrors his 44.3% rate at West Plains, where he averaged 18.6 points. Calhoun credits Blue Ridge assistant coach Parker Kirwan for extending his range and does not regret prolonging his high school career by a year to elevate his game. Blue Ridge not only offered more challenging opponents but also daily competition with teammates such as Aamir Simms (Clemson) and Darius McGhee (Liberty). Still, Calhoun wasn’t tempted by scholarship offers from Radford, James Madison and East Tennessee State. He aspired to more and decided that Missouri State-West Plains could get him there.

That it did. West Plain teammates elected Calhoun a captain each of his two seasons, and his performance earned offers from the likes of Texas, Alabama, Georgia and Seton Hall. “I was just so, I didn’t get teary-eyed, but I just got a chill and thought, ‘Wow I’ve affected a lot of people with my voice and encouragement,’” Calhoun said of his captaincy at West Plains. “They saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself.” Calhoun took that enthusiasm — you can hear it in his voice — to Florida State. “His energy is just contagious,” fifth-year senior Justin Lindner said. “He’s always a happy person and gives great vibes wherever he goes. … [Coaches are] being hard on him because they want him to be great and they want him to play big minutes. … His patience has been remarkable.” Lindner is a walk-on and aims to be a college head coach. He and Calhoun are so close they’re already plotting for Calhoun to join Lindner’s staff after Calhoun’s professional career. Given that he’s averaging 5.1 points and 13.3 minutes, projecting Calhoun to the NBA or another pro league may seem a stretch. But consider Florida State’s recent history. Devin Vassell averaged 4.5 points and 10.7 minutes as a Seminoles freshman in 2018-19, nearly tripled those numbers last season and was the 11th pick of the NBA draft. Two other first-round draft choices from FSU, Mfiondu Kabengele and Patrick Williams, never started a game for the Seminoles. “I always knew I was pretty good,” Calhoun said, “so I didn’t lose hope or anything. It was just a matter of time when I was going to play at that level where everyone was going to see me. Not being cocky, but I knew I could play at a higher level than the schools that reached out to me [after Blue Ridge].” Calhoun cherishes his Tappahannock roots and the love he said the community shows him still. He’s equally grateful for the opportunity to play for an ACC contender, one capable of earning FSU’s second Final Four appearance — the Seminoles lost the 1972 title game to Bill Walton and UCLA after defeating North Carolina in the semifinals — and the first for Hamilton, a revered coaching lifer. “I think we can be one of the best teams [ever] at Florida State,” Calhoun said. “Honestly, when we’re out there, we’re playing for the letters on the front of our jersey. We don’t have one guy on the team who thinks they’re bigger than [the others]. … “It kind of gives me chills just thinking about it, you mentioning the Final Four, because we’re at the stretch point [of the season]. But I think we can really do it.”

A For Accountability: How 5th-Year Walk-Ons Play Vital Role In FSU Success Ira Schoffel Warchant February 16, 2021 If a text message exchange could define what is so unique about the Florida State men's basketball team, and help explain some of the Seminoles' unprecedented success, this one was it. On one end was five-star freshman Scottie Barnes. On the other was fifth-year walk-on Justin Lindner. "I need you to be on me more," Barnes implored his older but lesser-known teammate. "I want to be great, and I want this team to be great." Barnes is one of the most decorated freshmen in college basketball and an expected lottery pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. He's a 6-foot, 9-inch point guard averaging 10.2 points, 4.3 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game for the No. 16 team in the country. Lindner is a 6-foot-1, 180-pound walk-on whose greatest individual achievements at FSU include scoring four points against Chicago State in 2019 and earning a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics last May. Yet it is Barnes who is not only accepting basketball advice and constructive criticism from Lindner, but soliciting it. And the story is the same throughout the Seminoles' program. Florida State has four fifth-year senior walk-ons on the roster -- Lindner, Travis Light, Will Miles and Harrison Prieto -- and while they rarely see extended action on the court, they all have become major factors in the rise of the Seminoles' program. "Those guys are all graduate students," FSU head coach Leonard Hamilton said. "They have been part of our system for four or five years. So they know all of the principles that we emphasize. And the guys in our program want to be called out because they want to be held accountable. So those fifth-year seniors are able to help us with that during practice and games." Over time, they essentially have become extensions of the coaching staff, and they each have designated "accountability partners" that they help. Lindner is paired with the point guards -- Barnes, RayQuan Evans and "point forward" RaiQuan Gray. Light's main guys are the shooting guards, while Miles and Prieto work primarily with the forwards and centers. During offseason workouts, they help demonstrate fundamentals -- particularly when new players arrive in the program. During practices, they typically participate on the scout team and run the opponents' offense and defense. And during games, they provide extra sets of eyes and ears for the coaching staff. They digest every detail of the Seminoles' game plan for a specific opponent, and then watch from the bench to make sure the scholarship players are executing that plan correctly. "We have a certain way we like to close out [on shooters], a certain way we want to switch screens," Hamilton said. "And if someone doesn't do those things correctly, someone else will hold them accountable. We call each other out." Each of the walk-ons takes his own personal approach to delivering those messages.

When one of the players in his group comes out of a game, Miles said he usually waits for them to get a drink and to catch their breath. "A lot of times, I'll start off by asking what they see, and then I'll tell them what I see," said Miles, whose father, Bobby, and uncle Blake Miles both played at FSU. "That kind of helps bridge the gap, because it's a different experience when you're off the court versus when you're on the court." Miles, who is pursuing his master's degree in finance, also tries to always share a positive pointer when he is planning to offer up a critique. Before reminding a teammate that he made a mistake with a defensive assignment, for example, he'll compliment the way they fought through an opponent's box-out to grab a rebound. Inside the program, Miles said, they call it giving "a little sugar and hot sauce." "They're doing so many things out there," the Orlando native said. "A lot of times, they're doing a lot more good than bad. But everyone seems to remember the bad." Light, who is working toward a master's in business administration, said most of his in-game feedback is offering reminders about the scouting report. Maybe the coaches wanted to force a certain player to one side of the court. Or perhaps they wanted to extend their defense against a shooter with excellent range. Once a game gets going, he said, it's not unusual for some of those details to get overlooked. "You get caught up in the moment when you're playing the game," said Light, who came to FSU from Virginia. "Everyone does. So it's nice to have someone on the sideline who can kind of watch and observe everything and let you know what corrections you need to make." Prieto, who is pursuing a master's degree in meteorology, can't help but be amazed at how the seniors' roles have evolved over the last five years. When they first joined the program, their main job was to serve as able bodies for the scout team. They all were very good high school basketball players, but they also knew they could be easily replaced by a program like FSU. So their top goal was to learn everything they could and simply not mess things up. Over time, they feel like they've become well-versed in virtually offensive and defensive scheme being used in college basketball. "In the first year or two, we learned so much basketball," said Prieto, who hails from Louisiana. Added Miles: "In high school, you might have three plays and probably two defensive sets. Here, you've got different motions, actions, half-court sets, full-court sets ... it's a lot mentally and physically." Lindner is the only one of the four who actually plans to go into college coaching. So he is not only watching and listening to the players on the court, but he also is paying close attention to Hamilton and his coaching staff. With the bench area expanded and spaced out this year due to COVID-19 protocols, the Memphis native will purposefully get within earshot of associate head coach Stan Jones to get a feel for what impresses or concerns him. "We're able to talk strategy a lot," Lindner said. "And I'm able to hear things he's saying and then relay it to players. He's in the huddle, so he can't say every individual thing to every single player. So I'll hear his thoughts and try to relay them." Like the others, Lindner tries to pick his spots.

All of the walk-ons know better than to start offering their advice when Hamilton or his assistants are speaking, so Lindner will often chime in before the coaches begin or right when the huddle breaks. He said one of his constant messages to Barnes is to be more aggressive in transition because the freshman is so dangerous in those situations. With Gray, it might be reminders about attacking the offensive glass or stepping up his defense. And Gray is constantly asking for that feedback, Lindner said. "He's always on me to remind him to get steals and boards." Because the seniors have been in the program for so long, they often know the offensive and defensive schemes of upcoming opponents before they even get the scouting reports. And during games, they have fun recognizing what plays the other team is running and calling them out to help the players on the floor. "When we get a stop on that, that definitely means a lot to us," Miles said. "It means we did our job." That obviously is a major reward in itself. But sometimes, like in Monday's blowout victory against No. 7 Virginia, they get even more noticeable recognition. With 1:17 remaining, Hamilton inserted Lindner, Light and Miles into the game for the final few possessions. Prieto is nursing an injury and was not available, but the others have now made appearances in six of 15 games this season. It's a token of Hamilton's appreciation for the quartet's many contributions behind the scenes. And in the minds of the fifth-year seniors, it's one more symbol of what makes the FSU program so special. When the walk-ons get those late-game opportunities, the scholarship guys usually stand and cheer and smile, hoping each shot will go through the net. They root them on as a way to say thanks for everything they do for the program and for them individually. "Guys like Scottie Barnes or [current NBA players] Patrick Williams and Devin Vassell, they'll come in and want to learn from us," Prieto said. "That's very cool. It shows the type of character guys that the coaches are recruiting. That they're not egotistical -- they're willing to humble themselves and listen to guys that don't see much of the court but know what's going on. "That says a lot about the coaching staff and their ability to scout players as people -- not just players."

Tucker Center. The Seminoles main-tained a steady lead throughout the game in winning its 24th consecutive game at home. The win was the Seminoles’ sixth consecutive in the series against North Florida. The win upped Florida State’s record at the Tucker Center to 66-3 since a victory over Notre Dame on February 7, 2015. Barnes was stellar in his first career overtime game as he scored his first career 3-point field goal and then hit the winner to help the Seminoles earn their 10th consecutive overtime victory. Barnes totaled nine points, five assists, four rebounds, and four steals to help the Seminoles improve to 2-0. The freshman opened and closed out the game with field goals in only his second game and second start in a Florida State uniform. Barnes is a candidate for the Bob Cousy award and has earned spots on the Naismith and Wooden Award watch lists. Indiana moved to 3-2 on the season. The win was Florida State’s 67th in its last 70 games at home. The Seminoles have now won 25 consecu-tive home games and 40 straight non-conference games at home. Florida State turned up the defensive pressure in the overtime period. After surrendering an old-fashioned three-point play to Indiana’s Trayce Jackson-Davis to open the extra session, the Seminoles outscored the Hoosiers 7-2 over the final 4:38 of the extra session. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Anthony Polite scored a career-high 15 points and Balsa Koprivica added a season-best 14 as No. 21 Florida State pulled away late to defeat Gardner-Webb 72-59. Polite scored in double figures for the fourth straight game. The redshirt junior guard did so just six times in the 2019-20 season. The Seminoles outrebounded Gardner Webb 53-30. Polite grabbed nine boards, while Koprivica and RaiQuan Gray added eight apiece. A 7-foot-1 sophomore center, Koprivica was able to use his height advantage, shooting 4 of 5 from the floor and going 6 for 6 at the free throw line. Gray scored just four points but made an impact on the defensive end with eight rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Well-rounded efforts from Polite, Koprivica and Gray ensured the Seminoles would go into the break with positive momentum. CLEMSON, S.C. – Nick Honor scored all of his 13 points in the second half, including a 3-pointer with 7:01 to play that gave Clemson the lead for good as the Tigers defeated Florida State, 77-67. Clyde Trapp led Clemson with 15 points and Al-Amir Dawes had 11. The Tigers were down 36-29 when Balsa Korprivica had a layup to start the second half. That’s when things began to turn for Clemson, as Al-Amir Dawes hit a 3-pointer and Trapp scored three points, tightening the game. The teams traded the lead 13 times over the next 10 minutes, and Korprivica tied things at 54-all. Honor, broke the tie and put Clemson ahead for good with a 3-pointer with 7:01 to play. After John Newman III hit a basket, Honor stole the ball in the backcourt, was fouled and hit both foul shots as Clemson moved ahead 60-54. Florida State (5-2, 1-1) got within 71-65 on Anthony Polite’s 3-pointer with 1:45 to go. But the Seminoles could not catch Clemson and lost for the second time in three games. Evans was 9 of 11 from the floor and Walker 6 of 7 as Florida State finished 41 of 58, including 12 of 18 from 3-point range, to set a program best for shooting percentage in an Atlantic Coast Conference game. It was the program’s fifth-best percentage, spanning all contests, behind a 72.7% shooting performance against Minnesota in the 1979–80 season. Florida State trailed 9-8 before scoring 31 of the next 37 points to take control. Ten different Seminoles scored during the stretch — led by Nathanael Jack’s five points. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – RaiQuan Gray had career highs in points (24) and rebounds (12) as No. 17 Florida State de-feated Wake Forest 92-85 in overtime. The Seminoles tied it at 80 with under a second to go in regulation when Scottie Barnes drove the length of the floor and made a reverse layup. That set up Florida State in the extra period; the Semi-noles tied a national record by winning their 11th straight overtime game. Gray made all 10 of his free-throw attempts and scored the Seminoles’ first four points in overtime. The redshirt junior forward scored in double figures for the sixth straight game and had his second double-double in a month for the Seminoles who were playing their first game in two weeks due to coronavirus issues. Jonah Antonio scored a career-high 23 points, drilling 7 of 8 shots from 3-point range, for Wake Forest. Antonio had the best 3-point shooting game in Wake history with a minimum of eight attempts from long range. Ian DuBose, one of three Wake players who fouled out, added 18 points on 6 of 9 shooting.
