As your state senator in Olympia, I am pleased to offer this latest edition of our Government Guide. This guide provides contact information for elected representatives and important local agencies, to assist you in your dealings with local, state and federal governments.
It is an honor to serve in the Legislature and be your voice at the state Capitol. My goal is to bring the values of the 4th Legislative District to the state Capitol. Our district is blessed with innovative people, resilient small businesses, and vibrant, close-knit communities where we care about one another.
In Olympia I am working hard to keep state spending under control, reduce the size of our state bureaucracy, strengthen our economy, support our charitable organizations, and promote traditional family values. I recognize that every tax dollar we spend in Olympia is a dollar that has come from the hardworking people of this state.
Together we can create a better state for our children and for future generations. You can influence the decisions that will shape our future by making your opinions known to the people who represent you at all levels of government. We are the 4th Legislative District
There are three pools serving the City of Spokane Valley. Valley Mission Pool has a zero-depth entry on one end and is the summer home to thousands, both young and old.
Mount Spokane offers locals and visitors superb skiing in the winter. Here, a chair lift down offers a panoramic view of the Spokane Valley.
There’s nothing like a fresh-air field trip to the Newman Lake area. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and u-pick Christmas trees are all right there.

There are many beautiful golf courses in the 4th Legislative District that provide a challenge for golfers of every level.
These kids are concentrating on what they see under a microscope at the West Valley Outdoor Learning Center. But wait… the critter in the background is trying to get into the act, too!
Spokane Valley Meals on Wheels has been helping the elderly and disabled for 30+ years. Serving over 7,000 meals monthly, regular volunteers do daily checks on the well-being of the program’s recipients.
Spokane’s Business and Industrial park is the region’s largest employment complex with over 120 resident companies employing over 4,500 people. The industrial park contains over 80 buildings ranging in size from 1,200 to 270,000 square feet.

The Spokane River meanders its way through the center of the 4th District.
The Vista House at the summit of Mt. Spokane, built in 1934, offers shelter to picnickers and hikers at Mt. Spokane State Park.
Most folks would agree that a key to achieving the American dream is getting a strong education. This little kindergarten girl at Pasadena Park Elementary concentrates on her work above any distractions.
The orchards of Green Bluff at the foot of Mt. Spokane offer bountiful harvests every fall.

Ah … the smell of pancakes and sausage! Organizations such as the Rotary Club sponsor pancake breakfasts and barbeques throughout the 4th District. Come and get it!!
Our children are our future and kids in the 4th Legislative District have many outdoor activities available to them, providing a positive learning and playing experience!

To register to vote, you must be:
A citizen of the United States
A legal resident of Washington state At least 18 years old by election day
How to register: Mail-in registration forms are available from our county auditor or county elections department as well as many public libraries, schools and other government offices. “Motor Voter” registra-tion is offered when you renew or apply for your driver’s license. Ballots must be postmarked no later than the Monday one week before Election Day.
A change of address must be submitted no later than four weeks before Election Day. If you are registered to vote but miss the deadline you can still vote. Contact your County Elections Office for a ballot.
Ballots must be signed and postmarked or delivered to the county election officer on or before Election Day.

An Invitation to OlympiaWashington’s Capitol Building and its surrounding campus make Olympia one of
the na-tion’s most beautiful state capitals. The Capitol Campus is a year-round tourist destination and the Legislative Building is its centerpiece. Olympia visitors also can enjoy the Temple of Justice where the Supreme Court meets, the Governor’s Mansion, the Old Capitol Building and several veterans’ memorials situated on the 30-acre campus.
Capitol Tours: Public tours are held daily from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. on the hour (registration not required). Larger groups or schools should call 360-902-8880 to schedule a private tour.
How Your Voice Can Be HeardWashington has one of the most open legislatures in the country. Every bill being
consid-ered by the House or Senate must be discussed in open hearings before the appropriate com-mittees. The general public is encouraged to attend committee hearings and to testify on issues important to them. While words like “hearing” and “testify” may sound forbidding, they simply represent your opportunity to come to Olympia and tell lawmakers how you feel before action is taken on an issue. You can leave messages supporting or opposing bills or issues for your state representa-tives, senator and the governor by calling the toll-free Legislative Hotline. The hotline is availa-ble Monday through Friday from 8am to noon and 1 to 4:30pm during the interim. During the legislative session they are available Monday through Friday from 8am until 8pm and Saturday from 9am to 1pm.

The Washington State Legislature has one of the most comprehensive page programs in the United States. Hundreds of students throughout Washington State have an opportunity each year to take part in the legislative process. To serve as a page, a student must meet several requirements including:
Grade point average of C+ or better;
Be at least 14 years of age and have not reached 17th birthday;
Parent/guardian permission;
Principal/teacher permission;
Social Security Number (must be obtained before paging appointment)
