Sendera Directory Submission Wanted
We are fortunate in Sendera to have incredible diversity among our residents. Not only is there cultural diversity and chronological diversity, we are also blessed with a wide variety of skills and professions. It’s good to know that the lady across the street is a medical professional or the guy down the block is a great carpenter. I was really glad to know my next-door-neighbor is an occupational therapist when I fell off my bike and broke my knee cap. I credit her quick action with keeping me out of surgery. We would like to create a directory of residents with their special skills/professions and post it on the Sendera web site. Our community has so much to offer and this is just one more way we can connect with our neighbors. The Sendera Recreation Committee will put together the directory. You can list any skill, craft, business or service that you think may be of interest to other residents. If you make candles and fi x plumbing, list them both. You just never know when someone will want pretty candles once that leak in the bathtub is fi xed. To be in our directory, please contact [email protected] and/or [email protected].
Sendera Good Neighbor EtiquetteSubmitted by Vic Booth
Every noticed how many people walk/bike around our neighborhood. Here are some tips to make Sendera a pedestrian/cyclist-friendly place.
Take care of your front yard. Pull those weeds and edge the lawn. It makes the view a lot better.
Trim trees that overhang the sidewalk. Detours onto the street are dangerous and ducking to miss branches throws off your stride.
Keep bushes cut back, especially at corners, to provide a clear view of traffi c.
If you have any neighborhood etiquette tips, send them in to http://www.senderahoa.com (click the Request link) or by phone (toll-free) to 1-866-473-2573.

SenderaCub Scout Recruiting Coming to Area
SchoolsSubmitted by Charles Mead
Families have as many choices as ever when it comes to spending their free time together. But few of those choices will offer parents fun for their children, while allowing mom and dad to get involved, too. Scouting can offer all this – plus access and opportunity to people and experiences that can help your child succeed in the future. The start of the school year is a great time for families who are interested in getting started in Scouting, as school districts across Central Texas offer “Join Cub Scouting Nights” at their elementary school campuses. “Join Cub Scouting Nights” offer families of boys in the fi rst through fi fth grades the chance to fi nd out what Scouting is all about, and ask leaders questions. “Scouts get out of the house and have fun with friends,” says Capitol Area Council President, Winston Krause. “A child can try so many new things in Scouting, and moms and dads can be there with their children as they fi gure out what they like and what they don’t. The most important thing is that no matter what a Scout tries, he promises to do his best.” Scouting aims to serve families in many ways, now and in the future. According to research by Harris Interactive, men who were Scouts are more likely than men who were never Scouts to graduate from high school and college, earn a higher annual household income, value family relationships, have lifelong friendships and believe in helping others. “I like what they have taught my son, in teaching him how to be a leader,” says Sandra Conrad, mother and Scout leader. “He’s learned leadership skills and he has the tools and he can move forward from here.” Cub Scouts and their families can take advantage of the Capitol Area Council’s new 150-acre “Cub World” facility at Camp Tom Wooten, on the LCRA Lost Pines Scout Reservation in Bastrop. Every new Scout that joins this August or September will receive a free Pinewood Derby car kit courtesy of Gatti’s Pizza - and will be invited to an exclusive practice of the University of Texas Longhorn football team, hosted by former Scout, Mack Brown. For more information about Scouting or “Join Cub Scouting Night”, go online to www.bsacac.org and look for the “Join Cub Scouting Night” link on the home page. If you don’t see information for the Join Cub Scouting Night at your child’s school, contact James Johnson at (512) 926-6363 ext. 33 or [email protected].

: Architectural Control Committee Guidelines by Eric Steen, Architectural Committee Chair
All improvements are required to have Architectural Control Committee (ACC) approval, but not all improvements are specifi cally covered in the Declaration of Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions (DCCR). To handle this the ACC provides guidelines to ensure that improvements made are tasteful, do not detract from the livability and/or value of our neighborhood, and are balanced with the needs and desires of the community. Exterior lights can add hours of fun to the warm summer nights, but please be considerate of your neighbors. Improperly used lights can light up your neighbor’s bedroom as well as your back yard. Exterior Lighting
Temporary holiday decorations/lighting are not considered an improvement and therefore do not require the AC approval prior to use. The following are examples of what is considered permanent exterior lighting requiring pre-approval from the ACC: a. Backyard fl ood lights b. Walkway/driveway decorative or safety lights. c. Lampposts Your planned exterior lighting improvement must be compatible with the decor of our neighborhood. The type of exterior lighting you are planning to install cannot

In the Garden It’s just too darn hot to be doing much planting in the garden. Unless you have new plantings that have to be watered more frequently, stick to a deep watering every fi ve to seven days. Mulch all bare earth areas to help retain the moisture you put into the soil. Now is a good time to plan for the fall garden, which I think is the best time to garden in Central Texas. You can design new beds, have your soil tested, and check out information at gardening web sites like Central Texas Gardener (www.klru.org/ctg), The Natural Gardener (www.naturalgardeneraustin.com), and Zilker Botanical Garden (www.zilkergarden.org), and do it all in air conditioned comfort.
Spotlight Plant Rockrose (Pavonia lasiopetala) has a lot to offer the Sendera gardener. It does well in our shallow limestone soil, takes little water once established, blooms all summer, is winter hardy and qualifi es for the Water-Wise Rebate offered by the City of Austin. What more can you ask. The one pictured here started as a 1 gallon pot last summer and is doing just fi ne even though it was covered in ice this winter. It gets full sun and the occasional taste of organic fertilizer. It can grow to be about 4’ X 4’ but a little shearing keeps it compact and blooming. You can cut it back by about 1/3 in late winter.
be too bright for its intended use. For example, using the long fl uorescent tube lighting for patio lighting illuminates more than the patio area and can be a nuisance to surrounding neighbors. The number of light fi xtures needed should be appropriate and directional lights, such as fl oodlights, should be properly aimed. Too many, or improperly aimed, light fi xtures can also be a nuisance to surrounding neighbors.
