Preview Our Sharing Our Love annual Thanksgiving luncheon (Nov. 20th) catered by Cracker Barrel will cost only $5.00! This luncheon will include our favorite turkey and ham with many sides and desserts. Wanted you to know, in advance. We want you and friends to come and enjoy our special fellowship of the year. We LOVE GUESTS.

Commemorative Connection

We continue to encourage our members and non-members to enjoy reading the many stories by using the internet. Members are able to read through the “members” section of Netherwood’s website and non-members, (easily accessed) by e-mailing your name to [email protected]. A non-member does not need to create a Dropbox account, just click off the x in the upper, right-hand corner. It's that EASY! Enjoy!

If you need assistance to get to the Commemorative Connection please contact me

(Jim Guthrie) for a hand-holding session. Then, take the Commemorative Connection Challenge below.

A Need Our senior group is again without a leader. May we join together through prayer to our loving Lord to guide the Elders to make this a priority in selecting a leader. We can assist the Eldership in this process by thoughtfully selecting a person(s), individually, for the consideration of the Elders. Please pray on this matter to be, as the Lord wills, successful to continue in our efforts to better serve Him.

A Personal Note I (Jim Guthrie) am now officially an octogenarian (80). It is with thanksgiving that there is love for me and Mary. Too, I am grateful that so many displayed their love in sweet and kind words, cards, and attendance. What a Party! The efforts of Nancy Clements, Kayla Scheer, Missy Guthrie, and many others made this party a wonderful occasion of fellowship and fun!!!

page 27 and you will see that someone wrote a story called "The Snake Scare". Open the issue where it appeared (June 2010 Volume 6 Issue 6). The Snake Scare story is on page 7 of that issue. Read the story and answer Question 1 below. Then go back two pages to page 5 and read "How to Dance in the Rain". Answer Question 2 below. Go back two more pages to page 3. Read about a deacon who retired and answer Question 3 below. Bring your answers to the October luncheon for a chance to win a valuable prize.

Questions: 1. What is the full name of the son responsible for The Snake Scare? 2. What disease did the gentleman's wife have? 3. What Netherwood deacon retired in 1991 after serving for 35 years?

Pets with Personality Do you like watching pets do funny things? Of course you do; it’s one of the better portions of ‘Funniest Home Videos’. Your pets are special to you, so when they do something cute or unexpected, the owner is either delighted or—let’s say surprised.

We’ll start off by saying that pets certainly know where they belong. Cats, especially, have a tendency to roam if they are

partly outdoor pets to start with. Still they know where home sweet home is.

The only cat story I have is about my own ‘Kitty Tom’ which I had as a child. Although he stayed outdoors mostly, he was allowed in the front room from time to time. He was a nice looking tabby of yellow/brown with a little stripe look to him. Kitty Tom was a smart cat. I was always playing jacks in the front room and sometimes my small rubber ball would roll under the couch. Very often I would retrieve the ball by using my twirling baton and push with my hand. One day I started to walk into the front room and I could hardly believe what I saw. There was Kitty Tom with my baton and he was pushing with his paw right under that couch. Yes, the ball was under there! I ran to tell mother what I had witnessed thinking she wouldn’t believe me. She very calmly responded, “Tom was just being a ‘copy-cat’ because he has seen you so many times doing that.” Of course she was the first to tell daddy when he came home.

The next most outstanding thing that Kitty Tom did I shall always remember. Keep in mind that Kitty Tom allowed me to put a baby bonnet on him and push him in a doll carriage, but that same Tom kept dogs away and would jump on their backs sometimes. One day I started walking out towards the back yard where the wash-room and garage area was located. Kitty Tom was facing me and I quickly noticed that he looked really mean with his stance and even a little hiss right at me! Of course I stopped and thought, “What is wrong with you?” I was starting to worry that Kitty Tom was sick or something and then my eyes came down between myself and Tom…sitting on the ground was a giant tarantula!! When I told my granddaughter, Alivia, this story, she immediately responded, "DA TA DA , SUPER TOM!!"

Now we need to go into the dog department We’ll talk about -2-Jack Russell terriers which belong to our son, Martin. The first one to expound upon has the name Gilligan. Now Gilligan was always getting into jams, and on one particular day he was busy chasing a squirrel. The squirrel ran into some kind of pipe. Here goes Gilligan in hot pursuit. The only problem is he does not fit in that pipe. He was able to get the head in and that’s as far as he got. After a bit, he starts squirming and pulling with his front paws. Then he puts it into four wheel drive, as Martin put it, and he pulls with all his might. He is still not able to get out. Martin decides he’ll try out his duck butter? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of duck butter. Somehow Martin manages to get enough butter up

on Gilligan, (it was his ears causing the resistance) and finally he gets out. Martin said it took about an hour of bathing that Gilligan to get all that duck butter off.

The next Jack Russell Martin now has is named Solaris. I have actually watched this next ‘thing’ that Solaris does and can say that it is pretty entertaining. Actually I watched

all the Jack Russell dogs they showed on YouTube doing this same funny trick and none of them did it as well as Solaris…..what Martin does is take the water hose and starts spraying in any direction. Here comes Solaris. He thinks that water is some kind of monster. He starts jumping straight up growling and fighting as fast and furious as his little body will go.

His mouth is chomping and you can’t decide if he is mad or having great fun. Anyway, he should be the one on YouTube!

The next little doggy coming up is a dachshund by the name of Little Bit. He belongs to David and Vicki Nestor. Well, he’s actually more mid-size for a weinie dog. It was during the winter months and the back yard had a small patch of ice which seemed to bother Little Bit. David and Vicki were watching as Little Bit backed his ears and took a flying jump so he would not have to deal with that ice whenever he was coming back to get inside. Now the problem is short legs, long body, so his back feet are still slipping at ninety miles an hour to make the successful leap. Speaking of Super Man, I could just see him with a little cape trying to make that jump. David and Vicki got so tickled, they could hardly stop laughing.

Another episode was when David was taking Little Bit for a walk, (maybe it was still a dark out) and evidently something spooked Little Bit. L.B. was attached to a collar with a leash but when he became spooked, somehow, someway, Houdini Little Bit was able to quickly get out of that collar and make a mad dash back to the house! I would have liked to have seen that myself.

The next pet with personality is about a pet pig who belonged to Bob and Stephanie Lunsford. His name was Abraham and he started out as the runt of a litter. It was a

neighbor friend who gave him away. So at first Abraham could literally fit in Bob’s shirt pocket. He was reddish in his coloring and he was so cute and so loved that he felt like he was part of the family and the Lunsfords thought so too. In fact, when Stephanie and Bob gave me this information they had the title ‘Abraham Lunsford’. Ha.

One day, Abraham, when he was still young, developed a little digestive problem

and so Stephanie calls the vet and exclaimed, “my baby is sick!” They said “ma’am, this is an animal hospital.” Stephanie said, “I know, my baby pig is sick.” At any rate baby pig got well and grew strong and big. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, when Abraham wanted to take a nap he just headed straight for his real baby cradle. Yep, I’d like to see that.

Another thing is that the kids rode him like a horse when he was bigger. Now, let me stop right here and say that it would be much more entertaining to hear Bob tell stories about Abraham than my writing it down. Maybe we can get him to tell some more funny stories for our Senior luncheons.

Anyway, to complete this story about Abraham, he is now big and strong. So one day Abraham became Samson. He decides he wants inside his house and without wasting any time he just stuck his nose against the front door and pushed it right down, hinges and all. Poor Abraham did not realize he would be let go for that incident. So, after tears and anguish, they had to say good-by to Abraham. He was given back to the original owners.

Soon after, these same neighbors brought over some fresh bacon. Stephanie said, “Please tell me this is not Abraham.” They said “No, we would never slaughter Abraham.” So Abraham was able to live the rest of his life in good hands.

As Porky Pig says, "th-tha-that- that’s all folks!"

Let’s Get Personal

Making Word Work for You (continued from September) Let's assume that you want all your documents to be in Times New Roman, 12 pt, with Single line spacing and with no spacing following a paragraph. Here is how you accomplish that permanent change.

1. Start Word with a blank document on the screen. 2. Type your first name. 3. Select your name by dragging the mouse over it. 4. On the ribbon choose Times New Roman and 12 pt

. Your name which is still highlighted should be in the new Font and Font Size.

5. With your name still selected, on the ribbon click the arrow in the lower right-hand corner of the Paragraph group:

6. In the Paragraph box change Spacing After to 0 pt and change Line spacing to

Single. Click OK to leave the box.

7. With your name still selected, on the Ribbon in the Styles group right-click the

Normal style and select Update Normal to Match Selection.

Page 10: Senior Connection€¦ · Now we need to go into the dog department We’ll talk about -2-Jack Russell terriers which belong to our son, Martin. The first one to expound upon has

8. Once again right–click the Normal style and this time select Modify.

9. In the box that opens click the choice New documents based on this template

and click OK to exit the box.

The next document you open will have the settings you have just chosen. Remember those were Times New Roman, 12 pt, no space following paragraphs, and Single spacing. Should you wish to set some other font, font size, etc. you now know how to do that and how to make it permanent.

Movie Review:

You Gotta Stay Happy (1948)

In New York, the spoiled Diana "Dee Dee" Dillwood (Joan Fontaine) is an indecisive millionaire

that has broken with her previous 6 fiancées. Her uncle and her psychiatrist convince Diana to

get married to Henry Benson. In this romantic comedy, she marries hastily and realizes her

mistake on her honeymoon in New York.

Though it is her wedding night, she decides not to consummate the union and so ends up hiding

in the bridal suite of pilot Marvin "Marv" Payne (James Stewart) next door. Payne, who owns an

air flight company with two old airplanes with his friend Bullets (Eddie Albert) is expecting to

rest to fly to California the next morning. Payne’s airplane cargo company is facing financial

ruin. He assumes that the frightened girl is poor and homeless and so takes her in. She then

overdoses on sleeping pills and cannot wake up the next morning. Marv and Bullets take her to

the airport and she convinces them to take her to California with them along with a chimpanzee;

a soppy couple that has just married; an embezzler with a wallet full of money; a coffin with a

body; and frozen seafood. After a storm, passenger and crew are stranded in a farm of a

hospitable family where Dee Dee learns that she will find her true love when she kisses the right

man.

About the film:

The leather jacket James Stewart wears is his own jacket that he wore while serving in

World War II. Also, he earned the highest military rank of any film star as a Brigadier

General in the Air Corps Reserve.

Co-star Joan Fontaine was pregnant during the filming of the movie and gave birth to a

daughter a few months later.
