Karzai reviews process forAfghanistan air strikes

MANAMA (Bahrain), 13 Dec — US naval officialshosted Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai aboard anAmerican carrier this week to assure him that the militaryis taking all precautions to avoid civilian casualties duringairstrikes in his country.

Brain enzyme may play key rolein controlling appetite, weight gain

WASHINGTON, 13 Dec — US researchers have found that over activity of a brainenzyme may play a role in preventing weight gain and obesity. The findings were reported Friday in the journal Cell Metabolism. To understand what drives hunger and causes metabolic disease, many scien-tists have focused on the hypothalamus, an almond-sized structure located deepwithin the brain that controls body temperature, hunger, and thirst. Specialized nerve cells in the hypothalamus sense whether the body containsadequate amounts of nutrients and stored body fat. The cells then send out signalstelling other parts of the brain to adjust food intake, metabolic rates, and physicalactivity accordingly — keeping the body’s caloric intake in balance with caloriesburned.—Internet

Fatty acids in formula can boost immunityEVANSVILLE,13 Dec —

Infants fed formula DHA,an omega-3 fatty acid, andARA, an omega-6 fattyacid, show better respira-tory health during winter,a US pediatrician said.

Dr Laura Jana, pediatri-cian and author of “Head-ing Home with Your New-born; from Birth to Real-ity” said that human milkis widely considered to bethe optimal source of nu-trition for infants, since itprovides a variety of bio-logical factors — includ-ing antibodies, which helpsupport the developmentof the infant’s immune

system.But there is emerging

science that suggests thatmothers who cannot orchose not to breastfeed canimprove their infants’ res-piratory health by feedingan infant formula that in-cludes DHA and ARA —important nutrients foundnaturally in breast milk,Jana said.

Infants fed EnfamilLIPIL during the first yearof life experienced im-proved immune outcomes, including improved respi-ratory health, compared toinfants fed the prior formu-lation without DHA and

ARA — a health benefitshown for the first threeyears of life, Jana added.

“This is intriguing newsfor moms who choose tofeed their babies infant for-mula,” Jana, said in a state-ment. “DHA and ARAhave been increasinglyrecognized as importantnutrients in infant nutri-tion. “The fact that they arefound naturally in breastmilk and as added nutri-ents in infant formulameans that all infants, whether they are fed breastmilk or infant formula, stand to benefit.”

Response to alcohol has geneticcomponent

SAN FRANCISCO,13 Dec— US researchers haveidentified a region of thehuman genome that ap-pears to determine howstrongly drinkers feel theeffects of alcohol.

Researchers at the Uni-versity of California, SanFrancisco, Ernest GalloClinic and ResearchCenter, found that aDNA sequence variation, known as a single nucle-otide polymorphism, onchromosome 15 is signifi-cantly associated with thelevel of response to alco-hol and could signal thegenetic factors thataffect alcohol abuse.Theresearchers investigatedtwo sentinel single nucle-otide polymorphismmarkers — RS1051730and RS8034191 — thatpreviously had been asso-ciated with nicotine de-

pendence and lung cancer. They found a strong asso-ciation with the firstmarker.

“We know that thelevel of response to alco-hol is heritable and thinkthere are genetic factorsbehind 40 percent to 60percent of alcohol de-pendence, but until now,the chromosomal loca-tions of these factors havenot been clear for the most

common forms of alcoholuse disorders,” senior au-thor Raymond L. White, director of the GalloCenter, said in a statement.“By understanding whichportion of our geneticmakeup influences our re-sponse to alcohol, we canbegin to understand whattype of treatments mightbe most successful inhelping reduce alcohol usedisorders.”—Internet

Earth enjoys full moon close-up

The moon will appear high in the night sky.INTERNET

LONDON,13 Dec — Afull moon has occurredcloser to the Earth than ithas done at any time for thepast 15 years.

The Moon’s ellipticalorbit means its distancefrom the Earth is not con-stant. It was a littleover 350,000km away as itpassed over the northernhemisphere, about30,000km closer thanusual.Astronomers said themoon would appearbrighter and larger than

usual, but the sky in the UKwas almost completelycovered by cloud.

Friday’s full moon waspredicted to appear up to14% bigger and 30%brighter than other fullmoons this year, accordingto NASA. The Moon’s or-bit is elliptical, meaning itdoes not follow a circularbut rather an oval path.

It has reached the pointwhere this oval orbit isnearest to the Earth.

“It’s only every few

years that a full moon hap-pens to coincide with thepart of the Moon’s orbitwhen its closest to theEarth,” said Marek Kukula,an astronomer at the UK’sRoyal Observatory. Themoon appears largest as itrises and sets, but this is apsychological illusion, DrKukula said. “When it’sclose to the horizon, ourbrain interprets it as beingbigger than it actually is,this is called the moon illu-sion,” he said.–Internet

Kidney treatment may by denied due to costCAMBRIDGE,13 Dec — A British on-

cologist says he is dismayed that kid-ney cancer patients may be denied fournew treatments due to cost.

Dr Tim Eisen of the University ofCambridge reports in BJU Internationalthat the National Institute for Healthand Clinical Excellence has provision-ally decided sunitinib, sorafenib, temsirolimus and interferon plusbevacizumab are too costly.

While none of these new drugs curethe condition, they sometimes can ex-

tend life, Eisen said. For instance, somepatients taking sunitinib get an extrayear.

The variability of the natural historyof kidney cell carcinoma makes it pos-sible a minority of patients may benefitvery significantly, Eisen says, but “noprovision is made for the importance ofgaining even a few months of extra lifefor patients, despite the fact that thesebenefits are deemed to be extremelyimportant by all patient groups.”
