Alzheimer's disease vaccines have entered the final stage of testing at The Memory Clinic in Bennington, VT.
According to Dr. Lisa Catapano-Friedman, Medical Director of The Memory Clinic, “The Alzheimer's Vaccine is an entirely new approach to treating this disease. Current medications
only treat the symptoms of the disease, but do not address the underlying cause of Alzheimer's disease - the loss of brain cells. The vaccine has been shown to significantly reduce the loss of brain cells and in doing so preserve memory and other abilities.”
The basic logic of the approach is that it is possible to use the body's own immune system to fight off invading organisms and in doing so to treat disease. In the case of the Alzheimer's disease vaccine, the immune system is mobi-lized to attack the senile plaques that destroy brain cells. By doing this, researchers believe that this approach can slow and eventually halt the progression of the disease.
There are multiple versions of vaccine that are currently being tested. Patients may be
eligible to participate in the clinical trials if they have a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or if they have concerns about their memory and undergo an evaluation at The Memory Clinic. Patients already taking Alzheimer's disease medications may stay on these drugs (Aricept, Exelon, Razadyne, Namenda) while taking the
vaccine. There is no charge to patients or their insurance for the vaccine or any other procedures related to the clinical trial.
“The Alzheimer's Vaccine has generated considerable excite-ment in both the Alzheimer's disease research community and among patients and caregivers, said Dr. Paul R. Solomon, Clinical Director of
The Memory Clinic in Bennington. “The results of a study that our patients participated in last year, recently presented at the International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease in Chicago, showed that the progression of memory loss was cut in half for a large group of Alzheimer's disease patients who received the vaccine,” according to Solomon.
If the current clinical trials continue to show benefit, it is likely that the vaccine will be sub-mitted to the FDA for approval in the next few years.
The Memory Clinic has been involved in vaccine trials for more than 4 years. To learn more about these trials please call The Memory Clinic 802-447-1409 or toll free 866-646-3362.

by Carol Brace The Centers for Living and Rehabilitation
will participate with other facilities nationwide by observing National Nursing Home Week, which starts Mothers Day May 10 and contin-ues until May 16. Many residents and patients are the people that planted the seeds that have made our community grow stronger. They have been the teachers, the business people, the parents and other central figures who produced all of the good things that we now enjoy.
Facilities throughout the nation celebrate
these dates by inviting their friends and neigh-bors to participate in special events.
The Centers for Living and Rehabilitation is partnering with the TriState Pennysaver News and Senior News Guide to present a "Across the Generations Coloring Contest". Residents at the facility will post the submissions. A com-mittee from the Resident Council will judge all the entries. Prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners by Officers of the Council.
Each week children from the United Counseling Day Care Programparticipate with Centers for Living and Rehabilitation Residents.

Nurturing a Love that Lasts
On Thursday, May 7, at 5:00 p.m. a new exhibit entitled Back Road to a Hidden Valley will open at The Gallery at Equinox Village. Delicious hors d’oeuvres will be offered by Executive Chef Glenn Blackledge and guests will have the opportunity to meet the artist.
Renowned local photographer Wayne N.T. Fuji’i has a career spanning 30 years in pho-tojournalism, specializing in archi-tecture and l a n d s c a p e architecture. As both edi-tor and pho-t o g r a p h e r for Global Architecture he has traveled throughout Europe, Asia, North Africa and the Americas with his work featured in architectural publications and exhibits worldwide.
Fuji’i is known for his skillful use of available light in creating his images. His current work focuses on expanding this notion by capturing the luminosity and translucency evoked by the ever-changing light
of the distinct seasons inherent in the rural land-scapes and life in Vermont.
Inspired by ancient Japanese artists Hokusai and Koetsu, above all Fuji’i admires the 17th centu-ry haiku master Basho. The poignancy of Basho’s observations and the brevity of words with which he masterfully translated glimpses of the world around
him taught Fuji’i a way of observ-ing and a p p r e c i -ating the extraordi-nary in the other wise o r d i n a r y scene.
B a c k Road To A Hidden Valley focuses on Vermont land-scapes around the Landgrove and Weston area. The exhibit will be open to the public daily from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. through June 5. For more information or to RSVP to the opening, please call Lisa Fairley at 802-362-4061 or e-mail [email protected].
Equinox Village is a senior living community located in Manchester Center, Vermont.

Where would you go for a free glaucoma test? A free mini-mas-sage? Blood pressure and cholesterol checks? Information about subsidized health insurance, caring for an aging parent, outdoor safety, seat belts, and helping your kids stay safe and healthy?
Do all of this and more at Grace Cottage Hospital's second annual “Spring Into Health” Community Health Fair on Saturday, May 16, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Leland & Gray Union High School and on the Townshend Common. Everyone is welcome, and it's free!
Kids can try out the inflatable obstacle course, the climbing wall, and the bike rodeo; tour the state fire safety house; look at blood through a microscope; meet a state police K-9 dog; and maybe even talk on the radio with WTSA's Tim Johnson, who will host a live broadcast during the event.
Everyone can try out belly dancing and yoga, learn about acu-puncture, see the DHART helicopter up close, and learn some-thing new about living a safer, healthier life.
Over 50 area non-profit health and safety organizations will present information about their services at this fun and informa-tive free event. The NewBrook Fire Department will sell healthy snacks and lunch. Everyone is welcome to attend, but please leave pets at home.
In conjunction with the Community Health Fair, the American Red Cross will hold a blood drive at the school from 9:30a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Rutland Regional Medical Center's Marrow Donor

The latest dietary guidelines recommend that adults get three servings of dairy products daily. Don’t think you have to consume three 8 oz. glasses of milk each day. Some other choices are a cup of low-fat yo-gurt for lunch or a snack, a half cup of cottage cheese added to a salad for lunch or a third of a cup of ricotta cheese added to a noodle dish or lasagna. An ounce or two of low-fat cheese can be added to a vegetable salad to increase the protein as well as calcium. Shred Par-mesan cheese over pasta to in-crease flavor as well as add a small amount of calcium!
If you will not be home when your meal is delivered, please
