“A proud sense of belonging pervades all and the atmosphere is both open and welcoming to visitors.”

Welcome
If you were to ask current parents why they chose Brighton College for
their son or daughter, they would tell you that the children here are
cheerful, balanced, at ease with themselves and each other - yet excited
and enthused by the challenges before them. They might add that
Brighton College succeeds in combining academic excellence with a wealth
of extra-curricular opportunities, all underpinned by a deep commitment to
the individual needs and enthusiasms of each child.
As Headmaster, I believe passionately in the importance of the individual.
Every child at Brighton College is valued for his or her own sake,
encouraged to develop his or her talents to the full in a community where
there are no stereotypes and where every achievement, however small, is
noticed.
If this ethos appeals to you and your family, do please visit us on an Open
Morning, or alternatively make an appointment to visit the school on a
normal teaching day. I would be delighted to welcome you.

Commitment to the needs of the individual underpins
College life. Pastoral care is centred upon the House to
which each boy or girl belongs, under the direction of a
Housemaster or Housemistress and a dedicated team of
tutors. This contact between pupil and tutor marks the
start of each day when boys and girls can discuss any issues
of pastoral or academic concern. This is supplemented by
weekly tutorial periods for all boys and girls.
Bonds between year groups are strong. Sixth form pupils
play a particularly important role in helping new boys and
girls to find their feet and in encouraging them to get
involved in all that the College has to offer.
This strong sense of community is reinforced through a
morning chapel service for the whole school, providing an
opportunity for quiet reflection at the start of the day. The
chaplain is always on hand to provide further guidance and
support for pupils.
“Pupils are mindful of the feelings, values and beliefs of others.”Independent Schools Inspectorate
The Individual
“Teaching is animated, enthusiastic and exciting.”Independent Schools Inspectorate
Teaching at all levels at Brighton College is characterised
by passion and inspiration. Classes are places where
the excitement of learning is tangible. Highly qualified
teachers demonstrate a love for their subject that is
always evident beyond the classroom in a wide range
of talks, lectures, trips and other academically enriching
experiences.
The Gilbert Scott Library at the very heart of the school
is a rich resource centre, providing pupils with traditional
support alongside generous IT provision.

It is the College’s firm belief that every pupil should be given opportunities to
perform artistically, either within the school or beyond. To this end, each year
sees a vast range of musical, dramatic and dance productions from informal
teatime concerts to major performances open to the public.
‘Newspeak’ is a pupil driven publication which appears termly and which
features a wealth of animated debate and creative writing talent.
“There are just so many opportunities for our children to perform here; it’s wonderful.”Parent
The Arts
“Art is a vibrant and successful department where pupils are nurtured by enthusiastic
teaching to achieve unforeseen potential.”Independent Schools Inspectorate
No visitor to the College fails to remark on the breathtaking
array of pupil work on display in every corner of the school.
The Burstow Gallery, adjacent to the Great Hall, regularly hosts
pupil exhibitions as well as shows by professional artists.
In the Art School itself, pupils develop a heightened awareness
of their artistic nature. Colour, form and texture are explored
in innovative and challenging ways leading to exciting and
thought-provoking works.
Art is complemented by Photography, one of the College’s
newest and most popular subjects in the Sixth Form.

The College’s consistently high sporting profile in boys’ and girls’ games is evident
at county and national level. Whilst sport is an integral part of College life, the wide
range of choices on offer means that all pupils are able to participate in an activity at a
level with which they feel comfortable.
A number of specialist coaches work alongside the games staff to help pupils perform
to the highest standards.
“The provision for games for all pupils is excellent; they form an integral part of College life.”Independent Schools Inspectorate
Sports
“The very good emphasis on pupils’ pastoral care helps them develop successfully as confident,
caring and responsible young people.” Independent Schools Inspectorate
We offer a wide range of boarding options, full, weekly, flexi or occasional. In today’s
hectic world, we recognise the importance of the balance between school and family
life; hence the increased popularity of our weekly boarding option.
With no Saturday school, weekends are a time for full boarders to enjoy a more
leisurely routine. They can choose to take part in a weekend activity, visit the city of
Brighton for shopping or the cinema, or simply relax in the House.

New entrants to the Sixth Form are actively encouraged and welcomed.
Once pupils enter the Sixth Form, College life becomes markedly
different. We recognise that the Sixth Form is a bridge between school
and university, and respond accordingly. As leaders of the school, all
Sixth Formers have the opportunity to take on responsibilities, either
within the House, in teams or through prefectship.
The healthy size of the two year groups in the Sixth Form ensures that
the College is able to offer a very wide range of courses at AS and
A2 level. The nearby Skidelsky Modern Studies Centre, is one of the
buildings reserved exclusively for Sixth Form use.

Beginning with the summer adventure week in the Fourth Form, each year group has a trip
incorporated into its timetable. In addition, all departments organise a wealth of excursions to
enhance the delivery of their curriculums.
There are also many other trips which pupils may opt into if they wish, from an art weekend in Paris
or an Upper Fifth history trip to the Somme battlefields, to a biology expedition to Honduras or a
cricket tour to Sri Lanka.
Pupils also have the opportunity to take part in two partnership programmes with independent
schools in North East America.
“The many opportunities for expeditions and trips, both at home and abroad, add cultural vibrancy to academic study…”Independent Schools Inspectorate
