What is a QCE?

• QCE stands for ‘Queensland Certificate of Education’ and is Queensland’s senior school qualification. It is internationally recognised and provides evidence of senior schooling achievements.

• The QCE is awarded to eligible students (usually at the end of Year 12) by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA).

• The requirements for a QCE are different to those for tertiary entrance. A QCE does not give you an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

QCE Eligibility

• The rules around the requirements to obtain a QCE are set by the QCAA. To gain a QCE a student must meet 4 criteria:

Collecting points towards a QCE

• Students collect points for Units 1 & 2 of General, Essential and Applied subjects as soon as they satisfactorily complete the unit

• Students must pass BOTH Units 3 & 4 to obtain the other two potential points per General, Essential and Applied courses

• Students must pass Units 3 & 4 for subjects to contribute towards core

Collecting points towards a QCE (Continued)

• Duplication of learning is now enforced – Examples include• Building and Construction Skills (applied subject) and Certificate I

Construction are considered duplication and only one will contribute towards the QCE

• Only 8 points from any VET training package can contribute towards the QCE Eg Certificate II and Certificate III Hospitality would only contribute 8 points in total towards a QCE

• Any overlap in VET competencies could result in a certificate being ‘worth fewer’ than the usually assigned points

What is a QCIA?

• QCIA stands for Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement. A QCIA recognises and reports the achievements of students whose learning is part of an individual learning program.

• To be eligible to participate in a QCIA, students must have impairments or difficulties in learning that are not primarily due to socioeconomic, cultural or linguistic factors.

• The certificate is an official record that students have completed at least 12 years of education. It provides students with a summary of their skills and knowledge that they can present to employers and training providers.

What types of subject are offered at Lowood?

Lowood SHS offers a range of subjects, including General, Essential and Applied and Vocational Qualifications, for students to be able to set themselves up for their next step after school including:• gaining an ATAR (to apply for university entry directly from school)• gaining a Certificate III or above qualification (may allow entry direct from

school to some universities or allow for university application after a student has left school)

General Subjects

• General Subjects are suited to students who are interested in pathways beyond senior secondary schooling that lead to tertiary studies.

• Results in General subjects contribute to the awarded of a QCE and can contribute to an ATAR.

• Students will need high level underpinning skills in literacy, numeracy and 21st century skills to be successful in these subjects.

• Students must have undertaken pre-requisite subjects and achieved a pre-requisite grade in Year 10 to be able to enter general subjects in Years 11 and 12.

Essential and Applied Subjects

• Applied subjects are suited to students who are primarily interested in pathways beyond senior secondary schooling that lead to vocational education and training or work.

• Results in Applied subjects contribute to the award of a QCE and one Applied subject result may contribute to an ATAR.

• At Lowood SHS we do not recommend students wishing to undertake an ATAR enter an Applied subject.

• Students will need solid foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, applied learning, community connections and core skills for work from which to work in an Applied subject.

Pathways Options

• Using all of this information Lowood has developed packages of suggested subjects.

• The packages are aimed at giving students a rounded skill set that tells a story to a potential employer.

• Although the packages are designed around an industry area this does not limit students ability to use the skills they gain in other industries after they leave school.

Points to note

• All subjects/qualifications are contingents on gaining enough students to run

• Some certificates are subject to partnering with appropriate Registered Training Organisations if she certificate is not on Lowood SHS Scope of Registration

• Many of the packages will require some financial contribution from the student/family

Prerequisite information

• Prerequisites are courses of study and required academic achievement to enter specific senior subjects. These are set by the school taking into consideration the complexities and assumed knowledge that students require to be successful in the course.

• This information is based on historical data of students undertaking courses of study and their success in those subjects.

Wednesday Program

• With a growing number of students accessing TAFE and other outside provider courses, it was decided that Lowood would commit to providing opportunities to all students across Years 10, 11 and 12 in 2021 to participate in these courses.

• We have sought partnerships and added qualifications to our scope of registration to provide a broad range of offerings on a Wednesday.

• Wednesday qualifications run for one year only (unless otherwise specified).

• Students are required to commit to these programs for the full year and no subject changes will be made after week 3 of term 1.
