vancouver seniorsÕ guide 20154
W e l c o m eAwise person once toldme that there’s no point in complaining about aging. “Justdo it well and gracefully,” they said.
Wisewords indeed. The seniors I’ve observedwhoare themost graceful, anddoingwell, are often the ones who looked into the future, planned and were alwaysthoughtful about their next move. They were also very aware of the services andopportunities available to them.
That’s why we’ve created this guide to help you become aware of the services andopportunities in Vancouver. The seniors segment of the population is growing, and as a result specialists and experts from health to finances are ready to cater toyour very specific needs.
We hope it helps. A city depends on its elders for balance, perspective andguidance. May we all age well in Vancouver wisely and gracefully.

office of new seniors advocate toopen march 31Sandra Thomas | [email protected]
One of the biggest stories of interest toseniors last year had to be the appointmentof a dedicated advocate by the provincialgovernment in March 2014.The new appointment was made under the
Seniors Advocate Act of B.C., proclaimed lawin February 2013, as part of the provincialgovernment’s Seniors Action Plan. Sending astrong message to seniors across the province, newly appointed advocate Isobel Mackenziewasted no time in creating a workingdocument entitled The Journey Begins:Together we can do better, a 16-page reportshe hopes will improve life for older adults inB.C. It’s the first such appointment in Canada.Under the act, Mackenzie can advocate on
behalf of seniors on issues such as health andpersonal care, transportation, housing andincome supports. To that end, Mackenzie’soffice will monitor services to seniors, provide information and referrals, analyzesystemic issues related to health and providerecommendations to governments andservice providers. Mackenzie is scheduled tobegin work in her new Victoria-based officeMarch 31.
The executive director of the South GranvilleSeniors Centre is hopeful the advocate willbenefit B.C.’s growing elderly population.“Support for seniors is getting smaller and
smaller,” said Clemencia Gomez. “I hopethis seniors advocate will help us get morefunding or at least better solutions.”Mackenzie promises to protect her
independence while representing seniors
outside of government influence.“I have seen first-hand the issues, the
challenges and the choices facing ourseniors, their families and their caregivers,”Mackenzie said at a press conferencefollowing the announcement last year.“I have witnessed the profound desireof seniors to maintain their dignity andtheir independence. And on more thanone occasion, I have been humbled by thereminder that seniors are individuals whohave their own ideas about how they seethemselves aging.”Gomez hopes Mackenzie is aware of the
vital role seniors centres play when it comesto helping older adults live healthy, dignifiedlives.“Seniors centres are the preventative
group,” said Gomez. “We’re the ones whohelp seniors stay healthy and independentthrough programs and lunches. Thegovernment should support seniors centresbecause they save themmoney.”She added senior populations are rapidly
growing in all communities and that need forsupport must be addressed.“So the government should provide more
funding,” said Gomez. “There have been cutsto so many programs like home support andcommunity support.”
“Seniors centres are thepreventative groups...who help seniors
stay healthy and independent”CLEMEnCIA GOMEz

According to a program coordinator withVancouver Community College, the numberof Baby Boomers and seniors continuing theireducation is growing.“Some people are committed to lifelong
learning,” said Jennifer Gossen, “but othersare taking courses to keep their skills currentwithin the industry they work.”Gossen said while there are still
many seniors pursuing hobbies, such asphotography, how to use a computer orcooking, others are enrolled in programs suchas graphic design and technical writing ortaking management and leadership courses asa way to stay current.“Many older adults attending courses today
are still working,” said Gossen. “That’s thedifference I’m seeing.”Meanwhile, Dr. Roger Wong, clinical
professor of geriatric medicine at theUniversity of B.C., said continued learning is agreat way for seniors to improve brain health, particularly if it’s a new exercise routine.“I support the use of exercise programs
for individual health as a way to maintainbalance and for brain health,” said Wong. “It’sa way to increase the health of blood vesselsto reduce the risk of stroke.”Wong added continued learning is an
activity that can improve a senior’s quality oflife.
“As for the health benefits, as far asmedical research goes there is no concreteevidence, but there is evidence the absence ofcontinued learning can affect your quality oflife,” said Wong, who served as president ofthe Canadian Geriatrics Society from 2011 to2013.Wong added it’s not just the act of learning
that’s beneficial, but also the socializationthat goes along with it.“It gives seniors a sense of community
and motivation to get out of the house,” saidWong. “It helps them stay connected.”The Vancouver School Board’s Continuing
Education program was recently integratedwith Langara College. Visit langara.bc.ca/continuing-studies. Meanwhile Simon FraserUniversity offers courses for adults aged 55and older through its continuing educationprogram. Visit sfu.ca/continuing-studies. Be honest. Raise your hands if you startedplanning for retirement in your twenties.Thirties? Forties? You’re not alone if planning for retirement
and life as a senior was not a priority as youfinished school, travelled, raised a familyand worked hard to make ends meet. Butaccording to estate planning adviser CindyDavid, no matter what your age, it’s still nottoo late to plan for your financial future.“The time is right now for all ages,” advises
David, president of Cindy David Financial.“Don’t feel bad because you waited to startplanning, but the sooner you get started, thefewer surprises you’ll have along the way.”
David said the typical Canadian uses theirtwenties to accumulate and (hopefully) pay offdebt and their thirties to begin makingmoremoney and start a family. David addedmanyCanadians in their forties simply keep theirheads down and continue to work hard. That’sthe time, David said, many ask, “now that Ihave somemoney, where should I put it?”
As for retirement planning, David said it’stypical to see clients about five years prior to theiractual retirement. She noted with Vancouver’shigh cost of real estate, even homeowners withnomortgage can’t count on any equity shouldthey decide to sell and stay in the city.“Maybe their home is 40 years old and they
want to sell it andmove into a condo with newappliances and some space,” said David. “InVancouver, that’s more of a sideways moveand they’re not going to see any equity.”
David added a good place to begin findingsolid financial advice often starts at anindividual’s bank and evolves to an estateplanner.Seniors should also plan for their futurewhen
it comes to their health, and again, it’s rarelytoo late to start. According to the provincialgovernment’s website SeniorsBC.ca,manyseniors wish they’d started planning earlier.Thosewho start planning now can be assuredthey’ve done their best today for tomorrowand have the tools tomake themost of laterlife, maintain health and independence, havegreater control over decisions, have a positiveretirement and reduce or avoid costs for healthcare and other services. As well, advance care planning should be
considered, which includes thinking aboutand writing down wishes or instructions forfuture health care treatment in the event asenior becomes incapable of deciding forthemselves. Advance care planning givesseniors a voice and family or friends theknowledge and tools they may need to makedecisions on their behalf. In Vancouver, the 411 Seniors Centre offers
free counselling on everything from incometax to housing, health to legal advice. Visit411seniors.bc.ca and seniorsBC.ca for moreinformation.
“Advance care planning gives seniorsa voice...and the knowledge and
tools they may need.”

your ultimateto do listDavidicus Wong, M.D.
Life is ironic. We spend at least 12 years of our youth in
school, attending to lessons so that we canavoid mistakes on our tests. Then in the restof our lives, the tests come first, we makemistakes and learn from them.As children, our parents seem to change
more than we do. When we are youngchildren, our parents are cool and knoweverything. When we become teenagers, theyare totally uncool and know nothing. Whenwe become adults, they may not be cool butthey’ve become wise. When we are young, we have the energy
and time to travel around the world andaccomplish the things we’ve always wantedto do but not enough money. When we areparents, we have a little less energy and alittle more money, but not enough time. Andwhen we are old with enough money savedand plenty of time, we may no longer beable to travel (or afford the medical travelinsurance).
When we are young, we have a list ofambitions – the things we wish to achievein life. As we go about our lives, raise ourfamilies, juggle our relationships and attendto our work, we accumulate an ever growingto do list. With age comes discernment. We learn
what matters most and what deserves ourattention. Though the list we bring to ourdoctors grows longer, our most important todo list is shorter. What should be on your Ultimate To Do List
in the senior years?Express your positive feelings. The greatest
tragedy in life is that most of us die notknowing how we touched the lives of othersand howmuch we were loved. Don’t missan opportunity to express your love andgratitude to the most important people inyour life.Let go of everything that holds you back
from being at peace with yourself and yourlife. This may mean letting go of the past, forgiving others and forgiving yourself.Make clear decisions about what kind of
medical care you would want if you couldn’tmake decisions for yourself in the future. Thismay include the decision not to have CPR orlife support. Discuss this with your loved onesand your family doctor.Ensure that you have all the medical
information that doctors would need in caseyou required urgent or emergency care. Thiswould include your list of medications and aone-page summary of your medical history(allergies, family history, chronic conditions, operations and significant past illnesses). If there’s one thing you’ve always wanted to
do, why haven’t you done it yet?
Dr. Davidicus Wong is a family physician. Formore on achieving your positive potential atevery age: davidicuswong.wordpress.com.
