SeniorS’ Chat
Bill’s Column
Fall is in the air.
Today, as my thoughts are reflected upon the “fall is in the air,” I am curious about the
days ahead. Even though trees have not yet turned colors, just the hope of God-created
beauty of autumn has been lingering in my heart.
The following quote has significantly influenced
me since I first read it:
“The nights are getting longer, the days are getting shorter, and it’s
getting much cooler. The warm days of summer are over. Now we
can enjoy the beauty of fall as the leaves change their colors. During
the fall, the leaves on the trees turn from green to gold, yellow,
orange, brown or red. These are fall colors. Some trees, such as
spruce and pine trees, remain green throughout the year. To see so
many different colors on all of the trees at one time is what makes the
fall such a beautiful time of year. As it gets closer to winter, the leaves
fall off of the trees until finally the trees are bare. Are they dead? No,
they’re still very much alive. The trees are just going to sleep for the
winter. The leaves will return in the spring as the weather gets warmer
and the days get longer.”
Time to sit back, relax and enjoy the season of leaf color-changing
beauty!
Happy Autumn Season!

At 1:00 PM, our guest speaker, James R. Marsh, will talk about genealogical research. He has been doing
genealogical research on and off after being “bitten by a genealogical bug” around 1967, when he read a
Reader’s Digest article about genealogy being the-then-fastest growing hobby. He read the saved old letters
given to his wife Elizabeth, written long ago between her father (Robert) and his sisters, showing genealogical
data on their ancestry. This helped Elizabeth join the Daughters of the
American Revolution (DAR).
After successfully proving his various lineages, Jim joined:
Society of Mayflower Descendants
Sons of the American Revolution (SAR)
Order of the First Families of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
Descendants of the Founders of Ancient Windsor
The Society of Descendants of the Founders of Hartford
The Wolcott Family Society
The Park Society

My Trip to Sturgis by Ross Gilson
On Tuesday, July 28th, four hombres, Al Manfredonio,
Nelson Freeze, Tim Lavelle, and I rode off on our
motorcycles for our ‘once in a life time’ road trip to
Sturgis, South Dakota. We made two overnight stops and
arrived Sturgis late on the third day. The days were long,
hot and tiring as we were exposed to the hot weather.
We stayed at a rented travel trailer right off the highway
not far from Sturgis for nine days. We made several side
trips such as the Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, Custer State
Park, Crazy Horse Monument, Black Hills National
Forest, Devils Tower in Wyoming, and the towns of
Sturgis, Deadwood, Spearfish, and Wall (famous for Wall
Drug Store). We met several deaf riders from all over
who came for the Quinquennial (every five years) DBA
(Deaf Bikers of America) Rally. We attended their DBA
Picnic for BBQ and social gathering.

My Trip to Sturgis (continued from page 7)
On my trip back home, I rode with a guy, Robert Distler,
from Long Island, NY. The three guys I rode with continued
on their trip to California. Robert and I made three
overnight stops. We visited the National Motorcycle
Museum in Anamosa, Iowa and the Motorcycle Hall of
Fame Museum at American Motorcycle Association (AMA)
headquarter in Pickerington, Ohio. After our last night in
Wheeling, WV, we split ways and I arrived home safely that
afternoon on Wednesday, August 12th. I am humble to say
that I rode 4,500 miles roundtrip.
The highlights of my trip were Mt. Rushmore, the hairpin
turns and tunnels on Needles Point Highway, and the
National Motorcycle Museum.
We were told that over 2 million people came for the week
at Sturgis.
