The organs which give us knowledge about us and our surroundings are called the sense organs.

The sense organs convey everything to the brain. Then they act according to the instructions given by the brain. Therefore they are like windows of our body.

The Eyes

Our eyes are very important and sensitive organs.

They are useful to us to see all the plants, animals and the things around us. The eyelids protect the eyes.

Precautions to be taken to protect our eyes We must wash our eyes with

cool water to prevent dust setting around them.

Page 6: Sense organs

We must not watch Tele Vision for long. The distance between Tele Vision and our eye must be not than 2.5 metres.

We must protect our eyes

against injuries, so do not play with things that have sharp or pointed edges.

We must take plenty of vegetables like carrots , drumsticks, tomatoes, pumpkin, and fruits like papaya, mango, eggs. Butter, milk, fish, and meat in our food.

Ears

We can listen to sounds through our ears. We have two ears, one on each side of

our head. The outer ear is visible to us. From this

outer ear a narrow canal like part goes inside our head.

At the end of this canal there is a thin membrane called the eardrum.

Precautions to be taken to protect our ears

Our ears are very delicate organs. We must keep them clean

If you are to hear loud noises put your finger or cotton wool in your ears

Do not hit or slap anyone on his or her ear or cheek

Nose

We recognise the smell through nose. We breathe in and breathe out air

through our nose. There are two nostrils and nasal cavities

in our nose

Precautions to be taken to protect our nose

We must keep our nose clean.

Avoid soaking in water for a longer time as far as possible.

Do not put small pebbles, seeds, pencil or matchsticks into your nose.

Do not blow your nose wherever you like. Use a clean handkerchief when you blow your nose or sneeze.

The Tongue Our tongue helps us to swallow our

food. It pushes the food between the when we

chew the food It also helps us to speak It tells us about the taste of food we eat. There are taste buds on our tongue They tell us about different tastes like

sour, bitter, sweet, salt etc.

Precautions to be taken to protect our tongue We should not eat food that is too hot or

too cold.

We should brush our teeth and remove the coating on the tongue regularly.

The Skin

The skin spreads all along our body. It covers and protects all the parts of our

body Our body gets a distinct shape because of

the skin We feel the heat or coldness of things,

their roughness or smoothness through the sense of touch.

Therefore the skin is called a sense organ

Precautions to be taken to protect our skin

The sweat produced by the skin is sent out through sweat pores on the surface of the skin . So the skin becomes oily and sticky.

Therefore we should keep our skin clean
